NORA’S POV
Dan's words caused shivers to run down my spine. His smile turned into a grin as he watched my eyes widen with shock.
“How about we start with simple things?” he suggested. “Why did you enter our territory?” he demanded.
I stared at Dan’s expression and I knew that lying to him was going to be the death of me. If I wanted to survive this ordeal— or better still, this night; then I had to tell him the entire truth.
“I saw lights and I followed it. I hoped that I would find refuge here,” I answered him.
He nodded his head as he took in the information. “So you believed that our pack would just give you refuge without trying to kill you even after knowing that your father was a wanted man?” he demanded.
“I d—I didn't think about all that. I wanted to find refuge. My father’s men were chasing me and I just wanted to hide away from him,” I stuttered.
“Oh, so you were running? Why were you running from your own father? He tried to kill you?” he asked.
I could not tell if he believed me but I had to keep telling him everything that I knew because my life depended on it.
“No, it— it's nothing like that. I just got sick of watching my father and his girlfriend and I wanted to get away from them,” I explained.
“So if I was paying attention, you got sick of your parents and you ran away. The best place you thought to find refuge is the pack with the greatest hatred for your father?” he demanded.
Putting it this way, my story was beginning to have holes. It did not make sense to anyone who was listening; not even to myself.
“I had no idea that this pack had the greatest hatred. I just wanted food, shelter and warmth,” I answered him truthfully.
He nodded his head at me and pouted his lips as if he was actually sympathizing with me. For a moment, I thought he believed me. I started to believe that maybe I was not going to be killed after all. Maybe they would take me in and give me shelter. Maybe they would give me food and hide me away from my father. Maybe they would accept me as one of them and I could have a home here.
But my fairytale dreams came crashing down when Dan suddenly started clapping his hands for me.
“What a beautiful show you have put up. If you were working at the theatre then a lot of money would be made there. I almost cried. Magnificent tale, you need an award,” he praised me. Sarcasm laced his tone.
I stared back at him in disbelief. Of course he did not believe me. There was nothing I would say that this man would believe. This was a suicide mission.
“Let's get down to business. Are you a spy? You must be a spy. Only a spy can be well trained enough to tell a lie and make it very believeable,” he stated.
I scoffed at his accusation. “I'm no spy!” I exclaimed. If there was one thing I hated, then it was been accused of being something I was not.
Dan chuckled at my outburst. “Oh, is that some attitude? I love that. I knew you won't just spill the truth to me. You would need some kind of motivation to tell me the real truth,” Dan went on. He turned to the guard watching us. “Get me my favorite chair,” he instructed and the guard bowed once in response.
I gulped again. It was just a chair he sent for but I felt as if it was a great harmful device.
“There are ways of making criminals like you talk. I'm sure you know the art of torture. There are many ways I could choose to torture you. I could hold you down and put a clothe over your head, then get someone to pour loads of water on you so that you slowly drown. Or I could get an electrocuting chair. There's also the one were I pluck out all your nails. They are endless. I wonder which technique I would use,” Dan said thoughtfully.
His grin only got wider as he watched my expression turn into horror. The guard came back with a metallic chair and two additional guards that looked as huge as himself.
Dan looked back at them and smiled. “You must have read my mind by bringing back more men,” Dan said to the guard. Then he turned back to me. “I'm going to give you one last chance to tell me the truth. Are you a spy?” he demanded.
I stared at him with wide eyes. He would never believe me but I was determined to keep telling the truth.
“I'm not a spy. . .” I answered in a broken voice.
He nodded in response then he turned to the men. “Tie her to that chair. Let's see what she has to say by the time I pluck out every nail she possesses,” he ordered.
My heart sank deeper into its ribcage as I watched the men open the door to my cell. I started retreating backwards with wide eyes as I stared in horror.
The men smiled as they came for me. I looked sideways trying to find an escape but there was none. There was nowhere to run to. I had no chance against these men. I was on my own.
My eyes moistened at that realization. They filled up with tears fast. I was doomed and there was no one to save me.
“Come on princess, don't you want to play with us?” the creepy guard from earlier questioned and I only whimpered in response.
I shook my head in denial at them as I squeezed myself against the wall as if I could create an exit through it.
But no exit appeared. . .
