Shayla hung back from the singing, studying the woman her son had brought home. Brooke’s firm rebuff stung, but in all fairness, Shayla had to admit she’d pushed her luck. Pushed and got pushed right back. In that, at least, I can’t complain. Yes, her family is her business, and yes, cutting off a parent is a huge deal few would make for no reason. Can’t fault her for making decisions about her own family, and she’s right. I don’t know her well enough to have an opinion on it. Brooke’s voice rose in joy, high and sweet with a hint of the depth the years would eventually bring her. She’s good at that. It’s surely one thing they have in common, but is it enough?
