Chapter 1
"Look at you, Peggy," Calista said, her eyes scanning Peggy from head to toe. "Five years of playing the obedient maid, and you still look like you belong in the kitchen.”
Peggy’s fist tightened against her gown as she listened to Calista’s words. There was a bitter look on her face as she responded, "You told me you wanted to apologize for everything. That is the only reason I came out here to see you."
A few minutes ago, Calista had indeed sent a maid to Peggy’s room, claiming she wanted to apologise for everything she had done. Turns out she only wanted to taunt her.
Peggy realised Calista just enjoyed making a fool of her.
Calista laughed; a sharp, cruel laugh, as she said. "Apologize to you? I think you must be forgetting that Lucien’s life now revolves around me. He always belonged to me right from the very start, so there is nothing to apologize for."
"Stop it, Calista."
"But it's the truth," Calista said, stepping closer to Peggy, making it almost impossible not to inhale her expensive perfume.
"This family never wanted you. His father hates you, his mother hates you, and now, even your dear husband hates you. Now that I am carrying the next Devereux heir, you are completely useless to them."
What?
Calista was pregnant? Was it for her husband, Lucian?
Peggy felt a sharp ache in her chest. She did not want to believe that Lucien would betray her and sleep with his ex-girlfriend.
But she herself wasn't so sure anymore. Everything had been fine between her and Lucian until Calista returned from abroad three years ago.
That was when she had lost her child due to a miscarriage that Calista had caused, except Lucien did not believe her.
He claimed his childhood best friend and ex would never harm his child.
That miscarriage had caused a strain in their bond as husband and wife.
Peggy stayed silent, refusing to give Calista the satisfaction of arguing with her. Once Lucien returns from work, she would ask him herself. Lucian might have been mean to her these past few years, but he would never betray her.
“Here's the thing, Peggy, the Devereux loved me since I was a child,” Calista said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "So even if I told them you tried to kill my baby... they'd believe me."
Peggy’s breath hitched. She looked at Calista’s flat stomach and felt a wave of pure sickness.
"You are insane."
"More than you think," Calista affirmed Peggy's words, her lips curling into a fake smile. "Just know that I would do anything to make sure Lucien is mine."
"I am leaving," Peggy said instead.
She believed Calista was just saying those words to rile her up. There was no way Lucien would sleep with Calista while she was still married to him.
She turned around, desperate to get away from the suffocating smell of Calista’s heavy perfume.
"We aren't finished!" Calista snapped at Peggy, who was no longer giving her attention.
She lunged forward and grabbed Peggy’s wrist and dug her pedicured nails hard into Peggy's skin.
"Let go of me!" Peggy yanked her arm back, trying to break free from Calista’s grip.
But Calista didn't fight back. Instead, she leaned into the momentum, letting her feet slip on the smooth stone.
Calista threw herself backward.
Her body crashed violently against a heavy wooden table, snapping one of its legs in the process. A ceramic pot shattered into pieces as Calista hit the hard marble floor on her side, curling up instantly.
"My baby!" Calista screamed, her voice piercing the quiet room. "My baby! Help! She pushed me!”
The heavy glass doors of the conservatory burst open.
Evangeline, Lucien’s mother, rushed in first.
Alistair, Lucien’s father was right behind her, followed by three maids and Calista’s bodyguard, Sylvain.
"Calista!" Evangeline cried, dropping to her knees beside the shattered wooden table. "Oh my god, Calista!"
"My baby, Evangeline... my stomach hurts so much," Calista sobbed, clutching her side. She looked up, her eyes wide with fake terror, and pointed a shaking finger at Peggy. "She did it. She pushed me. She said if she couldn't have a baby, I shouldn't have one either!"
Peggy froze instantly at Calista's lie "No! That’s not true! She fell by herself."
"Shut up!" Evangeline screamed, clearly not ready to believe her.
Slap!
Peggy’s head snapped to the side as Evangeline's hands landed on her cheek. Her cheek burned with a sharp, stinging pain. She stumbled back, clutching her face, tears instantly blurring her vision.
"You jealous, evil creature!" Evangeline shouted, her voice shaking with rage. "You lost your own child because you're weak, and now you try to murder my grandchild?"
“Grandchild?”
Peggy stared at Evangeline in shock. Was Calista truly pregnant for Lucien?
Lucien walked in before Peggy could say a word. He stood there frozen, looking at Calista crying on the floor and then at Peggy who was still holding her cheek.
"Lucien!" Peggy ran toward him, reaching for his arms. "Lucien, is Calista really pregnant for you?”
Lucien looked down at her hands on his jacket, then looked over at Calista, who was whimpering loudly. He pulled his arms out of Peggy's grip.
"Calista is seven weeks pregnant. Are you trying to kill my child?”
"Yes, She wanted to kill our baby because she is jealous of me!" Calista spoke up while Peggy was still trying to soak in Lucien’s words.
Calista was seven weeks pregnant?
With Lucien’s child?
"Sylvain!" Alistair’s deep voice resounded in the room. "You are Calista’s bodyguard. What did you see?"
Sylvain stepped forward, keeping his face completely expressionless. "I was walking toward the conservatory to bring Ms. Laurent her sweater. Through the glass, I saw Mrs. Devereux grab Ms. Laurent and shove her into the table. It happened too fast for me to stop it."
"You liar!" Peggy screamed, turning on the bodyguard. He wasn't even in the room when Calista fell, so how could he have seen her push Calista.
"That is enough!" Alistair snapped. "Call the ambulance now! Lucien, take Calista to the hospital."
"You better pray nothing happens to my child" Lucien said coldly to Peggy as he walked towards Calista to help her up.
Calista buried her face into Lucien's chest, groaning in pain, but as Lucien turned to carry her out, Calista's eyes peeked over his shoulder.
For a fraction of a second, the pain vanished from her face. She looked directly at Peggy and flashed a tiny, victorious smile.
Peggy realised, once again, that Calista had just made a fool of her.
"Move! Out of the way!" Evangeline yelled, pushing Peggy roughly out of the corridor as they all rushed out of the conservatory. "If anything happens to my grandchild, I will make sure you rot in jail!"
Within a minute, the conservatory was empty.
Peggy sank to her knees on the cold marble floor. She looked at the broken ceramic pot, the shattered table leg, and the empty space where her husband had just stood and abandoned her.
She covered her face with her hands and sobbed silently.
