CHAPTER TEN: I Am Not A Dog Pound For Annoying Lost Puppies I am not illiterate. I know what these four words mean. And as far as I could remember, he’s the only one whom I ever got close with. He’s the only guy I’ve talked to. And it’s quite obvious that the ‘him’ in this letter is that guy whose eyes are darker than midnight and has brown disheveled hair. But why would someone want me to stay away from him? Yes, Errine told me to stay away from him, before. But now, he’s just too adorable to be pushed away. He’s of extreme help to me just now and I’ll be forever thankful about that. Why would I stay away from him? “Heavs?” I heard Errine’s voice accompanied by the sound of the door opening. I automatically hid the paper behind me. “What are you still doing outside? It’s dangerous out there.” she chimed. “I-I was just catching a little air. I was about to get inside.” I reasoned out before walking inside the house. “What’s that smell?” Errine asked while sniffing like a canine dog. “What smell?” I asked in complete confusion. She didn’t answer. Instead, she sniffed her bandaged finger which I find quite a gross act. “Not my blood. Something smells like blood.” she said. Then it struck me. It’s possible, right? That the red ink in this letter was blood. And when the realization took place, I dropped the paper. “What’s that?” Errine asked. I hurriedly picked up the paper. “N-Nothing.” I said stammering. “Oh really? You’re really a terrible liar, and you know that, don’t you?” she said while her hands are crossed over her shoulder and she’s c*****g her head to the side. “It’s nothing. Really.” She eyed me before sprinting towards my back and surprisingly took the paper from my hand. And I can’t do otherwise so I let her open the paper. “Stay away from him...” she read out loud. “What’s this?” she asked. “I don’t know, Rine. When I accompanied Kohell, on my way inside the house, I saw that paper. I took it. And I saw the same thing you saw. Those four words, which I know what the meaning is.” I explained. “Stay away from Hell, am I right?” she figured. I just nodded. “But why? Why would anyone want you to stay away from him? I know for sure that even though Hell’s as intimidating as he is, great number from the female population drools over him. But I haven’t heard someone who received such warning on a...” she sniffed it. “Oh my God! Is this blood? Is this what I smelled?” she exclaimed. “Maybe.” I answered in complete discomfort. The thought of blood as ink for this note just gives me the fright of my life. Who in their right minds would leave a note written with blood? “Is this some kind of a joke?” Errine said in disgust as she pinched the paper and threw it on the waste bin. “A sick joke at that.” I said as I took a seat on the couch. I lifted my hands on my head and combed it through my hair. My problems kept on piling up. Stacks and stacks of problems kept on popping out. I don’t know which one to deal with first. I don’t even know how to deal with the least problem I have. Which is being Kohell’s play buddy. And when I say play buddy, we’re playing a game of ‘Who-Can-Annoy-The-Best’. And he received himself a few points already. Dammit. When God poured down problems, I went out and caught them all with a happy face and an upbeat music. I was distracted from my lingering when my phone buzzed from my jean’s pocket. I took it and was surprised to see Mom’s name on the screen. “Hey, Mom. What’s up?” I faked delight. She’s a very meticulous person. If she hears my voice’s a little off, she’ll know I’m in trouble. “Oh God. It’s so good to hear your voice, honey. Why haven’t you called us yet? Your dad and I was so worried. You were there for a week already and we haven’t heard anything from you” she blabbered. Yes, my Mom’s quite loud too. I squeezed my eyes shut and opened it. Combed my hair before answering, “I was quite busy, Mom. I had a lot of catching up to do. I do not even have the time to entertain text messages. But I was about to call you after dinner. And tell you, I earned myself a spot at the cheering squad.” Then again, I faked delight. Jeez! “Wow, that’s good, honey. I always thought you had the calling for dancing and―” “Mom, cheering’s not really dancing. For me, dancing’s with grace and whatever. It’s just...” “Fine. But we’re proud of you, Honey. Just know that we’re always here for you, no matter how far the distance we have between us. Okay?” “Okay, Mom. Don’t you have work now?” I asked. It’s quite unusual that they’d call me on weekdays. They usually do that on weekends. “We’re on a break, sweetie. We took the mid-shift. Oh I’m truly sorry, sweetie, but I have to go.” she answered. “Ohh okay. You guys enjoy your break. I miss you. Hope to see you soon.” “Okay, you take care, honey. We love you.” “I love you too.” then I hung up. I let out an exasperated sigh. I was able to pull it off, the act of delight to my Mom. I turned to face Errine who’s on the other end of the sofa, blowing air on her bandaged finger. “What are you doing?” I asked her. “What?” she shrugged. “Why are you blowing air on that?” I asked as I threw my phone on the space on the sofa. “No particular reason. I just want to” she answered then blew again. “You’re really weird, and you know that, don’t you?” I said with a raised brow. “Definitely. But you see, it takes a weird to know a weird.” she snickered. I eyed her. “I’m nowhere near weird. Want me to pinch that cut of yours?” I warned. “No please.” she said as she covered her finger with her other hand. “Tss.” “Now let’s talk about the blood.” she said as she spun to face me in an Indian sit position. “If you’ll tell me that the bloody note, the whispers, the dream and the bite was inter―” “What bite?” she interrupted. I froze and bit my lower lip. I was not supposed to tell her that thing. I wasn’t even that sure if what I think is possible. I looked at her and was trying to weigh in the odds of telling her that incident. But this is it, I already served her the appetizer, which means, the sequence can’t be distracted. I have to tell her. “What bite, Heaven?” she said attentively while moving closer to me. I huffed. “There was a bite... On the day I was found unconscious, I felt a sting on my neck. Like there’s twin needles piercing through my Carotid Artery. And then pitch black.” I explained downheartedly. There’s a heavy part inside me that felt even heavier the moment I told her that incident. “Oh my God!” she gaped. “I was assuming that...” I paused. “That what?” “I know this may sound weird―” “Takes a weird to know a weird.” she said while crossing her hands over her chest and posing a look like she said something really worth-praising. I rolled my eyes heavenwards. “As I was saying, I assume that we have a supernatural creature inside the school premises.” I stated. “Supernaturals? Like ghosts?” “More harmful than ghosts. Ghosts aren’t really harmful at all. These supernatural creatures I’m talking about possesses deadly traits. I wasn’t really that sure if this assumption’s right. I have read things about these creatures but there are only a few or let’s say, there’s just a minimal possibility that it’s true.” I explained. “Okay, I’m confused.” she said while tilting her head to the side. “What I was sayin’ is, there’s darkness in this school, Errine. There’s something supernatural going on in here. The basic evidence right now is Selene.” “And you” she added. “Yes, and me. What I suggest now is, we have to take precautions and we can’t let this leak between us. This is dangerous. It has grown more dangerous. Promise me, you won’t tell anyone” “I promise.” she said as she raised her right hand as a sign of taking an oath. I sighed heavily. I’m a stockroom of problems and trouble. *** “Mind if I sit here?” a voice stood out from the noise that’s clearly polluting the atmosphere here inside the cafeteria. I’m currently havin’ a quick snack since I haven’t eaten breakfast earlier. I stayed up late last night, thinking of ways to cope with my current situation. I decided to just live the day like it’s meant to be ordinary. Nothing’s ordinary on Heaven Wessler’s life. It’s always painted with unorthodox instances. Like for example, right now. The chair opposite to mine’s been moved backwards and a blonde-haired guy sat after he settled his tray of goodies in front of him. Not at all. You even sat before I allowed you to. “Why are you alone?” he asked after he opened his can of coke. “Errine still has her class.” I answered while stabbing the mousse cake with a fork. “You. Why are you here? Don’t you have your class?” I asked while shooting him a knowing look. “Well, the teacher’s not around so I thought of eating out. I was surprised to see you here all alone. It’s like you always enjoy solitude.” he chirped. “Yeah right. Solitude. Guess I don’t have that now.” I said in sarcasm. “Oh I’m sorry to have interrupted your moment of solidarity, Miss Modest.” he said chuckling. “Yeah, right Skye.” I deadpanned. “So how are you?” he asked. “Never better.” I answered while still stabbing the poor cake. If things are as harmless as this cake, I’d be thankful for the opportunity to cast the depression I have on this poor sweet-chocolaty goodness. “If that cake can speak―” “It can’t. It’s already dead.” I said after stabbing the cake one last time. “Put it out of its misery and just eat it.” he chuckled. “Can’t. Lost the appetite to eat.” I said lazily. “Fine. By the way, where’s Hell?” he asked. “I am not a dog pound for annoying lost puppies. I don’t know where he is. He left right after class.” I answered. “Oh I See. That’s Hell for you. One second he’s here, the next, he’s not.” “Yeah, someone said the same thing, too.” I said. “Who?” he asked. “Nevermind. I have to go. Got a class in 10 minutes. Enjoy your food.” I bid goodbye. While on the way at the intersection, I almost bumped into someone. “Oh, Heather it’s you. How are you?” Kelly chimed. Her voice’s so angelic. “I’m good.” I answered. “So can you come to the practice later?” she asked. “Yeah. Yeah, of course.” I answered. “Sweet. See you later.” she gave me a very beautiful smile. “Okay, See you.” I smiled back. “Oh, by the way, your necklace’s lovely. Toodles.” she waved her hand and headed on. I walked to my next class. *** Kill me now! And I really mean it! Can anyone just kill me now? Before I fall to the ground in complete uneasiness. Jeez! Why haven’t they told me? Oh my God! I regret ever joining the squad! WE ARE HAVING OUR PRACTICE IN AN OPEN FIELD! WORST, KOHELL’S BEEN FIXATED ON ME FOR QUITE SOME TIME! “Heather, are you okay? Are the steps too hard? I can teach you.” Kelly said while walking towards me. “No. No it’s not. Please continue.” I answered. “Okay, let’s pick it up from the top.” Kelly said out loud. “Pick it up, girl.” Errine said. She’s beside me. I just nodded. I shot dark glares at Kohell who’s currently snickering like a crazy hyena on the bleachers. If I had a stone in here, I’ll gladly throw it at him without missing. He’s currently wearing the same jersey. By the looks of his messy hair and a part of his jersey that’s darker in color which seems wet of sweat, it’s like they just finished their own practice. I cleared my mind of his presence and focused on the steps that Kelly’s been teaching us. Fortunately, after what seemed like forever, Kelly called for a dismissal. Yahoo! I survived. I looked around, but I don’t see a brown-haired guy. I shrugged my shoulders and headed to the girls’ locker room. I took a quick shower and headed to my locker where my clothes are hangered. I changed into a more comfortable clothing and applied a little amount of perfume. When I opened my bag to get my necklace, it was nowhere to be found. I was sure I left it here after Kelly said that no jewelries are allowed during practices. This is bad! s**t! “Amy, have you seen a necklace around here somewhere?” I asked Amy who has her locker next to mine. “No, why?” she answered. “Are you sure? I-It’s a necklace with a red circular pendant.” I’m starting to panic. “No Heaven. I’m sorry.” “Okay thanks.” Holy shizzle! Don’t tell me, I lost it? Dammit! I think I just have to ask the care-taker in charge of the girls’ locker room. How can this day get any worse? I stepped outside the locker room, when a deep voice erupted from somewhere. “How’s practice?” I spun to see that Kohell’s leaning on the concrete wall of the locker room, armed with a very wicked smirk. Now my day’s at its worst. *** A/N: Another short update. Oh My! Not enough KoVen moments. :DD This is not a one-man story, folks. :P Chasing Hell has a rank again.
