DERRICK’S POV
I paced the floor of the armory room.
I should have stopped her. I should have gone after her right away!
When she ran off, I had thought that she would go to her room or hide somewhere in the palace since it was something she did as a child. It was not until one of my men alerted me that they had seen her heading for the border that I realized the gravity of the situation.
I clenched my teeth together in anger. I should have not listened to Khaliya when she told me to let her go, that Nora would come back on her own. Why did children have to be such a burden?!
It was already past midnight and the sky offered no form of light. She could get herself kidnapped or worse killed! Why did Nora have to be so stubborn? I was losing my sleep for this child!
I turned towards the door that led to a terrace and walked to it. I placed my hand on the strong railing and scanned ahead for Armon but there was no sign of him either.
"Where are they?" I complained.
I exhaled sharply. Boiling up like this was not going to help my mental health. I needed to have faith in Armon. He would bring her back.
Armon was the closest thing I had to a Beta. My Beta died ten years ago and Armon had been doing all his work since then. I found him when he was still ten, five years before I had Nora. I trained him myself into the ruthless and intimidating man he had become. He was always competent and got any job I assigned him done. I made him the head of all my men and after my order in the pack, everyone else looked up to him.
Armon was my last hope now. If he could not bring Nora back, then there was no one else who could.
I scanned the woods again, hoping to see Armon and indeed! He showed up in his wolf form along with other wolves; racing back into the castle. But there was something wrong.
I could not find my daughter with them.
My rage intensified and I stormed out of the room. In the current state that I was in, I could commit murder swiftly like it was a peaceful walk down the park.
I descended the stairs and I felt the air grow cold with my mood. I spotted the tall and huge man in the center of the room. His curly dark hair was tied up in a ponytail. He wore a shirt whose arms had been shredded off. His pants had many pockets and his big boot seemed too heavy for an average man. He could easily kill with his legs.
I came to stand before him and my height mirrored his. His brown eyes burned into mine and as I searched deeper, I saw fear. He knew that he had disappointed me.
"Where is my daughter?" I began and my voice carried authority. The rest of his men bowed their heads and did not dare to look me in the eyes.
"We lost her scent," he answered in a low tone.
I scoffed. I never believed that Armon could ever utter such a sentence to me. It was not in his dictionary.
"You cannot be serious," I laughed.
But Armon did not laugh with me. He continued to stare without any word. That was when realization struck and my rage blinded my judgement.
In a swift movement, I grabbed Armon by the neck and lifted him from the ground. "How could you lose my daughter's scent?! How could you just lose her? Am I a joke to you? Is this what it has come to? The freedom I have given you has caused you to take me for granted!" I roared.
Armon did not beg. He just lifted his hand to my iron hold on his neck to attempt to free himself. But his efforts were all futile. I continued to strangle him. The red in my vision continued to burn my senses and I was ready to kill him off right there.
If there was something I hated, then it was failure. Once a person failed me, they lost my respect and they became nothing before my eyes. For the first time, Armon had failed me and he had instantly become trash!
Armon continued to choke on my grip. His face started to go pale. He was running out of air and it was only a matter of time before he died.
"Allow me t— to go back ou— out there!" He stuttered as he struggled to speak.
I continued to strangle him as I glared intensely at him. Then I noticed the look in his eyes.
He was just a loyal dog who wanted to satisfy my wishes. He did not need to die just yet. He was still useful. I could kill him some other time because honestly, I did not care about him anymore. For all I cared, he was a broken tool.
I pushed him away and he fell off on the floor. Glaring at him from above, he did not look so intimidating anymore.
"How do you plan to find her since you lost her scent out of the blue?" I demanded.
Armon massaged his neck as he coughed his heart away. He had still not recovered so he had to make me wait again for a simple answer.
Eventually, he found his breath after wasting two minutes of my time.
"She is probably in one of the other three packs of Wolfbane. I will find out which pack she is in and I will bring her back. I will not come back until I do," Armon promised me.
I glared at him for a long time before finally speaking. "Fine, you have my blessings. Bring my daughter back," I ordered.
He nodded and raced out of the building alone. But as I stared after him, I knew that he was going to fail me once again.
