episode 1 the girl who heard the wolfs part 1
The forest had rules, even if no one ever wrote them down. Rule one: Don’t go in alone. Rule two: Don’t go in after dark. Rule three—spoken only in half-jokes and warnings lowered to a whisper—if you hear wolves, run. Lena broke all three. She didn’t mean to. Not at first. It started with the sound. A low, aching howl drifted through the trees like a wound opening in the air. Not sharp. Not threatening. It sounded… lonely. Like something calling out and not knowing if anyone would answer. Lena stopped on the narrow dirt path, her breath fogging in the cold evening. Pine needles crunched beneath her sneakers as she turned slowly, scanning the shadows between the trunks. The sun was sinking fast, bleeding orange and purple through the branches. She should have been heading home already. Her aunt would be mad. Again. “Stupid,” Lena muttered to herself. Still, she didn’t move. The howl came again, closer this time. It vibrated in her chest instead of her ears, tugging at something deep inside her she didn’t have words for. Fear flickered, yes—but curiosity burned brighter. She’d lived on the edge of Blackridge Forest for almost a year, ever since her parents died and her aunt moved them here “for a fresh start.” The town treated the forest like a living thing—temperamental, dangerous, and best left alone. But Lena had always felt watched here. Not in a threatening way. In a waiting way. She stepped off the path. Branches scraped her jacket as she pushed deeper between the trees, heart pounding louder with every step. The air grew colder, heavier, as if the forest were holding its breath. Shadows thickened, stretching unnaturally long. Then she saw it. A wolf stood in a clearing ahead—huge, silver-gray, its fur catching the last light of the day. It was larger than any wolf Lena had ever seen in pictures. Its eyes glowed an impossible amber, fixed directly on her. Lena froze. The wolf didn’t snarl. Didn’t bare its teeth. It simply stared, head tilted slightly, as if recognizing her. Her instincts screamed at her to run. Instead, she whispered, “Hey…” The word barely left her mouth before the wolf stiffened. In one smooth motion, it backed into the shadows—and then the shadows moved wrong. Bones shifted with a wet, unnatural sound. Fur receded. The shape of the creature twisted and rose, taller and taller, until a boy stood where the wolf had been. No. Not a boy. Something else wearing the shape of one. He was barefoot, dirt smudged across pale skin, dark hair falling into his eyes. He looked around seventeen or eighteen—close enough to Lena’s age to make the moment even more unreal. His chest rose and fell rapidly, like he’d just run miles. They stared at each other. The world felt very quiet. “You weren’t supposed to see that,” he said finally. His voice was low and rough, like it hadn’t been used much. Not threatening—but not gentle either. Lena’s knees went weak. “You’re…” She swallowed. “You’re a wolf.” His jaw tightened. “Was.” “You turned into a wolf.” “Still am.” Her brain refused to catch up. This had to be a dream. Or shock. Or a stress-induced hallucination, which her aunt would definitely blame on “all that bottled-up grief.” “Okay,” Lena said faintly. “Okay. So. I’m either losing my mind, or you’re… real.” His eyes flicked over her face, sharp and assessing, like he was memorizing her. “You shouldn’t be here.” “I live here.” “In the forest.” “Near it,” she corrected automatically. “I walk here all the time.” “That’s why I know you,” he said. The words landed heavier than they should have. “You… know me?” He hesitated. The wolf—no, boy—looked conflicted, like every instinct in him was pulling in opposite directions. “I’ve seen you. On the path. Reading. Talking to yourself.” Lena flushed. “I don’t—” “You do,” he said. “When you’re sad.” Something twisted painfully in her chest. She hadn’t realized anyone could tell. “Why haven’t you hurt me?” she asked quietly. His eyes snapped back to hers, sharp with something like offense. “I wouldn’t.” “But wolves—” “I’m not that kind of monster.” Silence stretched between them, thick and dangerous. Finally, he stepped back. “You need to leave. Now. Before it gets dark.” “Why?” His gaze slid to the deepening shadows. “Because I’m not the only one out here.” A chill crawled up Lena’s spine. “Will I see you again?” The question slipped out before she could stop it. He looked surprised. Then… something softer flickered across his face. “Maybe,” he said. “If you survive tonight.” “That’s not reassuring.” A corner of his mouth twitched. “You shouldn’t be reassured.” He turned away, already retreating toward the trees. “Wait,” Lena called. “What’s your name?” He paused. “Kai,” he said without looking back. “Don’t follow me, Lena.” Her heart skipped. “How do you know my name?” But he was already gone—vanishing into the forest as silently as a shadow. Lena stood there long after he disappeared, the forest slowly exhaling around her. Somewhere deep in the trees, a wolf howled again. And this time, it sounded like a promise.
