ISABEL'S POV. The phone rang and rang, the sound becoming a deafening echo in my ears as panic filled me from head to toe. I clutched the phone tighter, desperately willing Leo to pick up, to answer, to somehow make all of this go away. But after what felt like an eternity, the call went to voicemail. My heart sank, and my trembling fingers almost dropped the phone, but I scrambled to regain my hold on it. “He_ he’s not answering,” I whispered, my voice barely audible, even to myself. "I'm sorry, but he's not answering. I can't get a hold of him." The scarred man’s one good eye narrowed, his face twisting into a scowl. “What did you just say?” he growled, stepping closer to me. His presence making me feel like the room was closing in on me, and I suddenly felt like I was suffocating.
