Chapter 13

Chapter 13 Mika’s POV There’s that smell again. It smells like lavender, sweat and blood. Not sure if I can stomach it anymore. I used to like the smell of lavender, but now I can’t stand it.  Note to self: tell Kyle to rid his yard of any and all lavender, and the surrounding area. I will also have to ask Jayden the same thing, but they still use lavender. They’ll just have to build a green room or something.  “Talking to yourself again Princess.” I cringed when the man standing outside my cell said that.  My red eyed prison guard who never leaves.  I watched him kill someone right in front of my eyes. I could do nothing to stop him from draining the young man’s blood. I watched as the life was extinguished from his eyes and his screams for help went unanswered.  Some of his blood splattered on me and I had visions of him. Of his life and his daughter who is now an orphan.  I don’t know how long I have been here now, but I do know this. My wedding gown is ruined.  My mother is the queen of psychos. I have seen too many killed by my red eyed prison guard (who I have started calling Jerry much to his annoyance). And I am officially, royally, God help any man or vampire who gets in my way and I do mean anyone . . . pissed.  “I was just coming up with ways to kill you.” I said sweetly.  They have not fed me for a few days now. When they do decide to feed me it is food that I wouldn’t even give to a stray dog to eat.  “Keep talking like that and I might have to punish you.” He hissed.  I smiled at him and flipped him the bird before I turned my back to him. I just told him that I don’t see him as a threat and his growl gives me the indication that I was looking for. I not only insulted him, but I also humiliated him in front of the other prisoners kept in this hellhole.  My bald, red eyed vampire with a taste for young blood is going to die soon. I am just setting the stage before his final bow. Heads will roll.  “You little b . . .” He hissed again. “Na uh, you should be nicer to me. How you act towards me determines how slowly I am going to kill you.” I told him as I sat down in the corner of my cage.  I might not know how long I have been here, because all I have seen since I have been here is darkness, There are three other prisoners here. One of them is a little girl. She comes from a pack of cheetahs.  I don’t know what their plan is with concerns to her, but I do know that I need to get her out of here as soon as possible.  “Mika, you should really refrain from teasing my men like that. It is difficult to find anyone to stand watch over you and the other prisoners. Most of my men and women want you dead.” Cassie said. How does anyone expect me to be the savior? The vampires view me as a threat and maybe, just maybe, I am a threat to them. But there is no way I will be able to get rid of them.  “If that is so, why haven’t you killed me yet?” I asked, my hand moved to the gem between my breasts.  It is kind of ironic, the thing that gives me comfort comes from the woman who is the queen of vampires and is out to destroy me.  “I plan to.” Her reply came quickly and felt like a long thick needle was pierced into my heart. “I first want to discover what makes you so special. I want to know why my little prophets say I should kill you now before you wipe out the entire vampire race.” So, I take it you don’t want to spend time with your daughter and get to know her.  Right then, there will be no mother daughter bonding time.  “What happens when that happens and it’s too late?”  “What do you mean?” Her voice was low and I think I might have heard a heartbeat. But in order for her heart to beat that would mean she has a heart.  “You know exactly what I mean. What if when we finally discover what makes me so special is the same time I end up wiping the vampire race off the face of the earth?” I replied coolly. She doesn’t need to know that she has gotten under my skin.  “Then I guess we shouldn’t wait too long for your execution. I think tomorrow at midnight will be perfect. You shall be executed in front of my brethren. Once you’re dead there won’t be any more panic of whatever doom and gloom you represent for my vampires.” Cassie said. Her eyes seemed to flicker to my hand that I have wrapped around the precious stone attached to the necklace she gave me.  “Why do you still wear that?” Her question rattled me a bit. It shouldn’t have, but it did.  I decided to tell her the truth. “I wear it because my mother gave it to me, Cassandra.” I wanted so badly to call her Callie, but the name Cassandra slipped from my lips instead.  The time will come when I will tell her who she really is, but for now I need to keep my strength and let her play into my hand. The only problem is the cards I am holding is useless and my bluff is about to come to an end soon.  Kyle I need you.  Cassandra’s POV She is testing me. Why did she tell me her mother gave her that necklace. I gave it to her!  That ungrateful brat.  I am going to have her executed tomorrow at midnight. When did I ever feel a sense of remorse over having someone killed? Thoughts of killing her shouldn’t plague my thoughts like this. It is irrational. At least it is for me.  I have had a soul and my heart has pretty much been stone since I could remember. She confuses me as much as Killian does. Her stubbornness intrigues me. She should be begging for mercy, not challenging me.  Mika is going to pay for her stubbornness. The longer she lives the more my vampires fear her  and question my reign. For them it is not good enough to have her captured and imprisoned.  They want her dead. “Are you really going to go through with this tomorrow?” Laude asked me. He is the only one I trust, I know him well. For him to ask me this is telling me that he does not think it is for the best.  “Yes.”  “I know I was in front of the line when I told you that we should kill her, but what if her death is what sparks the start of the end of the vampire race. She is not powerful. She is a good fighter and her wolf is just a few months old.” Laude said rationally. He is my voice of reason when I go into blood lust. I trust his judgement.  “I already announced her execution. If we don’t go through with it there will be an up-rising against me.” I told him and felt his hand on my shoulder.  He is just as cold as I am. I don’t know what warmth feels like. I have only ever been surrounded by the dark and coldness.  “I understand my Cassie.” I smiled as he called me by my nickname. He is the only one of my men that I will allow to call me that. “I listened in on your conversation with Mika.” Where is he going with this? “I know that necklace around her neck is yours.” Laude said and I felt his words send icicles into my heart. I fell to my knees. Laude knelt down beside me.  “It can’t be. You know as well as I do that vampires can’t procreate.” I hissed at him.  “That doesn’t mean we can’t have children. We were all human at one point.” He pointed out.  Laude knows my history. We know the entire history of vampires. They were wiped out centuries ago. That is until I came to be about two decades ago. In two decades I have made sure the vampire race has multiplied all over the world. There are nearly three hundred thousand of us scattered around the world now. They are careful and watched over by vampire heads of the countries.  I have brought back the vampire race.  “There is so much that you don’t know about your past, that girl might have some of the answers you’re looking for.” Laude explained.  “Enough!” I screamed at him. “You are never to speak of this again. Tomorrow Mika dies. You are not to question my decision and you are no longer to ask questions you have no right asking!”  “Cassie. . .” “You are to address me as my Queen from now on. I am your queen.”  He glared at me for a moment before he bowed his head to me. “Yes, my Queen.”  Once he left I fell to my knees once again and cried. What if Mika really is my daughter? Laude’s POV My queen is making a mistake. Cassie has always trusted her instincts and they have never led her astray, until now that is. I went to our prison, which is more of a dungeon. We don’t really keep prisoners. Sometimes we just store our food here and betrayers.  Mika was curled up in the corner of her cage. She is weak, but her eyes are open and she seems to be watching the little girl we caught a while back.  She has taken to the girl. Getting her out of here might prove harder than I first thought.  Cassie doesn’t know what she is doing. I can’t let her kill that girl in the dungeon, something about her reminds me of Cassie. I feel like it would lead to  irrevocable devastation if Mika is killed. Then again all the things I have heard and seen might be some ploy by the girl, but there is no denying that the two women look very similar. They could be sisters, but that does not seem right.  The best time to get her out of here is at dawn, she will have at best ten hours to get as far from here as possible before we start hunting her again.  I walked towards the guard who was sneering at Mika. “I will watch her now. You can go and rest the sun will be up soon and I know for a fact that you haven’t eaten yet.” The guard grinned at me and left, but not before flashing his fangs at Mika. “I think I would like to feast on that cub that our friend seems to have taken to. She will make a good meal.” Damn it! This i***t better get a move on before I decide to kill him myself.  “You touch her and I will make you pay.” Mika hissed.  He is taunting her and her tough façade is fading away.  “Enough!” I commanded, “just leave and don’t taunt her. At midnight she dies. Then you can drain the little cheetah.” I have never killed a child before and I never will. I might be a bloodsucking monster but I do still have morals and strict rules that I follow.  “Whatever.” The guard said as he left. Mika let out a string of curses, but then wrapped her arms around her stomach. She hasn’t been fed for a while. I also know that she has been beaten ever since the vamps thought she was weak enough. The first night she was her she managed to kill one vampire and injured three more. She suffered a couple of nasty wounds herself but her wolf still managed to heal her. But now both she and her wolf are weakened and she has not been able to heal anything for a while now.  I now have five minutes to get her out of here.  I quickly opened her cage and helped her to her feet.  “What are you doing?” she whispered.  “Getting you out of here.” She didn’t move. “I am not leaving without Amy.” Who the hell is Amy? Oh, wait, I think I know. “Fine.” I handed her the key. “Get her out. I am going to check if it is safe for us to move out.” “You first helped capture me, now you are helping me to escape. Why?” Mika’s question was expected.  “Let’s just say I have my reasons.” I told her, focusing on getting out of here.  “Okay.” I expected more questions but Mika seems to get that I don’t have time to play twenty questions. We got out of the compound in four minutes. I had to lift both Mika and Amy, the cheetah, and run with them. It wasn’t easy but it was done.  The sun is going to be up any second now.  “Here, take this. Getting home is not going to be easy. The nearest werewolf pack is four days out from here. They might not be your pack, but they are allies with your pack.” I told her, giving her instructions on how to get there. It would take four days to get there with a car. She is on foot. “Here is some money, spend it carefully. I can’t be much help to you now. Don’t rest for more than two hours at a time. Keep moving and keep this close to you at all times.” I handed her a gun loaded with wooden bullets and a dagger I have always kept on me.  Mika threw her arms around my neck, the gesture took me by surprise.  “Thank you.” She said.  I only wish I had more time to prepare. If only I was able to provide her with a car. I might be able to help her heal a bit if I give her some of my vampire blood. It is a known fact amongst the higher ups in the vampire community that vampire blood can help heal non-vamps. At least that is true for humans. We have never really experimented on werewolves before.  I bit my wrist and held it out to her. “Drink.” She eyed me for a second. We are running out of time. I could already feel the burn of the sun.  Once the rays of the sun reach me I will die.  Mika wrapped her hand around my arm moved her mouth to my wrist. She drank a bit and then pulled away. “Now leave, before it is too late.” She nodded and held the little girl’s hand in hers and they were walking away fast and heading to the highway. As long as they stick to the daylight they should be fine.  Once it is discovered that Mika has escaped, I am sure Cassie will know it is me.  Today is my last day.
