Kenneth escorted Brooke out into the cold darkness of an October evening. “Are you ever going to let me pay?” he asked. “I haven’t decided yet,” Brooke quipped. “I guess it depends.” “On what?” “I’ll let you know.” They exited the restaurant and the slap of cold air momentarily cut off Brooke’s breath. “Oof.” “I agree,” Kenneth said. “It’s quite a night.
