-Rose POV-
I just wanted to get away so I wouldn’t have to think about everything but it is impossible to not think about my situation when Helix is right next to me, watching me.
I get up, walk up to Nova, take her by the hand, and pull her with me towards the woods, trying to get a bit of privacy but it is impossible since the place is full of people.
“What is it?” She asks.
“I needed a break from your brother.”
“Is he bothering you?”
“No. It’s just hard being near him.” I say.
“Why?” Helix suddenly asks from behind me.
I am startled and quickly turn around.
“Uh...Oh...” I sigh. “You know why? Don’t act dumb.” I say.
He smiles and then looks at Nova.
“Go away. Rose and I need to talk.”
Nova’s face scrunches in annoyance. “So rude.”
Helix sticks his tongue out at her and so does she to him.
I nervously lean against a tree.
When Nova is out of sight, he looks at me and now gives me a mischievous smile as he slowly approaches.
My nerves now spike and I try to move away but he boxes me in with his hands on each side of me.
“Y... you said talk.” I say.
“I lied.” He whispers.
He is acting so different than he is used to. And there is also this change of aura with him.
He slowly leans in. My eyes slowly close and I wait to feel his lips but they never come. I look in between my lashes to see him hover his lips over mine also with half-closed eyes. All I can feel is his warm breath against my lips.
“What are you doing Helix?” I whisper.
“Just let me have this.” He says. “I can’t kiss you but I can be this close. I can imagine that I am kissing you.”
My lips quiver and I am tempted to close the distance between us.
His hand suddenly cups my face and he gets even closer. I can feel the tip of his lip graze me as his nose touches mine. This is torture.
I bite my lip and look away because I know I can’t resist him anymore.
He looks down disappointed and tries to calm himself.
“It’s best if we go back to the others.” I whisper.
He nods. “Yeah.”
We both walk back and sit in the same spots as before.
The party continues but not once am I really able to enjoy it because all I want is Helix and all I can think about is him. I think that having him here all to myself is going to my head.
Around two in the morning, the music is over and everyone starts to wind down. Tired, I head to my tent where I quickly lie down with the intention of sleeping immediately so that I don’t have to think about him. But his voice suddenly comes very close to me.
“Rose.”
I look around ready to see him in here with me but he is not there.
“What? Where are you?”
He chuckles. “Here, next to you.”
He says and suddenly, I see the silhouette of his hand on the wall of the tent next to me from the outside.
“What are you doing?”
“I wanted to sleep next to you, and like this, we have a barrier between us.”
“So, you are going to sleep out there next to me?”
“Yep.”
(This... should be okay.)
I giggle and get comfortable, getting close to the fabric wall of the tent where I can hear him do the same.
I look at the fabric with a smile as I imagine him there.
“Are you comfortable?” I ask him.
“Yeah. I have a sleeping bag that Nova gave me which by the way I am surprised that she did something nice for me.”
I laugh. “Don’t get too comfortable. Nova probably has an ulterior motive.”
He laughs. “Yeah. I’m sleeping with one eye open.”
I see his hand pressed against the fabric of the tent. I lift my hand up and mirror it, touching his hand through the fabric.
“This is hard, Helix.” I say.
“I know. I’m sorry for all of it.” His voice is soft and genuine.
“Don’t be.” I say. “It’s not your fault. None of us knew that this is what was going to happen.”
“I don’t even get why this happened to us.” He says.
“Yeah. It’s such bullshit.”
We suddenly get into a comfortable silence. I close my eyes and start to drift off.
“Good night, Rose.” Helix whispers.
“Good night.” I whisper back.
There might be a soft wall between us but I do feel like I am with him and it feels right. Perfect.
My dreams are invaded by him. He is all I can think about.
The next day, early morning I wake up with Helix cursing.
I sit up and rub my eyes. “What’s wrong?” I ask.
“Nova. She thinks that a snake is going to scare me. She played the wrong hand here.
“A... snake! What?!”
“I’m pretty sure she put a snake in my sleeping bag earlier... this is going to backfire on her.”
I gasp and quickly come out of the tent to see Helix holding a snake in his hand.
I gasp and back up.
He walks towards Nova. She sees him and starts laughing not noticing what he is holding.
“How did you wake up?” She asks.
“Great. How did you?” He says and throws the snake at her hair.
“AAAHHH!” She screams and starts running trying to get the snake off of her hair.”
She hits her head multiple times until the snake falls off and quickly sliders away.
Nova’s eyes flare in the direction of Helix.
“I HATE YOU!” She runs and jumps but in midair, Dominic grabs her and holds her in a hug.
“You started it!” Helix shouts, backing away.
“d**k!!” She shouts, being dragged away.
I shake my head. “You two need to stop.”
“Someday... maybe.” He says.
After Nova calms down, we put everything away in the car and get in. Dominic is about to start driving but he suddenly stops the car.
“Wait a minute.” He says.
He gets out and heads to the trunk where he opens it to find Dylan already there.
“How does he do that?” I am so confused.
Nova and Helix laugh.
Dominic drags him by his shirt, opens Helix’s passenger door, and shoves him in with us.
“You ride like a normal person.” Dominic mumbles at him.
"Oh, thank the goddess. Three to four hours in the trunk is too much. My back can't take any more of it."
We all laugh.
When Dominic starts driving, we all settle down. Nova is so pissed at Helix because of what happened with the snake that she doesn't even look at her. So, the ride is a bit quieter than usual.
Helix sits next to me in between Dylan and me. My eyes are drawn to his arms. His biceps are getting big and it's probably because of his training with Dominic. I swear he is looking bigger every day.
When we are only fifteen minutes away from the packhouse, Dominic has to slow down because it starts to rain heavily. The sky is dark, there is thunder and trees sway violently.
Dominic looks up at the sky. "I knew there was a storm coming but I didn't think it was going to be this bad."
I close my eyes and listen to the sounds around us. I don't know why but I have always liked stormy weather. I can hear the rain hitting the car, the windshield whippers going from one side to the other I wish I could run in the rain right now in my wolf form.
I suddenly feel Helix's hand on mine. I open my eyes and find him looking at me. He smiles and I smile back. That sweet moment is short-lived when our car is suddenly screeching and struggling to stop. As Dominic steps on the breaks, I look in front of us where a small group of wolves stands in the middle of the road. Dominic loses control and the car swerves, plunging us into the side of the road where we hit a tree straight on.
