Chapter 4

Alistair stood on the roof of the tallest building at St. Lawrence High School, quietly looking into the distance. The north wind was crisp and cold, blowing his short black hair. Selwyn stopped his eavesdropping and snorted. "Sure enough, as you and I expected, the Ramirez family's ancient book was given to the Eden family by Bethnael. And, since Eden took the ancient book seriously by listening to Bethnael's rumors, Mia Carlan couldn't borrow it." Alistair glanced at him, waiting for his following words. Selwyn looks at Alistair, and his eyes squint slightly. "But there is good news as well. Sandra's grandfather knows where the ancient book is. Also, the book was sealed by some kind of magic." "Sealed?" Alistair asked. "Yes." Selwyn nodded, deepening her smile. Hearing the answer, the usually expressionless Alistair surprisingly raised the corners of his mouth slightly. "That's much more convenient." At midnight, the heavy brown door of Eden Castle was steadily pushed open. Accompanied by a dull and low sound, an ancient and gloomy atmosphere came out, bringing an indescribable sense of shock. A pair of black high heels stepped onto the crimson carpet at the castle entrance, and the old butler immediately greeted her, saying respectfully, "Lady Sandra, welcome back. Did the mission go well?" "Well, those vampires we encountered were fledglings, and their sire was only an eleventh-generation vampire. They were all killed by us quickly. It was fairly easy." The one who spoke was Eden's heiress, Mia's friend Sandra. She wore a short black leather jacket, and her body was mature and hot, displaying a slightly bawdy, wild beauty. Several young men followed Sandra all the way in, laughing and joking. One of them, a skinny young man with some stupid arrogance due to his unexpected success, shamelessly laughed and yelled, "Hahahahaha, butler, just don't worry about it. Vampires are an inferior race that is not worth mentioning. With a few of us around, we will beat the crap out of those vampires." After a burst of laughter, a skinny young man with a nose stud glanced at him and sneered, "Just by you? I don't know who was so scared at first that he hid behind Lady Sandra. Anyway, he looks very vulnerable." "What did you say?" The robust young man glared at the nose-stud young man and was about to fire back a few words. But the old butler stopped him. "Alright, alright, stop it. I understand the joy of your first victory, and it's normal to laugh and talk for a few moments. But we need to close the door first." The old butler shook his head. What a group of energetic youngsters! The ancient giant door of Eden Castle gradually closed. The young vampire hunters, who relaxed their vigilance, did not notice that a black shadow darted into the door the moment it was closed. Ever since the black shadow managed to sneak into Eden Castle, he concealed himself in the darkness and began to follow Sandra, silently monitoring her every move. The dark shadow was Alistair, who had discussed the ploy with Selwyn early on and had come prepared with an uneasy mission. He realized that instead of returning to her room, Sandra had gone to see her grandfather. Alistair watched Sandra push open the carved wooden door and enter a brightly lit room. Knowing it was probably her grandfather's study room. Alistair gave up on continuing to follow her and quietly listened to their conversation outside the study room. At first, they just chatted about completing today's mission, which was nothing special... Sandra's grandfather is a spirited older man, nearing eighty years old who dotes on his only granddaughter immensely. He spends much time fussing over Sandra, showing genuine concern and care. As a respectful child, Sandra patiently responds to her doting grandfather with no hint of annoyance, displaying great patience and affection towards him. Alistair was also very calm, listening silently, but he still sincerely hoped this topic would end faster. Suddenly, his eyes lit up slightly as he finally captured something useful. Sandra's voice sounded solemn: "Grandpa, I want to ask you for information about a book. That ancient book called Crystal." The older man sighed slightly. His tone was different from the loving and amiable one before but rather one full of life's vicissitudes. "My little Sandy has grown up and has reached the age where she has a strong desire for knowledge. Unlike your mother, you are strong and daring, which is also one of the reasons why I want you to take over the family. As the rightful heir, it's time for you to know the family secret." "Grandpa…" Grandfather's encouragement and words of support couldn't help but touch Sandra. The old grandfather laughed and said, "Well, girl, I won't hide anything from you. Since ancient times, our family has had a secret restricted place used to keep some rare ancestral treasures and taboo things, and 'Crystal' is one of them. To open the restricted place, we need the three Snake King's Eyes that have been passed down from generation to generation in our family, and now they are all stored in my place. This restricted place is under the castle. When you grow up a little more, I will hand you those three Snake King's Eyes. When that time comes, you can go and take a look." Sandra listens carefully, alarmed inside. But her face stays calm, and she merely nods in response. Only one door away, Alistair also listened very carefully. He slightly raised the corner of his mouth, silently diving into the castle's depths. That night, blue smoke seeped silently through the cracks in the ancient stone tiles of the castle floor and soon swept through the restricted underground. At the same time, let's see what Miss Mia Carlan is doing. Is she falling asleep at this late hour? Obviously not! Mia is diligently studying to avoid failing tomorrow's exam, putting in extra effort to review. Her temporary tutor is my dear cousin Selwyn. Selwyn watches Mia solve problems while guiding her in the workbook, striving to help Mia understand these math problems, which are pretty simple for most students. "Well, this is how the question is solved. Do you understand?" Selwyn asked after turning the question upside down and repeating it four times to finish explaining a single question type. Mia stared straight at the question for a while and finally looked at Selwyn with even more confused eyes, still having no idea. Selwyn sighed, rubbed his forehead, and suddenly abandoned his usual gentle demeanor. He sternly said to Mia, "You're not resting today. You must study hard!" Looking at Selwyn's sudden change with a face full of resentment, Mia exclaimed, "Heartless, you're just a devil!" Raising an eyebrow, Selwyn replied calmly, "Sorry, I'm a vampire. Instead of questioning my race, how about you tackle ten more math problems?" With that, he slammed another workbook onto Mia's desk. "Now, start writing!" Internally, Mia shed tears, finding Selwyn terrifyingly more daunting than a devil. No wonder Sandra said vampires are more dangerous than demons! After that exhausting night, Mia barely made it to the exam room, and as soon as the test was over, she collapsed on her desk, completely exhausted. In the afternoon, when the results came out, Mia excitedly looked at her paper, her hands trembling as she tightly gripped the exam. 85 points! (Even though the total score was 120.) However, Selwyn expressed that just the thought of tutoring Mia gave him a headache. That human was too challenging to teach! And at this moment, after three days of deep slumber, I finally began to stir awake. In a daze, I sensed that Mia's mood was good, and even the once dark and cold recesses of her heart felt warm. Nestled in the little abode I had created with my mind, the scenery outside the window was unlike before. Instead of the pitch-black void, an expansive meadow stretched in gentle sunlight, with lush green grass swaying in the soft breeze. I blinked my sleepy eyes open, lazily rising from the bed. Pushing the window open, I faced the vibrant landscape outside, the fresh air mingling with warm sunlight streaming in, causing my silver locks to dance in the wind. Taking a deep breath, I felt at peace. This was the world within Mia's heart, the sanctuary of her soul. Usually shrouded in darkness, it changed with her emotions. Sometimes, displaying this beautiful scenery, and at other times, it's the opposite. Was I becoming dissatisfied with the illusionary landscapes of the spiritual realm and longing for the outside world? Idle and curious about Mia's newfound happiness, I pondered momentarily, raising an eyebrow. Did she pass her math exam? Closing the window, I glanced through the mirror on the room's wall, observing Mia and the outside world. This mirror was established two years ago when Mia learned magic, and it is extremely useful. Suddenly, the air around me turned freezing, and the wind outside howled fiercely against the window. I look around in shock to find a frozen, desolate landscape of a bitter winter night in place of the once beautiful surroundings outside. Cold darkness engulfed Mia's inner realm, the frigid winds pressing against the sanctuary I had created with my power. Frowning slightly, I whispered, "Mia..."
