Darius's POV
I stood at my window, gazing out into the night, as Beta Elias entered my room.
"Darius, you summoned me?" he asked, his voice low.
I turned, my eyes locking onto his. "Luna. She's the key."
Beta Elias raised an eyebrow. "The ancient magic?"
I nodded. "With her powers, we can unlock it. And I'm certain it will save our pack."
Beta Elias's expression turned thoughtful. "But at what cost?"
I clenched my jaw. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. First, we must ensure Luna's cooperation."
Beta Elias's gaze narrowed. "And what of Shadow Pack?"
My smile was cold. "We'll destroy them, of course. Luna's powers will be the catalyst."
Beta Elias's eyes gleamed with anticipation. "The prophecy unfolds."
I nodded. "Luna's the linchpin. Her emotions are volatile, but with guidance, she'll harness her powers."
Beta Elias's expression turned serious. "And what of her feelings for you?"
I waved dismissively. "Irrelevant. Our pack's survival is paramount."
Beta Elias's gaze lingered on mine, as if searching for something.
"Darius, are you certain—"
"I am," I interrupted. "Luna's powers will save our pack. And with her by our side, Shadow Pack will fall."
Beta Elias nodded, his expression resolute. "Then we proceed."
Together, we began outlining our strategy, Luna at the forefront.
Unbeknownst to her, she held the fate of our pack in her hands.
And I would ensure she fulfilled her destiny.
No matter the cost.
I watched Beta Elias sit, his expression thoughtful.
I sighed inwardly, the weight of maintaining my stoic facade bearing down on me.
No one knew the toll it took to keep my emotions hidden.
Least of all, my growing attraction to Luna.
Her fiery spirit and determined heart drew me in.
But I couldn't afford to acknowledge it, not now, not to anyone, not even to Beta.
"Luna's feelings for you aren't irrelevant, are they?" Beta asked, his eyes piercing.
I maintained my neutral expression. "They're irrelevant. Nothing more."
Beta's gaze lingered, as if searching for cracks in my armor.
"What of her trust?" he asked, his tone measured.
I leaned against my desk, my eyes never leaving Beta's. "I'm gaining her trust. She's already invested 60% in me."
Beta raised an eyebrow. "That's impressive."
In reality, I had no intention of using Luna solely for my purposes. But it wasn't my fault she was the key… I was obviously torn between my growing attraction and my pack, but obviously, I'll have to do what'll secure the pack, even if it means using Luna for our selfish purpose.
There was more to my interest in her.
More than strategy or pack politics.
But I couldn't reveal that to Beta.
Not yet.
Perhaps not ever.
"Luna's trust will be crucial," Beta said, his voice pulling me back to the present.
I nodded. "I'll ensure she remains... invested."
Beta's expression turned serious. "Darius, we can't afford to lose her."
"We're not going to lose her. Not now, when we're so close."
I agreed, my thoughts drifting to Luna.
Her passion, her strength, and her unwavering determination.
I would protect her, no matter the cost.
Even if it meant guarding my own heart.
"Luna's control is hard to tame," Beta Elias emphasized. "We can't also afford another incident like today."
I nodded, my jaw clenched. "I know. Shadow Pack must be eliminated swiftly."
My voice dripped with venom. "Those abominations have plagued our lands for far too long."
Beta's expression mirrored my disgust. "Their cruelty knows no bounds."
"Exactly," I spat. "Which is why Luna's powers are vital. We need her to take out Shadow Pack's leadership."
Beta nodded. "Agreed. But first, she must master her emotions. Her instability poses a risk to our entire plan."
I rubbed my temples, frustration mounting. "I know, and I've been working with her, but her progress is slow."
Beta leaned forward. "We need to accelerate her training. The longer we wait, the more vulnerable we become."
I slammed my fist on the desk. "I know! But Luna's not a tool to be wielded; she's a wild card. Unpredictable."
Beta's calm demeanor soothed my irritation. "Darius, we must balance patience with urgency. Luna's potential is worth the risk."
I took a deep breath, regaining composure. "You're right, as always, Beta."
Our conversation continued, strategies and tactics flowing freely.
But beneath the surface, my thoughts churned.
Luna's safety.
Her trust.
Her heart.
All were intertwined with our mission.
And my own desires.
But I pushed those thoughts aside.
For now, duty came first.
Shadow Pack's destruction.
And Luna's control.
The fate of our pack depended on it.
Beta Elias leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Luna's already loyal to you, Darius. That's a significant advantage."
I nodded, my eyes never leaving his. "I know."
Beta's gaze narrowed. "Her devotion will make our mission easier for you, Darius."
I paused, my thoughts drifting to Luna's unwavering dedication. "Yes, but at what cost?"
Beta's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"
I stood, pacing the room. "When we use her to destroy Shadow Pack... what toll will it take on her soul?"
Beta's expression turned serious. "You're concerned about her emotional well-being?"
I stopped pacing, facing him. "I'm not concerned about her well-being. I'm concerned about her humanity. We're asking her to unleash destruction on a massive scale."
Beta's voice was measured. "Luna understands the stakes. She's willing to do what's necessary for the pack."
I clenched my jaw. "Is she? Truly?"
Beta's eyes locked onto mine. "Darius, we've discussed this. Luna's the key to our survival."
I knew he was right.
But the weight of responsibility settled heavy on my shoulders.
Luna's loyalty was unwavering.
But what would be the cost of her devotion?
Would she emerge from this battle unscathed?
Or would the shadows consume her, too? I had so—too many questions but with no answers…
I pushed the doubts aside.
For now, our pack's survival comes first… whether Luna likes it or not.
Our pack's survival.
No matter the cost.
