DAMIAN’S POV
I stole Dan a suspicious glare.
Was Dan perhaps behind this? Did he carry the matter to the Council?
"What?" Dan asked as he noticed my eyes on him. "You think I'm behind this?" he added.
I narrowed my eyes at him. His anger could make him do things he did not think he would do.
"You of all people should know that I hate them. The last thing I want is to get deeply involved with them," Dan protested.
He was right. I had forgotten that he had a grudge against them. He claimed their decisions were never fair enough. They had denied him the order to match out and destabilize the forest looking for Alpha Derrick.
So if he was not behind this, what then was this meeting about?
"I guess we have to go there and find out ourselves," I finally said.
He turned back to his original destination. "I'll find my way on my own," he declined my unspoken offer to leave together. Then he walked away.
I sighed and continued to my office. On the one hand, I had an angry Beta. On the other, I had my childhood friend who was the daughter of my enemy. Yet I felt entitled to protect her.
I was expected to make a decision and I did not know what to do.
The rest of the day passed by without any other significant event and the closer the time neared to my meeting with the council, the more I felt uneasy.
There was this gnawing feeling at the back of my mind that something bad was about to happen.
I pushed it to the back of my thoughts and departed for the Council House. It was situated in the center of the Silver Moon civilization, unlike the palace.
I got my cloak and wore it to hide my face. It was made out of thick dark fur. This was to prevent attention drawn to me when I entered the town.
I walked out of the building and sent for my white horse. They brought it and I patted her face.
"Hey girl, up for a run in the woods? Don't worry, no harm will come to you Calliope," I assured the horse. It only neighed in response and I chuckled.
Some guards wanted to accompany me but I turned them down. It was something I could do on my own. I did not need protection within my pack walls.
I mounted the horse and hit it on both sides with my legs to get it to gallop away. We soon began to race through the woods. Tonight, the stars were out and a crescent moon sat perfectly in the sky. This gave the moon a form of an enchanted feel. I smiled at the scenery.
Suddenly, I got this nagging feeling that I was been watched. I pulled the reigns of my horse hard. It let out loud neighs as it came to a stop. I scanned the trees around me. I sniffed the air and tried to get a scent but I found nothing.
Like it never even existed in the first place, the feeling died away. I scanned the woods one last time and shrugged it away. Maybe I had imagined it.
I waved the reigns of my horse hard and it was on the move again. The trees soon began to reduce in number. I understood that I was going to be out of the woods soon.
Eventually, I made it to civilization. The many lights that glowed in the town below made it heartwarming to watch.
I began to descend into the town until I became surrounded by cottages and thatched houses. Vendors were calling out to customers. The place was alive with people unlike how it felt back at the palace.
Maidens passed with baskets and gossiped with one another. This place felt safe and happy. It was almost as of I had entered a new world.
This was what I always wanted. I wanted my pack members to remain safe. They did not have to know about what was happening beyond the walls. They did not need to panic due to some form of evil terrorizing the outside world. I was here to keep them safe. They were my responsibility.
None of them seemed to recognize me as I passed. I never really showed my face to them often. Since I chose to stay far away. Most of my visits to town always had me surrounded by my escorts. No one ever really got a peak at my face.
Some people who noticed me stared suspiciously while some concluded that I was probably a guard from the walls. It was also considered a great honor to work at the walls.
I ignored them and reached the center of Silver Moon. The Council House stood in the center shaped like an arena. Asides from summoning me, other events were held here. Mating ceremonies and questioning of accused werewolves.
I stopped at the gates and expected the guards to open them for me but they gave me questioning looks. I sighed and revealed my face to them. They widened their eyes and bowed before pushing the door open. I did not have to speak.
I dismounted my horse and gave it to a guard who was eager to be of service to me. "Take care of Calliope well, she likes a lot of water," I instructed.
The guard nodded and took it away. I walked down the long passage before me. It took me to another set of doors. Of course, guards were at the door. They bowed immediately after they saw me. As expected, they pushed the door open and I walked in.
"The Alpha is here. Arise and pay your respects," a man exclaimed from his seat.
They all arose from their seats and bowed. The sitting order was done in a circular shape so that whoever was been questioned would be left in the center. The sitting spaces were also placed at a very high level compared to the center stage. All Councilmen sat in one small section of the circle. It was a place large enough to accommodate all the people of the Silver Moon pack. It was illuminated with glowing lights attached around the walls.
I spotted Dan standing in the center already. He also bowed like the rest of the people in the room. Maybe he had been the one that I felt watching me in the woods earlier.
I bowed to the Councilmen as a form of respect.
"Now, to what do I owe this meeting?" I demanded.
