Chapter 2

SERA'S POV "Don't try to say things that aren’t there. It’s probably the one we used when you were around—" he stuttered, avoiding my eyes. "Really? That’s the excuse you're going with?" I shook my head bitterly. "So you expect me to believe that you kept an empty box of condoms from six months ago? As what? A souvenir?" Nate rolled his eyes, his hand moving to loosen his tie as he kicked off his shoes. I grabbed his arm, my eyes filled with dread as I stretched out the earring. "Explain this. You and I both know I never wear earrings with gold or diamonds because they never suit my skin tone." Nate’s face went hardened as he looked away. "Have you been f*****g my sister?" I asked sternly. My heart raced as I waited for his response. Nate stood there as if I wasn’t the one he was talking to. “Did a cat get your tongue, or do you just not know how to tell the truth?” I snapped harshly, letting the earring crash against his chest. "Stop being dramatic, Sera. I’m busy," Nate exhaled, running a palm over his face. His feet dragged against the floor as he walked over to the bed. "It seems you are so full of energy. Why don’t you make yourself useful and go make something for me to eat?" he said. I scoffed, shaking my head. This was the man I had stayed with for the past five years. I couldn’t believe it. Just two months apart, and he was already a different person entirely. “Nate, I need an explanation, and I’m not leaving until you do,” I demanded, my chest rising and falling as I stared at him. “Ugh, can’t you just shut up? I need to rest. Some of us have jobs, unlike you, who spent the last six months leeching off my money,” he sneered. His eyes were so cold, and I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the man I used to know. His words cut through my chest so hard that I let out a dry gasp. “Nate, I was in a coma. You think I had control over that?” I asked, my voice filled with so much pain as tears blurred my vision. “I’m done talking with you,” Nate hissed, and he started walking away. I hurriedly grabbed his arm, but he cast an eerie glance at me. With a huff, he jerked his hand away, and I staggered back. This time, the tears filled my eyes, and I had no strength to hold them back, so I let them fall freely. "Nate, please, we can talk about this..." I swallowed hard, hoping he would stay, but he didn’t. He just left without a second thought. "Argh..." My chest tightened as I gasped. My body crouched slightly as I held onto the fabric of my shirt. My fingers trembled as my eyes scanned the room in shock, as if they could somehow magically provide the answers I needed. "Why?" My lips began to quiver through heavy pants. "How did this happen?" My parents were nowhere to be found, and my fiancé was looking like a whole new person. Nate never came back inside the room, and the next morning, he left really early, probably off to work. He didn’t bother trying to fix things between us. That morning, I got dressed and headed to my parents’ house. Since they didn’t bother to check if I was still alive, it was better to break the news. When I got inside, the sitting room was empty, but I could hear faint chattering from inside the house. A few paces toward the dining table, my whole world shattered before my eyes. "Mom, now that Sera is awake, do I still have to marry her? You know it’s Selene I truly love." I heard his voice and stopped in my tracks. Isn't that Nate? What was he doing here? Confusion filled my head as I tilted my head toward the dining room. I peeked around the corner and saw Selene grinning from ear to ear, lying on Nate’s chest. My mom sighed as she turned to my dad. “Honey, you know he’s right. We can’t let them go through with it. It wouldn’t be fair to Selene, our biological daughter.” I watched my dad give a nod as he continued chewing on his food. “You’re right, honey, but you know this engagement was specially fixed by Nate’s grandmother. I don't think it would be wise to break it,” he exhaled. Selene’s face fell as she stared at Nate, hurriedly tugging against his chest. “Honey, how long does our daughter have to suffer because of that girl? You know the only reason we adopted her was because we needed her kidney to help with Selene’s condition,” my mother hissed, her brows knitting into a tight frown. "Now that she has fulfilled her duty, is there still any reason to keep her around? We can just send her away. Besides, if you weren’t so insistent on letting her grow up with our daughter, how else would she have been able to steal Nate from Selene?” My world shattered into pieces as pain surged through my body. So the only reason they chose to adopt me was because of Selene. My head spun so hard that I felt my knees go weak. My hands immediately went to the wall for support as my breath clogged inside my throat. “Honey, we can’t act rashly. Besides, what if Selene gets sick again and needs blood? You know it’s hard to find someone who can donate freely, but Sera does,” my dad said calmly. This was how they saw me. A tool to help replenish their sick daughter. I had always found it strange that Selene and I had the same blood type—O negative. But I was so happy that I could help my sister that I didn’t care about anything else. It turns out it was all fake. Everything. I wanted to move, but my whole body felt so numb that my legs refused to obey me. “How about this? Nate, you can get married to Sera, and then after a year, you can make her divorce you. That way, your grandmother won’t blame either of us, and then you can marry Selene.” Nate’s eyes lit up as he hugged Selene. “I can do that. For you, Selene, I can do anything,” he said. They pulled away, and he held her hand gently. “Now all I have to do is find a way to hasten the wedding,” he added. "Sick bastard," I cursed, my fists clenched as I blinked the tears away, stepping into the dining area. Selene’s eyes widened. “Sister, when did you get here?” Her soft tone only made my stomach twist on the inside. She seemed cheerful as she rushed toward me, but I stepped back immediately. “There’s no need for the wedding, Nate,” I said, forcing a smile despite the storm brewing inside my chest. Nate’s face didn’t look pleased as he stood up from his seat. He rushed over to pull Selene close while my parents stood up to face me. “Sera, what are you doing here? Don’t tell me you’re stalking me now,” he yelled. “Stalk? I would rather gouge out my eyes than stalk you,” I hissed, turning to my parents. “How long have you known that Nate is with Selene?” I asked, clenching my fists tightly. Their eyes widened in shock as I smirked. “That’s right. I heard everything.”
