  Fern   Maelis's office smells clean. I have been at the Blackmoor Pack for about a week, and she approached me during breakfast and told me that I needed another check-up. She left no room for argument, and when I looked at Mara for help, she wouldn't meet my gaze.   Her office is much different from the healers' offices in the Vale Pack. It is not filled with herbs and smoke. There are no dried roots hanging from the beams, and no stained wooden tables. This room is bright and clinical. The Blackmoor Pack would be nothing less than efficient and modern.   I sit on the edge of the exam table with my hands folded in my lap, and my feet swinging slightly because they don't quite reach the floor.
