With their notes arranged on two adjacent tables outside on the deck behind Campbell's bungalow, Pari and Campbell updated each other on the results of their interviews with Salvador Romero, Orion Alexander, and Manami Murakami. Pari swirled the ice cubes in her glass of tea, checking off points she wanted to share and discuss. Campbell puffed away on his pipe, confident that he had angled his chair in such a way that the direction of the breeze carried the smoke fully away from Pari. That was always their arrangement. Pari was a non-smoker, but she did not pass judgment on Campbell or try to change him. In return, he paid careful attention to ensure that during the times he smoked in her presence that the smoke steered completely clear of her.
