Chapter 1
SERA’S POV "Miss, please don’t move too much, or you’ll hurt yourself." The voice boomed inside my ears, and I could hear the sound of my heartbeat increasing. My eyelids flickered open as I swallowed hard. The scent of antiseptic filled my nostrils, accompanied by the beeping of a monitor. I noticed the doctor checking the IV connected to my arm. "The surgery… how was it, doctor? How’s my sister? Is she okay?" I asked, trying to push myself up from the bed. The doctor cast me a soft glance before sighing. "The surgery was successful, but Miss Sera, you’ve been unconscious for Six months due to excessive blood loss." He shook his head slightly. "We’ll run some tests to see—" As he spoke, his words faded in my ears. My eyes scanned the room, searching, but there was no one. No sign of my family or my fiancé. I swallowed the lump in my throat. "What about my family…?" The doctor’s eyes softened even more. "We already notified them, but ever since the surgery, no one has come to see you." My heart twisted inside my chest, and I closed my eyes. "We’ll be leaving now. Your belongings are in the drawer." The doctor offered me a small smile before leaving. Six months had passed since I donated my kidney to my adoptive sister, yet no one cared to check on my well-being. Not even my fiancé, Nate Sterling. I quickly grabbed my phone despite the faint pain in my chest. Turning it on, I hurriedly dialed my parents' number, but it went straight to voicemail. My thumb found its way between my lips as I bit down hard. "Nate," I mumbled with determination. At least he would be happy to see that I was finally awake. My eyes brightened with hope as the phone started ringing, but in less than a second, the call was declined. "What’s going on?" I muttered to myself. A beep sounded, and a message from Nate popped up. "It seems you are awake. Don’t call me now. I’m really busy." I read it out loud, sinking back against the pillow. He hadn’t seen me for months, yet there was no sign of happiness in his words. Tears threatened to spill from my eyes, but I held myself together. Maybe he was really busy, I reassured myself. Curling into a ball, I scrolled through my phone, hoping for a distraction. It had been two months—I wondered how the world had changed. Then, my whole body froze. My eyes locked onto a photo posted by my adoptive mother just a few minutes ago. Tears welled up as I saw Nate locked in a romantic embrace with my adoptive sister, Selene. They looked lost in their own world, so happy together. But nothing prepared me for what I saw next. "What a lovely couple, a perfect match made in heaven." This was utter madness. Anger boiled in my chest. Was this why Nate told me he was busy? Nate was my fiancé. How could my mother do this to me? Why would Nate allow such a thing? The thoughts spiraled inside my head, and I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. "No, I need answers," I mumbled to myself. I flung the covers off my body, swinging my feet onto the floor. Pain shot through my head, and I grabbed the wall for support, panting heavily. I needed an explanation. I dialed Nate’s number, only for it to go straight to voicemail. "Nathaniel, you bastard," I gritted out as tears burned my eyes. "I have to see him." With determination, I pushed myself off the wall, but the next step made my body falter, and I collapsed onto the cold floor. Through my blurry vision, I saw doctors and nurses rushing into my room again. Beep! Beep! Beep! The monitor rang, and slowly, my vision faded into darkness. **** When I woke up, I was confined in the hospital for a while as the doctors continued running tests. Minutes turned into hours, and hours into weeks, but neither Nate nor my family showed up. Each passing day, my heart broke a little more. Once I was discharged, I tried calling Nate again. As expected, he was still unreachable. With no other choice, I hailed a cab home. When I arrived, there was no sign of Nate. I assumed he was still off somewhere with my so-called family. I still felt weak—according to the doctor, I needed rest. But I couldn't stay idle. Not when my relationship was falling apart. I headed to our room to change. Grabbing a robe from the closet, my eyes fell on a box of condoms tucked carefully inside one of Nate’s suit pockets. My heart pounded violently against my ribs as I ran a shaky hand through my hair. "What is going on?" I whispered, picking up the box. My stomach churned when I realized it was empty. "Where the hell is—" A sharp pain pierced my foot. I gritted my teeth as tears pricked my eyes. "Urgh!" Crouching down, I saw a faint trail of blood seeping from the wound. I picked up the culprit—only to realize it was a golden earring. One I could recognize anywhere. Before I could process my thoughts, Nate’s voice rang out sternly. "What are you doing?" I turned to face him. Just the person I needed to speak to. "Is this how you welcome your fiancée after not seeing her for months?" I asked, forcing a sad smile. Ignoring the pain in my foot, I took a step toward him. "You knew I was out of my coma, yet you couldn’t even drop by? Nathaniel Sterling, when did you become so heartless?" I expected remorse. Instead, Nate simply arched a brow. "What’s your deal? I just got back. Can you not bother me? It’s been really peaceful not having to see your face these past months." He scoffed. His words sliced through my chest. I pressed my lips together, unable to believe he was acting this way after everything we had been through. I gave a knowing nod, my throat dry and my heart aching. "So you’ve been working all these months? That’s why you were too busy to see your fiancée? Wow. CEO of the year." A bitter chuckle escaped my lips. "Can you just stop it, Sera? Geez." Nate ruffled his hair, his shoulder bumping against mine as he pushed past me. "You said it yourself—you’re nothing but my fiancée. So stop acting like my wife. It’s getting on my nerves." I let out a hollow laugh. "Oh, you want to talk about getting on someone's nerves?" I held up the empty condom box in his face. "Explain this, Nathaniel Sterling. Why is there a box of condoms in your suit? As far as I know, I was hospitalized, so you need to explain yourself." Nate’s eyes widened. His expression faltered. His jaw clenched in anger as he huffed and snatched the box from my hand.
