  Gaven   I'm already waiting when the door opens.   I've positioned myself in the corridor outside Maelis's exam room under the pretense of routine oversight, but we both know that's a lie. I've been here since Fern went in. Long enough that two guards have rotated past me and pretended not to notice. But I noticed when they smirked at one another at my expense.   I wanted to berate them then and there, but I let them go, mostly because the sound of the door handle turning catches my attention.   When it swings open, Maelis steps out first. I peek in the door for only a moment to see Fern sitting on the table. She looks scared and confused. There is a bottle clutched firmly in her hands, but I turn away from the room.   I can't be what she needs me to be right now. That job is better
