Chapter 2: The Dragon Pack

The old woman showed me a dagger she hid under her clothes and encouraged me to take it. "We all want Jamal dead," she murmured to avoid being heard by some guards that were at the gate. "Take it." I drew the dagger, hid it, and turned to take my leave. "You also need a disguise too." She also gave me the thick cloak she used to conceal her face. I was not afraid of taking it because I'm immune to evil. "You are the most powerful female in the Mathilde Pack, but you have a weakness," she smiled. I stopped immediately and slowly turned my head. Xiane had told me several times that I had a weakness, but she never told me what it is. "What is my weakness?" "The touch of the weak King! Avoid his touch like a curse. Do not let him touch you." "Why?" "No one fights himself!" she smirked and exposed her decayed teeth one more time. I frowned because I did not understand what she meant. "You must not allow him to touch you and do not touch him! Bury the dagger in his chest as soon as he is closer to you. You can only defeat him with this spellbound blade. Hold it tight and do not let him take it away from you," she said, and I snickered because Jamal, I knew, was the weakest wolf in the whole universe. He was the weakest slave we had in our pack before I drove him and his mother away. Just like the girls said, a child can defeat him in combat. "Is this a trick?" "Keep going," Xiane said. I was happy to hear her deep voice again. It had been a while since she talked to me. Since I rejected Jamal and sent him out of our pack, Xiane hardly talked to me the way she does and I was unhappy. Her voice I just heard made me feel like I had a backup. I'm nothing without Xiane. I left the old witch without saying a word. I looked in her direction again when I got to the gate, but she was nowhere to be found. "I want to kill the weak slave, please, do not stop me," I said in my mind. "I know why we are here and I can't stop you," Xiane responded. I found it weird that she had started talking to me. Probably because Jamal is close again. "What do you want?" One of the guards who were safeguarding the gate asked. "I want to see the… Alpha." "Why do you want to see the Alpha?" "I heard the he needs a surrogate mother." The guard looked at me, sighed, and looked away. "It's a traditional surrogacy, I hope you are aware?" He asked. "I'm aware." "Go back to wherever you came from. The king doesn't want strangers!" Another guard shouted. I became crazed with anger. Choking back my anger, I tried to speak calmly, but I couldn't. "Would you take your unguarded tongue out of this conversation?" I said angrily. He stood up and walked unhurriedly close to me. "Leave here now!" He shrieked. I was not used to people ordering me around, so I shunned him and decided to go in. He held my clothes to stop me from taking further steps. I jabbed him away violently and he saw himself on the floor. I covered my head with the cloak the old woman gave me and walked swiftly. "She is a witch!" The first guard I talked to shouted and took a step backward. "Notify those in the castle immediately!!" I didn't look back to see what was going on. I just heard the deafening sound of the emergency alarm. All the people in the big castle began to run helter-skelter and that gave me the opportunity to enter the castle unnoticed. The tricky castle was highly protected by knights with shining rapiers. I hid behind a molded dragon when I saw two men hurrying out, probably to know what was going on. I quickly used the stairs as soon as they walked past without noticing me. I was walking down a wide and long corridor hurriedly when I heard a deep male voice behind me. "Stop right there!" "Put your hands up and turn around slowly." I raised my hands and turned around slowly. "Who let you into this castle?" "The men at the gate." "Why?" "I'm here for the surrogacy." "Oh…I see," he said and returned his sword to its sheath. "Have you been examined?" "Yes, I'm a virgin." "Alright, come with me." I followed him to the last level of the castle. He opened a door and gestured to me. I walked fearlessly into the room. He shut the door without saying anything. I stood behind the window, watching the whole city and the stunning statue of a dragon that stood at the center of the city. It was quite a beautiful sight to behold. I wondered why the Goddess cursed such a beautiful city and gave them a useless Alpha when they cried for a protector. I sat on the bed and watched the sunset through the window. Slowly, darkness began to envelop the whole city as the full moon that was still far from the horizon was still golden. I looked at the door when the handle whined. A woman came in and bowed her head as if she knew I was an Alpha's daughter. Everywhere was dark but I could see her. "Good evening, ma'am," she said and dropped a basket she was carrying on a table. She took a candle and a lighter out of the basket. She lit the candle and put it inside a red eerie glass. The reflector made the entire room look atrocious. It was as if she knew blood would be shed tonight. "The bathroom is there and your nightwear is here," she said, and left the room. Frankincense - the scent of the candle filled the entire room and I noticed it was not just an ordinary candle but a special herbal blend. Werewolves burn this kind of candle as an offering to the Moon Goddess. We also burn the candle when we need something from the Goddess, especially her presence. "Well, whatever ritual, Jamal is planning tonight will end in total disaster," I murmured. . Twenty minutes later, the full moon came overhead and lighten the landscape. I kept looking through the window, gaping at some young wolves that were howling at the moon as I waited for the delightful moment when their Alpha's body would drop dead on the floor. I couldn't wait to see Jamal's blood gush out the same way he made mine flow for a whole year. In the middle of the night, the door opened again and I knew the time to put an end to my mystery had come. I stood up and positioned myself for a serious attack. It was either I succeeded or I died and I did not see anything that could stop me from killing him tonight. After all, he was a weak Alpha.
