Amelia
It’s been three days since I last saw Liam.
The days in this house without his presence haven’t changed much, but I can feel the cold atmosphere growing stronger.
“Just wait, the real Madam will show up.”
I pretended not to hear the conversation of the maids around us. I tried to focus all my attention only on Julian.
He was happily playing with his toy cars in his own way. Then, with his loud voice and adorable laughter, he clapped his hands.
I just didn’t want to stop his happiness right now, even though the maids’ chatter grew louder afterward.
“I heard that everyone’s busy preparing to welcome her. So why is she still here?”
“Don’t you know? She thinks she can win over Sir Liam. But the truth is, no one has ever loved her because she’s a wicked woman.”
Their mocking laughter pierced me on purpose, and it hurt so deeply. The pain made me feel as though I stopped breathing for a moment. I couldn’t move from where I stood, Julian pulled my hand and pointed at the toy car near me.
“This one.”
I handed it to him with a gentle voice.
There was nothing wrong with Julian; he didn’t deserve to be treated so cruelly. He was such a pure soul, one who should be protected and given happiness.
But I knew that if he kept staying here, it wouldn’t be good for him either. No one accepted him, and I felt he would soon be broken even more if things were left as they were.
After I met Sean, he gave me a well-known lawyer to help me with the divorce. Today, someone was supposed to send me the documents.
That was why I had been feeling uneasy, I didn’t want anyone else to be the one to receive those papers.
“She could never compare herself to Miss Sophia.”
“Eh, even just thinking that way is already so strange.”
Enough of this nonsense. I picked Julian up into my arms and looked straight at them. They stared back at me with arrogant eyes, probably because they didn’t expect me to dare to walk up to them.
I looked them over from head to toe. They weren’t special servants, nor favorites of this household. They just wanted to find someone weaker to ridicule so they could satisfy themselves.
But… is it really necessary to hurt others?
“You should keep your mouths shut.”
Unconsciously, one of them touched her lips. And with that, I walked away, ignoring all that nonsense.
Because the truth was, I knew very well that soon this house would belong to Sophia Haigh. I always remembered Liam’s demeanor.
That time, when he looked at the garden with a faint smile on his face, I realized that this garden had been specially designed and completed for Sophia. Even the bedroom, it was the one he had prepared for her to share with him.
That’s right. Liam and I had never shared the same room. He would never want to. He found me repulsive.
As I walked toward Julian’s room, I heard the sound of the doorbell. I quickly headed over, and a man dressed in black was standing at the door.
“Is Mrs. Amelia here?”
“That’s me.”
I immediately reached out my hand, already knowing what he meant. Just as I expected—it was the documents I had been waiting for.
I quickly stepped back inside, intending to check them in my room, but before I could take another step, the doorbell rang again. I opened the door at once.
“Is there something else?”
For heaven’s sake, at that moment I froze completely, because what I saw was Liam. I hadn’t expected it at all, and the man, with his characteristically cold expression, looked straight at me.
“Who are you waiting for?”
His question startled me, and it instantly made me uneasy. I tried to respond as usual, while holding Julian in my arms and clutching the documents.
I would give them to him later, after I was sure everything was in order. But right now, I was terrified that he might see these papers.
Because all this time, he had treated me so poorly, I was afraid he might do something in front of Julian.
“The delivery man.”
He didn’t answer, but from the way his eyes shifted, I knew he was scrutinizing me. I would have been utterly shocked if he had snatched the papers from me and caused a scene.
“Oh. Step aside now.”
My body moved out of the way just as he ordered. He passed by me without even glancing at Julian.
At that time, although I was relieved he hadn’t taken the papers from my hand, I felt a pang of disappointment at his coldness.
Inside the room, I quickly opened the documents and began reading them carefully. Everything written here was in perfect order, and with this, I was certain I could finally live well.
Just Julian and me—we could do so many things together. Thinking about it, I realized how wonderful our life would be.
I had already imagined taking Julian to different places, just as I had once hoped. I knew it might be difficult at first, but eventually, everything would pass.
I immediately picked up my phone and called Sean. An old friend I had only recently met again, yet who offered his help, he was truly kind.
I mean, his attitude had never changed since the past.
“Amel, what is it?”
Hearing his voice made me feel happy.
“Sean, I just received the documents. I’ll sign them soon and then ask him to sign as well.”
“Are you sure he’ll agree to sign them, Amel?”
He still couldn’t believe that my husband and I were going to divorce. Several times he asked about my decision, perhaps because he knew how much I had once wanted to be with Liam.
If he stayed here and saw how they treated me, surely he would understand what I felt.
“I’m certain he’ll sign it right away, Sean.”
I smiled through the sting in my chest.
Everyone knew that man despised me. The only one he ever cared for was Sophia Haigh.
I was nothing but a burden in his life, and with pleasure, he would sign without hesitation. He would be free, and that would be best for him, because Sophia would return. They would soon marry.
And I was sure that after that, the two of them would be happy.
So, I found no reason at all for Liam to refuse.
After a while of talking, the call finally ended. I exhaled, raising the papers high and gazing at them.
“What’s that?” Suddenly, that voice made my body tremble.
I looked up at him, eyes wide, as he stepped forward swiftly and snatched the documents from my hands.
My God… he had never entered this room before. Why did he choose today to come in?
