Blurb

When two powerful billionaire families, the Morells and the O’Connells, arrange a marriage to merge their empires, it seems like the perfect union, especially since Anika Daphne Morell and Liam O’Connell are already in love. But on the night before their wedding, tragedy strikes. Liam is shot and killed before Anika’s eyes, and his brother, Colby O’Connell, is found at the scene. Convinced of his guilt, Anika is forced into a marriage with Colby to preserve the merger despite her hatred and grief. As Colby is arrested and put on trial, he insists on his innocence. Slowly, cracks begin to appear in the story Anika believed. After uncovering suspicious behavior and hidden evidence, she reluctantly agrees to help him find the real killer.Their investigation leads them to Richard O’Connell, the brothers’ uncle, who manipulated events to seize control of the family empire. Alongside him is Marisol, Anika’s estranged mother, whose return brings even more secrets to light. Together, they orchestrate deception, violence, and betrayal to maintain power. As Anika and Colby grow closer, their partnership turns into a deep, complicated love. But danger escalates when Olivia, secretly Richard’s daughter, enters their lives, infiltrating the company and manipulating Anika’s brother Julian. With threats closing in and loyalties tested, Anika must uncover the truth before everything and everyone she loves.

The Calm Before the Storm
The city below shimmered like liquid gold beneath the night sky, the skyline stretching endlessly beyond the balcony of the O’Connell mansion. Soft jazz floated through the open doors, mingling with the faint sound of laughter from the party inside. Champagne glasses clinked, and somewhere, her name was being called, but Anika didn't move. She stood at the railing, her satin dress catching the city’s glow, her thoughts far from the celebration happening behind her. It wasn’t just any engagement party, it was the event of the year. The union that would merge two of the most powerful dynasties in the country. The Morells and the O’Connells. Her father had called it a “strategic alliance.” The media called it a power merger, but for Anika, it had always been something simpler. Love. A hand brushed against her waist, warm and familiar. “You disappeared on me,” came a voice, smooth and teasing. She turned to find Liam O’Connell, her fiancé, standing behind her in a tailored black suit that seemed made for him and him alone. His tie was slightly loosened, his smile easy, the same one that had once made her forget how to breathe. “I needed some air,” she said softly. He arched his brow. “From what? My mother’s endless toasts or your father’s negotiations disguised as compliments?” That drew a quiet laugh from her. “Both.” He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “They’ll have to get used to the idea that this…” He lifted her hand, brushing his lips against the diamond ring that glinted under the city lights. “...isn’t just business.” For a moment, the world quieted around them. She could almost believe that the stares, the expectations, the silent deals signed behind champagne glasses didn’t matter. “You know,” Liam said, tracing his thumb along her fingers, “sometimes I think you see through all of this better than I do.” “I grew up around men who think emotion is a liability,” she replied. “You learn to read the pauses more than the words.” He smiled faintly, but his gaze drifted just for a second toward the sliding glass doors where his younger brother, Colby, stood talking to one of Anika’s brothers. Colby was taller, darker-haired, less polished, but with that same unmistakable O’Connell confidence. “Colby looks uncomfortable,” Anika said, noticing the tension. “He always does at these things,” Liam replied. “He hates the idea of being paraded around like a prop, but he's happy for me. For us.” Anika nodded. She liked Colby, or at least she used to. There was a sharpness to him that fascinated her. He never said what he didn’t mean, and he had the rare courage to look her father in the eye. “Come on,” Liam said, breaking her thoughts. “Let’s face them together. One last time before they marry us off like we’re royalty.” He extended his hand, and she took it, smiling as he led her back inside. Inside the Ballroom, crystal chandeliers glowed above a sea of black suits and shimmering gowns. The two families stood out effortlessly, power looked good on them. Marcel O’Connell, Liam’s father, stood near the head table, his expression set in quiet authority. He was the kind of man who didn’t need to speak to be listened to. Beside him, Rita O’Connell, silk blonde hair tied up in a bun, beautiful brown eyes that always made Marcel weak. She wore a gentle smile, though her eyes missed nothing. On the other side of the room, Alexander Morell was deep in conversation with the finance minister, his voice low and persuasive. His three sons, Julian, Morgan, and Ethan, flanked him like shadows. Each one alert, each one watching over their sister. When Anika entered with Liam, every head turned. Her father’s stern expression softened, just slightly. “There she is,” he said, lifting his glass. “The future of two empires.” The applause that followed was polite, rehearsed, hollow. Liam raised his glass in return, smiling as though none of this weight pressed on him. Colby stood a few feet away, watching, unreadable. As the toasts went on, Anika’s gaze drifted toward the families gathered together, powerful men and women smiling through secrets. She could feel the tension humming beneath the surface like an electric current. Something in her gut whispered that power always demanded a price. But she ignored it for tonight, at least. When Liam leaned closer and whispered, “You look like the only real thing in this room,” she believed him. For the first time in her life, Anika Morell allowed herself to imagine forever. The party ended long after midnight. The lights of the ballroom dimmed one by one, leaving the O’Connell mansion in a hush that felt both peaceful and heavy. Anika stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, barefoot now, her gown a cascade of soft ivory silk pooling around her feet. The city stretched below her, a thousand glowing veins of gold and silver threading through the dark. Liam entered quietly behind her, the sound of his cufflinks clicking faintly as he removed them. “You didn’t say much after the last toast,” he said, his voice low. “I didn’t need to.” He moved beside her, studying her reflection in the glass. “You were thinking about them again, your father and mine.” She hesitated before answering. “They’re both too happy. That’s what worries me. I’ve never seen two men smile like that unless they’ve already won something.” Liam laughed under his breath. “They’re businessmen. Winning is their love language.” “Maybe,” she said softly. “But sometimes I wonder what they’re willing to lose in the process.” He turned toward her then, his eyes catching hers in the reflection. “You think our families are dangerous.” “I think power is,” she said simply. “It changes people. It hides things.” He slipped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close until her head rested against his chest. His heartbeat was steady, the rhythm that had always grounded her. “Then maybe it’s our turn to change what power looks like,” he whispered. “You and I, we’ll run the companies differently. Honestly. Together.” She smiled faintly. “You really believe that?” “I do. You’ll make a better CEO than I ever could, Anika. You see things before they happen.” Her chest ached at the tenderness in his voice. He always believed in her, saw her not as a business move, but as an equal. She turned in his arms, studying his face. “Promise me something,” she said. “Anything.” “No matter what happens… don’t let them turn us into them.” He brushed a lock of hair from her cheek, his thumb lingering. “You have my word,” he said softly. “No matter what happens.” There was something in the way he said it, the faintest tremor of uncertainty, like a whisper of fate shifting. She frowned. “Liam?” He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I’ve just been thinking about the merger, the pressure, the meetings. I want all this noise to stop. I just want us.” She reached for his hand, squeezing it gently. “Then after the wedding, we’ll disappear for a while. Somewhere quiet. No fathers, no business, no press.” His smile warmed again. “You’d actually leave all this behind?” “For peace?” she said. “In a heartbeat.” He pulled her closer, resting his forehead against hers. “God, I love you,” he murmured. “You know that, right?” She closed her eyes. “I know.” Their kiss was slow, unhurried, full of the kind of affection that made the world fall away. When they finally parted, Liam laughed softly. “You realize our families will think we’re plotting some grand rebellion.” “Maybe we are,” she said, half-smiling. He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Then let’s make a pact, just you and me.” “A pact?” “Yeah,” he said. “That no matter how messy things get, we don’t let anyone, not my father, not your father, not the press come between us. Ever.” She looked at him for a long moment, then nodded. “Deal.” He kissed her again, sealing it with the same quiet certainty that had always anchored her. Outside, thunder rolled faintly in the distance, the first growl of an approaching storm. Neither of them noticed. The following morning, the newspapers would call them The Power Couple of a Generation. Very soon, one of their names would make the front page for a very different reason.
