Winter Formal

One month later. The gym looked nothing like a gym. Lights, twinkling string lights, a DJ, and a banner that said _“A Night Under the Stars.”_ Mia almost didn’t come. She stood in front of her mirror for 30 minutes in a navy blue dress. Simple. No glitter. No heels she’d trip in. Her mom took like 20 pictures. "You look beautiful, baby." "I look... visible," Mia whispered back. --- Jake was waiting outside her house. Not in a jersey. In a black suit, tie a little crooked, holding a small bouquet of white flowers. His jaw dropped when he saw her. "Whoa. Bookworm." "Quarterback," she said, and immediately felt dumb. He grinned and held out his arm. "You clean up good." "You too." Scout barked from the window like he approved. --- Inside, it was chaos. Music. People. Flashing phones. Ashley was there in a red dress, with a different football player. She saw Jake and Mia, paused for half a second, then nodded once and walked away. No drama. Jake led Mia to a table in the corner. Away from the dance floor. "I remember," he said. "No dancing." Mia laughed. "You said no promises." "Fine. One slow dance. Then we sit." And somehow she said yes. The song was slow. The lights were low. Jake wasn’t teasing or joking. He just held her hand and spun her once. "You’re not invisible anymore," he murmured. Mia looked up at him. "You made sure of that." "Team effort, bookworm." --- Later they sat on the bleachers, sharing punch and watching everyone else. Jake pulled something out of his suit pocket. A folded paper. "My scholarship interview went well," he said. "Coach thinks I’ve got a shot. Full ride." Mia gasped. "Jake! That’s huge!" "Yeah. And it’s because of you. Because you didn’t let me quit on Calc." He bumped her shoulder. "Also got asked to tutor next semester. Said no. One bookworm is enough." Mia rolled her eyes but she was smiling so hard her cheeks hurt. The DJ played one last song. People started leaving. Outside, it was cold. First snow of the year, just starting to fall. Jake walked her to her door. "So," he said, hands in his pockets. "Same time Monday? For... not tutoring?" Mia laughed. "Same time Monday. For... not tutoring." He leaned in and kissed her forehead. Quick. Soft. "Night, Mia." "Night, Jake." She went inside with snow in her hair and his flowers in her hand. --- Epilogue: *"No Longer Invisible"* Senior year ended. Jake got the scholarship. Mia got into her top college for literature. They didn’t go to the same school, but they did Sunday calls, study sessions over video, and he still texted her _“bookworm”_ before every test. The library stayed their spot whenever they were both home. And the girl who used to hide in the stacks? She ended up writing their story.
