MATTHEW’S POV

Carter and I glare at each other once more knowing this isn’t finished before I leave to go catch up with Aspen.

She is halling a.ss.

Thank g.od for playing sports because I’d be out of breath right now if not..

“Hey Aspen ah wait up.

I could use a muffin or four why don’t I show you to the cafeteria.”

I say to her as I get closer to her and let out a light chuckle.

She gives me a beautiful smile.

“Four huh?

First things first if your here to babysit me for my brother please save it. I’m a big girl and can find my way.”

She responds to me and I hold my smile in..

I enjoy her sassiness too much.

“No I promise I’m not here to babysit. Just helping a fellow friend out.”

I say as she checks her phone and

I watch her for a second. She must’ve noticed because she looks up at me with those hazel eyes.

They are mesmerizing..

ASPEN’S POV

“Alright then lead the way.”

I say looking at him and he motions his head to the side and I follow.

Am I dreaming?

This guy looks like a god and he’s way out of my league.

It’s not even first period yet and so much has happened already..

I was always known as Asher’s twin sister or the really quiet girl at our old school.

Sh.it I’ve talked more the last hour to complete strangers than I have to people I’ve know my whole life.

I just laugh to myself thinking of it.

Can someone really come out if their shell just like that?

It definitely takes the meaning “new year new me” seem easy..

Matty and I walk down the crowded corridor. We pass by a few more students and I can smell coffee even stronger now.

We must be close.

“What’s”

“Where”

We both say at the same time and we laugh.

He looks down at me smiling.

“You go first”

As we get to the entrance of the cafeteria and head over towards the line.

There’s quite a few of students here too.

“I was just going to ask what’s good here for breakfast”

I say watching where I’m walking so I don’t accidentally bump into anyone again or trip over myself..

“That’s easy.

I always get the muffins.

They heat them up and truthfully I would buy them all if it wasn’t for the limit of only being able to purchase four per student”

He laughs.

“Your turn”

I say looking up at him.

“So where you guys from?”

He asks me while we wait in line.

“I thought Asher mentioned it to Danny but we are born and raised from Polson, Montana”

I said.

“Yeah he probably did but I wasn’t paying attention to him much..

You guys have traveled pretty far for just little ol’ Woodland Falls.”

Matty says and I can hear the curiosity in his voice.

“Ah yeah my moms work brought us here and we have some family in town too.

You might actually know them although we haven’t met them yet.

Sev and Sasha Connors.”

I lightly smile.

“Yeah actually I do know them. Sev is cool as sh.it. He’s captain of the Varsity football team and quarterback this year since Jared graduated last year so he got pushed up.

I’m Junior Varsity right now but hoping this year I can make it to Varsity I have been bulking up the whole summer so hopefully I can make an impression.

Sasha is cool too she’s in my grade but she’s boy crazy and actually one of my exes best friends so I tend to keep my distance from her. I don’t mind introducing you to Sev if I see him though.”

He says running his hand threw his hair lightly laughing as we enter the line.

“Good morning Matthew, few muffins for you today?”

The older lunch lady asked him.

“Yes please and a few for my friend Aspen too she is new here”

Matty said smiling at me.

“Coming right up”

She says grabbing them on the tray in front of her.

“Alright so here’s four for you and two for Aspen.”

As she was handing them to us.

“You can call me Mrs. Ann by the way sweetie. I have been working in this lovely cafeteria for decades.

I’m here every breakfast and every lunch so don’t hesitate to holler at me for anything”

Mrs. Ann says.

“Thank you ma’am, nice to meet you.”

I smiled at her.

Once we got over to the registers Matty refused to let me pay for the muffins even though they were only two dollars..

“Well thank you for the muffins, maybe I’ll see you around sometime.”

I say giving him a warm smile debating on staying to eat or just going to my class.

Asher texted me to let me know he is in homeroom we’ve got like ten minutes left until the bell so I don’t want to be late.

Hopefully I find it.. My train of thought was cut off by Matty talking again..

I thought he left already. I’ve been in my own world too long. I need to stop doing that..

“The pleasure is all mine.

Do you want to sit down with me and eat before heading to class?”

He says looking down at me.

“Are you sure you want to be see with me? You know I’m a freshman right?”

I realize how that must’ve sounded.. Welp the new me lasted long.

Now I’m embarrassed trying to look anywhere but him and I see the corner of his lip slightly curl.

“That’s okay I’m single as a Pringle. There’s nothing for you to be worried about.”

He says with his beautiful smile trying to reassure me but I’m not falling for it..

This whole situation is strange..

I just nod my head and we sit down at a table near the large window’s in the cafeteria.

“Um can I ask you something?”

I say looking into his eyes.

“I’m an open book.

You can ask me anything.”

He says eating his muffins.

“Why are you being so nice to me if it’s not for my brother?”

I say and he looks surprised..

Kinda as if he was waiting for a different question.

“Truthfully? You intrigue me.”

He says eating some more looking into my eyes.

I gulp.

“I intrigue you?

How so.”

I take a bite of the warm muffin and accidentally let out a small moan.

Realizing what had just happened I can’t help but laugh.

“Well that’s one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard.”

He winks.

I put my face into my hands for a second embarrassed and he laughs.

I slowly look up and I’m sure my cheeks are bright red..

“I don’t know just yet but you are so different from any girls I’ve ever met. I know your new here but I can’t help but feel like I’ve known you for a lifetime..”

He says looking at me.

Cheese and rice.. I want to know what’s in this towns drinking water?

I got to move back to Montana, I laugh to myself.

“I’m usually not this straight forward but like I said there’s just something about you.”

He says getting my attention and giving me a warm smile.

“Listen I’m very flattered but I just don’t think you should waste your time on someone like me..

I don’t even know what to expect this school year let alone just today.. Plus you don’t even know me.”

I say before taking a bite of my food.

“I’m not wasting time. We can be friends right?” He says as he inhaled the rest of his food.

“Of course we can..

I’m gonna go find my homeroom,

Asher sent me where it is.

I will see you around?”

I look at him with a warm smile.

“Definitely and if not in school then the bus.”

We smile at each other as I start standing up and leave to find my class.

As attractive as he is I really do need to focus on myself for a bit.

Granted I’ve never had a boyfriend before so my lonely radar is obviously going off now..

High school is like a huge match maker aside from academic’s.

Basically everyone always dates or hooks up with one another during the course of four years.

Although all the guys are freaking attractive as he.ll here I need to take a step back and find myself before getting involved with anyone..

MATTHEW’S POV

Talking to her is refreshing. I wanted to make a good impression so I didn’t let her pay for her breakfast on the first day.

Who cares if it was just a few bucks.

When she was eating and made noises I was thinking of very inappropriate things.

After I watched her leave I saw my buddies Marco and Jaden walk in so thankfully they didn’t see me with Aspen.

Not that I don’t want to be seen with her it’s just I don’t want them harping on me.

If I can be her friend then I will I don’t need them making guy talk about her i’ll hurt them..

“Hey brotha. How’s it?” Jaden asks as he walked over while Marco grabs something to eat first.

“Not much man just had breakfast now I’m gonna head to class the bells about to ring.”

He agrees and Marco walks over.

“Waddup.

Any of us got classes together this year?”

I start laughing.

“Bro did you already smoke? Aren’t you suppose to be sober. The lacrosse coach will be testing a lot this year..

But I’m out I’ll send you a message when I get my schedule.”

I stand and head out the cafe making my way to class.

I just so happen walk past my ex Erica.. Ugh.. Erica Wilde and her group of robot Barbie’s.. I mean friends.. Don’t get me wrong they are all beautiful girls but they act dumb and follow her command like a robot. That’s not attractive. I try and make a turn and she calls out to me.

I don’t know why she keeps doing this. She broke up with me. Why must she keep pestering me.

“Matty. Baby I’ve tried calling you every day. When are we going to get together and talk about this.”

She says to me with her hands on her hips. Before I would have been turned on by that with her dark brown hair and pouty lips but she ruined everything.

We tried hooking up a few times after we broke up but it just wasn’t the same for me and honestly I didn’t want to get an std..

Yeah she has been a busy bee.. She was around a lot of parties this past summer so what goes around comes around and apparently it itches from what she has confessed to me.. What a time that was.

“We don’t have anything to talk about Erica. Have a good year. I really can’t be late for class.”

I say to her and walk to my class laughing to myself because little does she know I changed my number too. See ya bi.tch.
