Chapter 5

1247 Words
Sean Meeting her was something completely unexpected. All this time, I tried so hard not to think about her because of that sudden marriage. I could rarely sleep peacefully, weighed down by such deep disappointment. I went abroad after she left campus. My family and friends gave me many projects, and I accepted them. Through all those actions, I earned the name the entertainment monster. I thought it would work, I thought I’d have no problem at all moving on from my first love. But the moment I saw her, my heart was instantly flooded with memories of my love for her. I missed her, I cared for her, I was happy to meet her again. How is she? How has life treated her? There were so many things I truly wanted to say, but couldn’t. Still, I could tell her marriage didn’t seem all that happy. Even so, I forced myself not to interfere with her life, unless she were to ask me for help. The moment I saw her child for the first time. Amelia Haigh’s married life had always been so secretive that I often wondered intensely about who her husband might be. We had arranged to meet, and I was happy about that. Without realizing it, I kept glancing at the mirror over and over, making sure I looked my absolute best. I thought, at the very least, I had to leave a good impression. My expression stiffened a little when I realized it seemed like I wanted to catch Amelia’s attention. I often asked myself, why isn’t she like other women? Whenever they saw me, they would instantly like me, trying to get my attention. Their seductive behavior, swaying their hips, it was disgusting. But if it was Amelia… she would be truly beautiful. I really needed to clear my head for now. That was why I took my time preparing, sitting in the car, regulating my breath again and again. Until finally, I contacted Amelia and found out she was at the hospital. Honestly, that worried me. I was afraid something might have happened to her, so I rushed there. As she entered the car, I had been watching her for a while and noticed how pale her face looked. Before I could say anything, she spoke first, something that completely caught me off guard. “Help me divorce my husband.” I almost jumped when I heard her words, yet deep inside, I was actually glad to hear them. It was so unexpected, but the more I looked at her, the more I realized just how suffocated she truly was in her marriage. A moment later, I made sure we talked in a more comfortable place, somewhere she could feel freer to speak. I didn’t want anything bad to happen to her. Besides, I wanted to know more about her. In a VIP room at a restaurant, I looked at her. A glass of chilled drink sat before us as she took a deep breath. “My marriage happened because I was forced into it, Sean.” Her voice trembled as she said it, and it cut me deeply. Back then, when her marriage was about to happen, she had spoken to me with a smile. She told me she had loved that man since she was a child. Even though I was heartbroken, I truly wished her marriage would be a happy one. She deserved happiness. But now… something had changed. “Tell me, so I can help you, Amel.” Her hands, clasped together, looked restless. That made me struggle hard not to be impolite, by reaching out to hold her hand and telling her I was by her side. Maybe even pulling her into a strong embrace, but I kept holding myself back. “I’m nothing more than a substitute bride, Sean. And now that my husband’s true lover has regained consciousness, that’s why I want a divorce.” Not only that, the more she explained, the more shocked I became by her words. I never imagined it would be so dark. I hadn’t realized that all this time she had been forcing herself to stay strong just to endure it all. How could they treat such a kind-hearted woman so cruelly? Right then and there, I wanted to curse them for what they had done. My blood truly boiled. “I’ll help you find the best lawyer. Don’t worry, Amel. You have me.” Even forcing a fake smile in front of her was unbearably difficult. Amelia looked calmer than before as she sipped her drink. It was a shame she still wasn’t willing to say who that bastard of a man was who had done this to her. So ungrateful, and I was certain that one day he would deeply regret losing Amelia. Ah! That f*****g man, he wasn’t my concern. Because this time, I was going to make Amelia mine. The only one who could make her truly happy was me. “Since she’s regained consciousness, you don’t need to give your blood anymore. As much as possible, prepare yourself to leave that place soon, Amel.” Her eyes lit up after hearing what I said. I was sure she still held onto some hope that man would care for her, but because she was so tired and so concerned about Julian’s feelings, her heart had been shattered over and over again. I didn’t push her. I simply watched until she finally nodded softly. For a while, we spent time there, and afterward, I drove her home. The atmosphere of the house looked so dark—just as Amelia had said, like she was truly being neglected. Without realizing it, I held her arm as she was about to step out. “Amelia, if you need anything, call me right away.” I couldn’t stop the explosion of emotions rising inside me. The terrible thoughts I had, those things could truly happen. “Thank you, Sean.” She stepped out with a smile. We parted ways after I made sure she had gone inside safely, seeing some of the lights in the house turn on. I went home with an utterly heavy heart. When I arrived at my penthouse, I did nothing but lie on the sofa, staring at the glowing ceiling. I stayed there for quite a while, lost in thought, until I finally called someone. “James, find me a good divorce lawyer.” “What!?” he shouted so loudly that I instinctively pulled the phone away from my ear. “You secretly got married!?” I let out a long breath. It was truly exhausting to keep explaining, especially with the emotions that weighed so deeply on me. “Just do it.” I ended the call and went back to simply staring at the ceiling. I honestly wished she could find happiness, and as for Julian… surely he was suffering under such a terrible father. I wouldn’t mind at all if he became my child. Yeah, I would definitely take care of him well, love him, protect him. We’d play together, and those would be such joyful days. Julian just hadn’t found the right way to cope with his situation yet, because so many things kept him bound to them. And this decision finally led me to seek out the truth about that bastard of a man, because I had to make sure victory would be in my hands.
