"I'm sorry, I cannot be your mate", he said.
Kyra let out a deep sigh. She had already expected this.
"It's ok. I understand", Sara said, nodding her head.
He nodded at her, turned around, and left.
Sara turned around and walked into her house. She locked the door behind her and crumbled onto the floor. The tears threatened to gather in her eyes but she refused to let them fall. She should be used to this by now. This was her fifth mate and the second who had rejected her. The first three had died mysteriously just shortly after accepting her as their mate, and the man after that had decided he would not take the risk and had rejected her immediately, he noticed the mate bond between them. This was her fifth mate, and he had done the exact same thing and rejected her immediately after he noticed the mate pull. She couldn't blame them; she understood their fears, but that did not mean that it didn't hurt. Her parents were both dead, and she had no relatives; she was basically alone in this world, and without a mate, it seemed like she would be alone for the rest of her life. The thought stung her, but she knew it was the truth, and there was no use crying over it.
Sara picked herself off from the floor and took a deep breath. She headed to her room and lay on the bed with a sigh. Sara tossed and turned for a long time that night before she could fall asleep.
The next day, Sara woke up sluggishly, the rejection from the previous night still fresh in her mind. She forced it to the back of her mind and went about her morning routine. When Sara was done, she stood in front of the mirror and stared at her reflection for a long time, her eyes lost. She took a deep breath and walked out of the house.
As she stepped onto the streets, people avoided her. They began to talk in hushed tones and Sara knew they were talking about her. It was a normal occurrence in the pack and it was understandable. Her first three mates had died mysteriously, and her two mates after that had rejected her; there was a lot to talk about. She was treated like an outcast by most of the pack as nobody wanted to come near her.
Sara made her way to the market, eyes on the ground avoiding eye contact with everyone. Sara was planning to shop for groceries as her groceries were running low. She went to the first shop, and although the woman attended to her, Sara could not miss the difference in the way she attended to her as opposed to the way she attended to the other people there. The woman was cold and curt with her. When she got what she needed from the woman, Sara turned around to leave. As she walked away, she heard the women who were at the shop whispering,
"Did you hear? She was given another mate", one of the women whispered.
"Really? Ah, poor guy. Who was the unfortunate man the moon goddess thrust this hard burden on?", the second woman asked the first.
"I think it was Ken, the blacksmith's son", the first woman answered.
"Oh! Such a fine man? What a pity!", the second woman exclaimed.
"He rejected her", the first woman said.
"As he should", the second woman concurred.
"Can you imagine? Three of her fated mates dying mysteriously? She really must be cursed!", the first woman spat spitefully.
Sara stopped walking.
"Ssh. Look, she stopped. I think she can hear you", the second woman immediately warned the first one and they both went silent.
Sara took a deep breath and continued walking. There was no use going back to confront the women. It's not like they were the only ones whispering about her. She did wonder how they heard about Ken. He had been very quiet about her being his mate. He didn't want anyone to know so he even came in the evening to reject her when no one would see him. But then again, was there anything that was truly hidden under the sun, especially when it concerned her? It was truly only a matter of time. Sara navigated the rest of the market in somewhat of a trance, hearing the whispers that followed in her wake, but paying no attention to them.
As she walked past a shop, a shoe on display caught her eye. Sara stopped and turned to look at the shoe. Sara wasn't the type of woman who was really moved by things like this, but this particular pair of shoes was so pretty that Sara first wondered why they hadn't been sold yet.
Sara walked into the shop and picked up the shoes. The shop attendant who saw someone showing interest in the shoes hurried over but stopped suddenly when she saw it was Sara. She walked slowly towards her.
"Are you interested in this pair, ma'am?", the attendant asked her.
"Yes, I am", Kgria answered as she smiled at the attendant.
"Have they been sold yet?", Sara asked her.
"No ma'am", she answered.
Sara smiled at the shoes.
"Those are mine", a voice suddenly said.
Sara and the attendant turned to see a plump woman marching towards them.
"Good morning, ma'am", the attendant greeted her.
The woman simply nodded at the attendant before regarding Sara with a look of contempt.
"You can't take that pair", the woman said sharply.
"Why not?", Sara asked her.
"Because I'm going to take them", the woman answered.
"I don't understand", Sara said.
The woman scoffed.
"It's really very simple. I saw the pair first so I should get them", the woman spat out condescendingly.
"But I picked them up first", Sara stated.
"And the attendant says they haven't been bought yet", she added.
"Well then the attendant must have made a mistake as I was just going to pay for them"
"But you haven't paid for them yet", Sara pointed out.
"So they aren't yours", Sara added.
Sara did not know this woman, but she had a very pompous air about her, and Sara did not like how she was looking at her condescendingly. Sara did not know why she was exchanging words with this woman; normally, she would have just dropped the shoes and walked out to avoid trouble. Maybe it was the rejection from yesterday that was still fresh in her mind or the women who were whispering about her this morning, but Sara felt all her frustration panting up and ready to let loose.
"I can't believe this", the woman scoffed.
"You!", the woman said as she looked at Sara spitefully.
"Is it that you are deaf or something? I said you can't take this pair, they are mine", she spat.
"But you haven't paid for them, so they aren't yours, and I picked them up first,” Sara replied.
"Ma'am, I suggest you calm down; you are creating a scene,” the sales attendant said.
The woman turned around to see that people were indeed beginning to pay attention to them. Just then the store manager walked in.
"What is going on here?", he asked.
The sales attendant narrated everything that happened. The manager knew Sara was in the right but he was afraid to admit it because he recognized the plump woman as one of his regulars. But there were also a lot of people around and he didn't want to seem impartial.
"Ma'am", the store manager addressed the plump lady.
"There is no need to argue. We have other better shoes available, would you like to see them?", he suggested.
The plump woman knew she was in the wrong, and she knew the manager saw that too, but she was just scared of losing a regular.
"But I really wanted this pair!", she insisted.
"Ma'am we have better ones", the store manager said with a smile.
The plump woman looked around at the curious eyes that were staring at them. She felt ashamed to lose to this tramp but she knew if the matter dragged on, the tables might turn against her.
"Maybe I should see them", she finally agreed.
The manager smiled.
"I shouldn't be arguing with cursed little tramps anyway, so I don't end up dead", the woman spat spitefully.
Sara's blood ran cold.
All the eyes in the room suddenly seemed to have taken a different expression and they were all staring at her. They knew who she was. They were all probably saying the same thing in their minds, that she was cursed. Sara suddenly felt claustrophobic. She dropped the shoes and ran out of the store. She ran away from the market and headed straight into the forest, tears clouding her vision. She didn't stop running until she had run deep into the forest. She stopped and began to pant while crying heavily.
After a few minutes, Sara had slowly begun to calm down when she heard a snap.
