Chapter 1
Emery’s POV “You want me to reject the Coven Offer?” I say, frowning at Sebastian. “Yes, there is no point in accepting it, since in a couple of days, you will be my Luna and Mate.” I stare at him, and think, being the leader of the Coven has been my lifetime dream, it belonged to my mother before she died, and now it is supposed to be mine, but Sebastian wants me to reject it, to be fully his. What do you do when your dreams clash? “You could still visit them, pay your respect and all that stuff.” He says dismissively, on one hand I should be angry and feel insulted at his dismissive tone, but he has always been like this, and I am in love with him, stupidly. “Anything for you.” I say, and he smiles at me, kisses my cheek, and enters his car. I thought we were supposed to go together, or he would at least stay with me while I break the news. But over the years, I have learnt not to question Sebastian. I walk back to the Coven, seeing all my sisters, happy and merry. The Coven Witches are hybrid; we are Witches and Werewolves, some people fear us, others look up to us. Among them, I am known as Ralie, a name my mother used to call me—one that ties me to her and our lineage. It is a name that my sisters hold dear, a name that now feels like a betrayal on my lips. “Ralie, I found the perfect dress for you! We’ve even figured out a way to style your hair; a way that screams ‘Queen’.” Raven, my cousin and closest friend, beams at me, and I freeze, looking at everyone. This breaks my heart, but it must be done. “Raven… I’m rejecting the Coven’s Offer,” I say, and there’s pin-drop silence. “What are you talking about? The Festival is in a few days, are you having cold feet? It’s perfectly normal,” Julia, one of the elders gently says, but I can’t even meet her eyes. I look away, shamefully. “I am turning down the offer, Raven should be the Queen of the Pack. I was never made for it anyway, you only wanted me because of my Mother, because you think I am her. I am nothing.” I say, repeating the words Sebastian has fed me. “Is this your Father’s words?!” Raven yells, and I shake my head. “There is no point beating around the bush. I am honored, but I am rejecting this offer. I hope to see you soon, and you can all forgive me.” I speak, looking away from their unwavering disappointment, and walk out. Unknown to me, I won’t see them for a long time. ****** I have been eager, literally at the edge of my seat, waiting for the day I’ll get mated to Sebastian, where I can be his, truly, in every way that matters. Today is that day. I am seated in the crowd, watching as the ceremony commences. I smile at Sebastian who is seated opposite me, but he doesn’t spare me a glance; he has to keep up with appearances, I understand. Moments later, he gets up, walks to the center, and I know this is my time to shine. I walk confidently, the crowd silent and parting for me, no one said it’ll be this fabulous. I stand before him, but there’s something in his eyes, something foreign in the way he is looking at me. “I, Sebastian, reject you, Emery.” He says, and there’s a ringing in my ear. I keep standing, looking at him, because he definitely did not just say that. This has been the plan for years, our plan, my plan, to be his Luna, his Mate. I was made for him, he won’t reject me in front of thousands; he won’t leave me naked. “Sebastian.” I say, keeping a straight face, but he doesn’t budge. “Want me to repeat it? I will. I, Sebastian Elord, reject you, Emery Spencer.” “Oh God.” I gasp, as the string of pain runs through me, his essence being torn from my existence, leaving me empty. “GO!” The Crowd yells and I stagger in shock at everything. The greatest shock is not the crowd, or Sebastian’s rejection, rather it is who comes out from the crowd, and walks into Sebastian ’s arm. Celeste. My step-sister. I watch Sebastian accept her as his Mate, his Luna. My entire world has been taken from under my foot, and they all watch. “The Coven will cease to exist,” Sebastian declares. “They’re currently being wiped out—every major Pack agreed, including your father’s Pack.” I freeze. “What did you just say?” I say, my voice high. “Your friends are dead, Sis. The Witches have been wiped out, erased from existence, their blood used to decorate, so much blood, didn’t know bitches bleed that much.” Celeste grins, and I snap. “Why not come here let me cut you, and we'll find out.” I growl, and her eyes widen with shock and embarrassment, but I do not care, as I take off for the Coven. “We killed those Hybrids, a stain on nature, freaks, you are next!” Sebastian yells as I run through the crowd, my heart in my throat. Oh God, my girls—Celeste, Julia, Kayla, Ri—Oh God, no. I run through the streets, through the wild, despite knowing I could get there faster by car, but I can’t think. I am filled with insurmountable dread. I rush into the house and scream when I see the bodies on the floor. All my girls killed, torn, taken from me, my Mother’s clan erased. “NOOOO!” I scream in agony, pain flowing through my body. I walk into every room, with tears blinding my vision, trying to see if anyone survived, but all I see is blood, and their bodies. I see the fact that they fought for their lives, I also see the inhumane ways they were killed. My girls did nothing, the Witches did nothing, and they were killed. If there’s one thing I know about Witches, it is that this is not the end. I will make everyone pay. But now, I must burn th eir bodies, lay them to rest. I will not rest, till my family is avenged.
