Chapter 1- Broken and Awoken
Please, just let me go…” Laura said looking straight in to his face. His blue eyes were frantic and desperate, begging her to reconsider, but she was determined that this had to happen.
“Clive, don’t make this harder than it already is, please…” she almost didn’t feel any remorse for this, she felt numb. How exactly are you supposed to feel when you walk into your boyfriend’s living room and find him pants down with your best friend? The worst part being the nerve he had to be upset.
“Laura, please, talk to me… I can explain” he said, in his hopeless attempt to do what exactly? Lie to her, again. Like that image of her best friend Lillian going down on him was going to magically be erased from her mind. Heaven knows where that tramp disappeared to, it was not like Laura cared regardless, that was the least of her worries right now. She was eager to get of this wretched place and forget that this day ever happened.
“Just get away from me…” she said pushing him out of the way.
“Forget I ever existed..” she could only pray that he didn’t hear the slight break in her voice as she walked away from him don’t look back, don’t look back, she kept chanting to herself in her bid to get as far away from this situation as possible without breaking he calm.
The walk back the bedroomed apartment, bought with some of the inheritance money she got when her parents passed, was long, but she needed it. Breaking down was not an option, it was not like her. She was usually calm and put together, but this level of betrayal by two of the most important people in her life was crippling. She barely noticed how she got up the stairs and into her apartment, but as soon as she closed the door behind her and was in her safe space, she slid to the floor and let the tears flow.
Laura had no idea how long she was in the same position for but when she finally gave herself the strength to get up, her legs were numb and her body was aching. She willed herself to gather some strength and as she waddled to her bedroom, caught a glimpse of herself in the hallway mirror. Her usual long, curly brown hair looked tangled and disheveled. Her green eyes tainted with red, surrounded by dark circles and mascara smeared on her cheeks. She was truly a ghost of her normally put together self. The only other time she cried this hard was when her parents passed and she went through a dark time. She threw herself onto her bed and just let the sadness of loss take her... This day was proof, she really was alone in this world. The tears flowed freely until eventually she passed out.
“Lady Lenora…” a soft voice sang to her, “It is time for you to wake up My Lady, we have drawn your bath.” Laura slowly opened her eyes, something felt different about her, about her surroundings. The soft comfort of the bed she lay in and the luxurious feel of the sheets that engulfed her were nothing like the cheap furniture and linen she had purchased for herself from home depot. She gradually got up and looked around her. The room was spacious with high Grecian walls held up by pillars, one the one side an arch with silk curtains that looked like it led to a small balcony. It took a few moments for her to gather her thoughts and she hesitantly willed herself of the humongous four poster bed, discreetly scanning her surroundings. In the middle of the room was the bath that had been made ready for her, water brimming to the top, the scent of rose and lavender masking her sciences.
“Let us help you My Lady.”, said the soft voice, giving Laura a start and bringing her back to reality or whatever this was. Two young girls came from behind her and loosened small straps that seemed to hold the pieces of her sleeping garments in place and the pieces of material gathered elegantly at her feet. Instinctively she ran her hands to cover her exposed body parts and she noticed the two young ladies giggle.
“Celia, our Lady must be nervous today, let us help her.” said the one girl. They each took her hands and led her towards the waiting bath.
“We must make haste, my lady.” Celia said, “We are hosting the Royal family today and your mother has given us strict instructions to make your appearance as appealing as possible.”
“Why?” Laura asked, both confused and curious.
“Don’t be silly My Lady, do you really not remember?” Celia said in a giggle as if Laura had just made a crazy joke.
“Why don’t you remind her Meera?” she said while lathering Laura’s body with beautifully scented soaps and oils.
Meera looked up at Laura, excitement and pride evident in her face.
“Because the Prince is due to choose his Bride.”
