Chapter 2

People flow like a tide at night in the bustling metropolis, teaming with vehicles weaving through the street. Neon lights bloom, casting brilliant reflections across the night. The cacophony of the city fades into the background as tonight's moonlight bathes the world in a cleansing glow, washing away the chaos of the day. In the haze of the night, a bat flapped its dexterous wings across the night sky and flew into the side window of an apartment. Mammon glanced at the bat and said lazily, "Riley, you're getting fast." With a silent descent, the bat transformed into a flamboyant teenage boy. He casually straightened his long black hair, revealing dark green eyes. Riley took out a potion from his pocket and handed it to Mammon. "This medicine is for healing the soul. Please hand it over to Selena." With that, he was ready to turn and leave. "Wait, Riley, where is Selwyn?" Mammon asked. The teenager glanced slightly sideways and thought momentarily, then said, "The boss said he had to return to Sera first and would come back in a few days. I also told you to go back to the pandemonium first." Mammon nodded, and Riley became a bat again, diving into the night. Mia found a bottle of green potion and a note on the living room table the next day. After reading the note's contents, she hesitantly drank the potion before making her breakfast. Today, as usual, the sky was high and pleasantly warm. Mia sat beside the window, listening to her lectures, taking notes, and looking out the window when bored. This is routine daily life for Mia, our adolescent student, except that a bat is hanging from the window frame, which is not supposed to be there during the day. During the lunch break at St. Lawrence High School, Mia lazed in the sun on her cocoa table, looking around at her classmates talking and laughing in groups of three or five around her. Mia sighed slightly and felt a little lost. She had no close friends, having found it difficult to fit in with groups long ago and lacking proficiency in socializing with others. Mia is a lively girl who longs for sunshine. Still, due to the shadow of her orphanage days after losing her mother in childhood, she has become a bit autistic. She no longer opens up to others and subconsciously avoids contact. I knew she was doing this to protect herself. Over time, everyone assumed that she was a withdrawn person who was not easy to get along with and gradually began to distance themselves from her. Despite my repeated attempts to advise Mia to make more friends, she remained adamant that having me was sufficient. I am both pleased and helpless regarding Mia's dependence on me. The only thing that pleased me was that she had another friend, a little vampire hunter named Sandra Eden. Mia was bored, scribbling randomly on her desk with a pencil. As she traced the final strokes with her pen and erased the excess lines, Mia saw that a cute little bunny was nearly complete. Suddenly, a violent thud was heard, and the white sliding door of the class was roughly opened. Mia's hand shook, dropping her eraser to the floor. The bat glanced at the visitor, surprisingly flapped its tiny wings, and flew away. Mia bent down to pick up the eraser when she heard a familiar footstep approaching her. Mia stated that she knew who was coming with her eyes closed. "Mia Carlan!" a clear voice sounded overhead. As Mia picked up the eraser, her gaze was drawn to a black high heel, causing a slight, uncontrollable twitch in the corner of her eye. Tossing the eraser onto the desk and leaning back in her chair to meet the visitor's eyes, she asked, "What happened, Sandra?" Sandra scanned the classroom, noticing the curious glances from mortals, and lowered her voice. "The first hierarchy demon descended on this city last night in the same direction as your apartment. Also, you appear to have been targeted by a vampire." Sandra said it coldly as she looked at where the bats had disappeared. Mia said honestly, "Yes, I summoned that demon. Thanks to your 'Key of Solomon,' it greatly helped me." The Key of Solomon is a medieval grimoire attributed to King Solomon, containing instructions for summoning spirits, performing magical rituals, and casting spells. "How did you mess with a vampire when you summoned a demon? Did you sign a contract with a demon?" Sandra said it aggressively. Mia shook her head hurriedly and said, "No, no. But... I'm still involved in something." "What is it?" Sandra asked with a frown. Mia froze at the question. She couldn't exactly tell the truth, but she didn't want to lie to the only person who cared about her other than the other soul in her body. So she tells half the truth: "It's like this. That vampire is an old friend of the demon I summoned. He was looking for someone and wanted to bring her back to life. I know that person, and the vampire asked for my help. I obliged him so that the demon I summoned may return to hell without complaint." Sandra listened patiently and said, "Mia, you must be careful. The vampires are dangerous. They can be much more of a threat to humans than demons." "Oh? What makes you say that?" Mia asked doubtfully, clearly unconvinced. Sandra said very seriously, "Demons may be the most powerful and terrifying creatures of darkness, but they see humans as nothing more than an inferior creation of God. They couldn't care less about humans and may grant a summoner's wish on a whim. " "Yes, that's true." Mia agreed. "Vampires, however, are a different story. They view humans as mere food! Imagine a delicious cake in front of you, attempting to lecture you and pretend superiority. What would you do?" Mia imagined it and said, "I would be amused by the absurdity of it." Sandra then asked, "But what would you do if, say, it was a hateful piece of cake and it abused you and even provoked you?" Mia hesitated a little. "Probably, I'd eat it in one bite." "Right, I have the same idea. That's the way vampires see humans. Now, do you see why I said vampires are more dangerous?" "...." What a weird and interesting analogy. In the distance, the bat that had been spying on Mia just moments before flapped its tiny wings a few times and landed on the shoulder of a dark-haired teenager. Riley blinks his dark green eyes and quietly looks up to the sky, muttering, "Boss, it looks like we're almost there." The bat on his shoulder rubbed its small head against Riley's and whispered in the language of bats, inaudible to human ears. Riley wrinkled his nose and said, "The Eden family... what a nuisance." He gently nudged the bat's head with his finger and instructed, "Keep an eye on that human, but be wary of Eden." The bat nodded and once again spread its wings to cross the sky. As soon as class ended, Mia swiftly grabbed her schoolbag and hurried out. As the day ends, the sun casts a warm glow over the city, painting the sky in shades of gold and crimson. The peaceful atmosphere embraces the beautiful city as dusk settles in. Mia found a place with a few people, leaned against the wall, and closed her eyes. A soft call echoed through the dark spaces of Mia's mind: "Selena, Selena..." But there was no response from the soul sleeping there. "Still not awake? It's been a whole day of sleep. Selena has never slept this long." Mia muttered to herself. She looked at the gradually growing crowd and rummaged through her bag, taking a black leather book out of it. It was a handwritten copy of an ancient book. She held the book under her arm and continued walking toward home. With the key inserted into the lock hole and spinning with a crisp sound, Mia gently pushed open the door of her flat and threw her schoolbag on the floor. Looking at the living room, which was dark due to the absence of lights, for a moment, she softly said, "I'm back." After saying that, she smiled to herself. What was the point of speaking those words to this empty, cold apartment? Despite her smile, Mia's heart was tinged with bitterness. After her mother passed away, there would be no one to say 'welcome back' or anything like that to her. "Welcome back." A gentle voice drifted leisurely through the room. Mia was startled and quickly reached out to switch the lights on. The living room was instantly illuminated, only to see a handsome silver-haired young man sitting on the long beige sofa. First glancing up at the switched-on light, he turned to Mia with a light smile and said, "Miss Carlan, I apologize for my unannounced visit." Mia's eyes widened in surprise, and she nodded stiffly. Standing up with suave elegance, the gentleman delicately raised the young lady's hand to his lips in a chivalrous greeting. "Hello, young lady. I'm Selwyn Louis, Selena's cousin."
