CHAPTER ONE
THE SON NO ONE CLAIMED Rain poured steadily over the glass tower of Vale Corporation, turning the city skyline into a blur of lights and shadows. The building dominated the financial district. Forty-two floors of steel, glass, and power. To the outside world, Vale Corporation was a symbol of success. It owned half the city’s infrastructure tech companies, construction firms, logistics networks, and private investment portfolios scattered across continents. But tonight, on the top floor, the air inside the executive boardroom was thick with something far less polished. Tension. Twelve members of the board sat around a long black conference table that gleamed under the soft overhead lights. Some of them stared at the documents in front of them, pretending to work. Others stared at the man standing near the window. Adrian Vale. The problem no one liked to acknowledge. The founder’s illegitimate son. Outside the massive glass wall behind him, rain slid down in quiet streams. Adrian stood with his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his dark coat, watching the city far below like it belonged to him. In many ways, he believed it should. The silence inside the room stretched long enough to become uncomfortable. Finally, a chair scraped against the floor. “Are we going to address the obvious problem here?” The voice was sharp. Controlled. Adrian turned slowly from the window. At the far end of the table sat Alexander Vale. The legitimate son. The heir. Alexander looked exactly like the kind of man who inherited an empire. Impeccably dressed. Confident posture. Cold eyes. Everything about him carried the quiet authority of someone who had never once been told that he didn’t belong. Adrian studied him for a moment before speaking. “That depends,” he said calmly. “What exactly is the problem?” A few members of the board shifted uneasily in their seats. Alexander leaned forward slightly, his fingers resting on the polished table. “The problem,” he said evenly, “is that you are standing in a room where you have absolutely no authority.” Adrian smiled faintly. “Is that so?” “You’re not a board member,” Alexander continued. “You hold no shares in this company. And you certainly have no right to interrupt an executive meeting.” He paused deliberately. “You shouldn’t be here.” The message behind the words was unmistakable. You don’t belong here. Adrian had heard that sentence his entire life. He walked slowly toward the table, the sound of his footsteps echoing softly across the polished marble floor. “You know,” he said quietly, “people keep telling me that.” Alexander watched him without blinking. “Telling you what?” “That I don’t belong.” Adrian stopped across from him. For a moment, the two men simply stared at each other. Half-brothers. Connected by blood. Divided by everything else. Adrian tilted his head slightly. “It’s interesting,” he continued. “This entire company exists because of our father.” Alexander’s jaw tightened slightly. “Yes,” he said. “And he left it to his family.” A subtle murmur rippled around the table. Everyone understood exactly what he meant. Adrian wasn’t family. Not the kind that got mentioned in legal documents. Not the kind that inherited power. Just the kind people tried to forget. Adrian’s smile didn’t fade. “Family,” he repeated thoughtfully. He began slowly circling the table. “Such an important word.” No one interrupted him. Some of the executives avoided eye contact entirely. Others watched him with open curiosity. Alexander’s voice cut through the room again. “You’re wasting our time.” Adrian stopped walking. Then he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thin black folder. Without saying a word, he slid it across the table toward Alexander. The folder stopped directly in front of him. Alexander didn’t touch it at first. “What is this?” “Information,” Adrian replied. After a moment, Alexander opened the folder. The change in his expression was immediate. First confusion. Then disbelief. Then something darker. The documents inside were financial reports. Private accounts. Internal transfers. Transactions that had never appeared in official company audits. Several board members leaned forward slightly. “Where did you get those?” Alexander asked quietly. Adrian rested his hands casually on the back of a chair. “You inherited this company,” he said calmly. “I inherited its secrets.” The room fell silent. Alexander closed the folder slowly. “You think blackmail makes you powerful?” Adrian chuckled softly. “No.” He straightened his coat. “I think leverage does.” One of the executives shifted nervously in his seat. “You’re making a mistake,” he muttered. Adrian glanced at him. “Am I?” Alexander stood up from his chair. “You’re trying to threaten people who built this company.” Adrian’s eyes sharpened slightly. “No,” he said. “I’m reminding them that their power isn’t as secure as they think.” The tension in the room grew heavier. Then Adrian glanced toward the door. Right on cue, it opened. A tall figure stepped inside. Broad shoulders. Dark suit. Sharp eyes that immediately scanned the entire room in a matter of seconds. The board members turned toward the doorway in confusion. Adrian didn’t look surprised at all. “My bodyguard,” he said casually. Someone scoffed. “You think you need protection in a corporate meeting?” Adrian’s gaze flickered briefly back to Alexander. “When people start losing control,” he said calmly, “they tend to do irrational things.” For the first time, the newcomer spoke. His voice was low. Controlled. “I’m here to prevent that.” The room went quiet again. Adrian turned slightly and looked at him properly for the first time. The bodyguard stood perfectly still, his expression unreadable. Alert. Focused. Not intimidated by the room. Interesting. Very interesting. Adrian studied him for a moment longer than necessary. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Lucas.” “Just Lucas?” “Yes.” Adrian smiled faintly. “Mysterious.” Lucas didn’t react. Across the table, Alexander’s patience finally snapped. “You walk in here, threaten the board, and bring security like you’re already in charge?” Adrian slipped his hands back into his pockets. “I never said that.” “Then what exactly do you want?” Adrian’s eyes moved slowly around the table, meeting each person’s gaze. “I want you to understand something.” The room felt suddenly smaller. More tense. Adrian leaned slightly forward. “You can pretend I don’t exist.” “You can pretend I have no claim.” “You can even pretend I don’t belong here.” His gaze landed on Alexander again. “But the truth is very simple.” He tapped the black folder lightly with his finger. “I know everything.” No one spoke. The rain outside grew heavier against the windows. Then Adrian stepped back from the table. “Oh,” he added casually. “One more thing.” He glanced at Lucas again. “Looks like I’ll need protection.” Because in a room full of powerful enemies… Someone would eventually try to kill him. And when that happened— Adrian Vale planned to be ready.
