Chapter 1: Running Away
Lizzy's s pov I checked around to see if anyone saw me leaving the house with my things and I was relieved to that they were all fast asleep. I have had enough of the harassment and constant abuse. This night was the worst of them all. I could still see the way he held my hands and tied them to the bed while he kept plunging into me countless times. When he was done, he threw me out of his room with disgust on his face and looked at me with a smirk. "Tomorrow will be more interesting!" He said and winked at me. I almost threw up out of disgust but I knew my punishment would be worse. I ran to my shabby room and started packing my clothes into my bag. I had no idea where I would run to but I knew that I was not going to accept being assaulted anymore. I picked up my bag and left the room. I know I would need money to survive and I know where my useless cousin usually keeps his money so I went there and stole some money. I got outside and immediately started running. It was already midnight but I did not care. After running for some time, I finally saw a taxi and flagged it down. "Where to miss?" He asked me. I was at a loss for what to say because I had run away with no destination in mind. "Nowhere for now but I need to get as far as I can," I said to the taxi man as I entered the taxi. The driver looked at me with understanding in his eyes. "Whatever it is you are running from dear, I pray you meet a better option." He said to me. I could not help but manage to smile a little, it was the least I could do. The driver drove for a long time before being stopped in front of a cheap-looking motel. "Hope you have money, you can rest here for the night." He said. "Thank you, sir," I said as I gave him money for the ride and came out of the taxi. He smiled at me and pushed the money gently towards me. "You need it more than I do." He smiled at me and drove off. I smiled in appreciation as I went to the motel to sleep. The next morning, I checked out and went to the road to see what I was going to do next. I stood confused about what to do when a car drove in and stopped in front of me. The car window slid down and the head of the taxi driver from last night popped out of the window. "Hello!" He said cheerfully. "Still confused?" He asked in a joking tone. I did not know when I smiled at him. I was relieved to see a bit familiar face. "Yes sir." I nodded my head. "Then hop in." He said to me. Without stopping to think if I was doing the right thing or not by going with a strange man after I just managed to escape from one man, I jumped into the taxi. The driver drove for a few minutes and then stopped in front of a cafe. "Come down, I need to show you something and introduce you to someone." He told me as he came out of the car. It was at that point that for the first time since I ran away I became afraid. I came out of the car and stood. "Follow me." The driver said but I remained where I was. The driver turned to me with surprise in his eyes. "What is wrong?" He asked me. "Who are you? Where is this place? Who are we going to meet and why in the world are you helping me?" I stammered in fear as I threw the questions at him. The man smiled calmly and held my hands. "You don't have to be afraid! I wanted to be done with everything before I introduced myself." He tried explaining. When I heard him say 'done with everything' my heart skipped a bit and I quickly withdrew my hands from him. "What are you going to be done with? What do you want to do with me?" I asked him. At this point, my fears were increasing but the driver only smiled at me calmly. "My name is Mr. Darwin and I am the owner of this cafe." He said pointing to the cafe he told me to follow him to. "Okay, so why do you keep helping me I thought you were a taxi driver," I replied to him. "No, I'm not, there was no taxi sign on my car yesterday, I was only coming back from where I went to visit a friend and saw you looking helpless and scared, and then I decided to help you." Mr. Darwin explained. My eyes widened in surprise. I realized that if he was a bad person, he would have taken advantage of me last night. "Was that why you refused the payment?" I asked him. "Yes." He smiled and nodded at me. "So why did you bring me here?" I inquired from him. "After leaving you yesterday, I felt sorry for you and then I told my wife about you and she said I should bring you to the cafe where she wants to meet with you." Mr. Darwin explained. I was scared but at this point, I had no choice. I was homeless in a new place and I was confused. I still had a high distrust for men due to the constant abuse I had suffered at the hands of my cousin but I chose to follow Mr. Darwin. "So what do you say? Shall we?" Mr. Darwin asked me. I thought about it for some time before nodding my head in the affirmative. "Yes sir!" I replied to him. "Just stop with the sir, Mr. Darwin is enough." He corrected me. "Yes, Mr. Darwin." I corrected myself. We both burst into laughter as we walked to the cafe. A woman saw us coming from the glass door of the cafe and ran outside to meet us. "Is she the one?" She asked Mr. Darwin. "Yes, she is." Mr. Darwin answered. "Oh dear, my husband has said so much about you, I'm glad to finally meet you." She said warmly. Suddenly she hugged me and for the first time since I lost my parents, I felt love like never before. The emotion was so strong that I started crying.
