When I arrive at the infirmary, I’m told by a healer right away that Trudy is awake.
“Really?” I ask breathlessly as I make my way past the kind-looking woman. She nods at me, smiling, and I rush into Trudy’s room.
She’s sitting up, and she turns her head to meet my gaze. There’s a ghost of a smile on her lips, but she looks like she’s in pain. It comes as no surprise to me, because burn wounds are the most difficult to treat for us, and it takes us a long time to heal well.
“Trudy,” I say her name as I near her side of the bed. “I’m so glad you’re awake.”
“My child,” she replies. Trudy sounds so weak, and she grimaces when she tries to sit up straighter. I do my best to help her and adjust the pillow behind her to her satisfaction. “What happened? Where is everyone?”
