HELENA
Sometimes, I just wonder at the corner of the tight gray cell as to how such an unfathomable event could happen. How twisted fate could be? How playful it could get for playing with an innocent person like me? Unfortunately, it’s pointless to ask such questions because I had already spent enough three years in prison.
The color of life my eyes that once had can only see the monochrome of hopelessness as the bright sun kissed my skin when my feet finally stepped on the outside world of cell.
“Let’s get going, Helena…” I feel a warm hand on my arm. It’s from my best friend Paulo, the same person who was the sole one visiting me in the prison and the very one who was relaying all the gut-wrenching news that was happening between Tristan and Kristina.
I have nowhere to go now, so I just come along with him. Throughout the ride, I have nothing in my mind than the rotting rage building in me. Thinking that I had been set up in such a scheme, only to end up getting thrown away in the picture with Tristan doing the same s**t again. There was nothing left for me, literally–even my share on Tristan’s business. They’re all gone.
“How do you think they are living now, Pau?” I asked out of nowhere as I cast a glance beside the driver’s seat.
Silence took over in a moment as if he was carefully weighing the things he’s about to say. In the end, he said something that I have never heard from his mouth before. “They have a child–a three-year-old one.” He stated, eyes on the road. It was an absolute crash into my mind. Flabbergasted, my eyes dilated at him–only for just a moment when a chuckle took me over shortly.
“It’s like they were trying to throw you out by doing that bullshit just so they could get back together.” He added and I couldn’t agree more. That’s exactly what it seemed like.
“Three-year-old, huh? That says something already happened before I caught them… But I was an i***t for believing lies from his filthy mouth…” I whispered as the rage I thought had rotten eventually arose back. I didn’t even notice my palm forming a ball of knuckle. On the contrary, the tears welling up in my eyes screamed for another emotion.
“What’s your plan now?” Paulo asked, taking me back to the cell where I have already plotted the gist of things that I’m going to do once I’m released. As the tears of pain and rage rushed down my cheeks, I spoke through a pounding heart with conviction.
“It’s just simple–I have already lost the direction of this life, but coming after them determines the path I’ll end up on.” My eyes that once had the brightest colors, only possess the color of rage ever since I was caught up with the most outrageous betrayal.
“So, I’m just going to drag them to hell with me.” Heart racing at an immeasurable speed, my nails dug into my palm, leaving it bruised. But instead of feeling the pain it caused, another kind of pain was taken to my attention more.
“Damn…” a mere word was whispered through his teeth, so I turned my head to his direction at the unexpected response and looked at him with my brows slightly furrowed. “You don’t sound like the Helena I know.” He followed as he let out a chuckle next.
“After all those betrayals, Paulo, are you still expecting me to act like the down-to-earth b***h that I was? You’re kidding me.”
I am self-aware, so at some point, I did understand him. But that’s just all there is to it. The twisted fate of life led me here. And honestly, I don’t care about who I was in the past anymore. That b***h has already died.
From this moment on, I just need to do one thing in this lifetime. Only that way could my heart heal.
Due to some circumstances, I ended up deciding to go to the nearest place of where we are. Paulo received a call from his pregnant fiance, getting the news of her labor today. Though he was insisting that if I don’t come with him to the hospital, might as well bring me to his and his fiance’s house. However, I still declined both of his offers.
Even though Marga doesn’t have an issue with it, I still think that it doesn’t look decent for me to go to his house first. That’s why I just ended up telling him to drop me off at the pub that we are about to drive past.
“Aight. Will just give you a call.” He said and handed me enough pennies to buy myself some drinks.
“Don’t forget to list down what I have owed you.” I said to which we both chuckled before bidding our farewell.
I quickly settled myself at the bar counter while a group of carefree people were dancing along the beat of party music. There was already an unfinished wine glass at the only empty seat, so I moved it aside thinking that the person who drank it had already gone.
But s**t, I was mistaken.
“This seat is already taken, miss.” I was about to drink the beer that I received, when someone’s cold voice from behind halted me to mend the thirst in my throat. The natural reaction I did was lifting my head as I searched for the eyes of that person.
But I ended up curling my brows when a familiar person greeted me.
“We still have a spare bar stool, sir! Please, wait a second!” The bartender who overheard him intervened and brought another bar stool to which he positioned right beside me. “I greatly apologize for the inconvenience, ma’am and sir!”
As the tension died down, he and I happened to overhear the conversation of the bartender who just apologized with another one by the corner.
“Hey, you should be careful around that dude! You don’t know what he’ll do if you make the same mistake again. You’ve heard about what he did to his friend, right?!” a seemingly senior bartender scolded him.
“I know! I know!”
That’s right. I thought this man is really familiar. Who would have known that he is that famous Matthew who has been the talk of the town? Damn, it’s been years already and his reputation is still the same. I even recalled seeing him at the event that marked the turning point of my life.
“Maybe it’s the ill fame that never lasts.” I muttered mindlessly before chugging the beer that cleared the thirst in my throat. I didn’t know that I needed this. Thinking he didn’t hear me, I never thought that he would actually respond!
“Definitely, it’s not love that everyone thinks. Damn, even married people get divorced.” It seemed so much like I was shot by the head. The silence between us is so loud that I have nothing to say out of shock. “That dude is something else.” I turned my head to his direction with my eyes piercing at him, to which he returned shortly.
“Are you praising him?” My voice slightly raised in an incredible surprise because of the tone I heard from him.
“No. I’m just amused by how bastard of a person he is.” He answered to which I favored in an instant. “That day was full of drama, I ain’t even going to lie.” He added, squinting my eyes slightly. Perhaps, it was even fortunate to him that the gossip was diverted to us that time instead of him being focused on.
“A seemingly thankful and sweet husband. A theft drama–the touch of arrest. And the shameless two people making a seemingly sweet scene.” – he must be pertaining to Tristan hugging Katrina. He had been watching all of them all along. But I didn’t know he’s this talkative to talk about such a sensitive topic with someone he just met.
“So, what are you getting at?” I cut him short quickly before he goes through the depth of the events. Although I managed to avoid it from happening, I was struck with a shocking and an unprecedented response instead.
“What are your plans now, Helena Louise Pattinson? You’ve got nowhere to go now–I even doubt if you have the money to pay for that beer. The years of your life in the prison ruined you, am I not right–” This ill-mouthed jerk!
“What are you trying to say, Matthew Luke Trost?” my voice hardened as I looked at him with sharp eyes. Does he have to rub it on my face? Where did he get the guts, by the way?
“Believe it or not, but I just thought of something hopeful for the both of us the moment I saw you on my seat… I suppose fate brought us together, don’t you think? After all, what could two people with ill fame do together?” my eyes narrowed at the unclear things he’s spitting. Matthew then flashed a grin on his face. “Are you interested in making a deal with me, Ms. Pattinson?”
