Shannon’s POV. It is Christmas Eve, and I have woken up super early again. The house is quiet. The twins are sleeping peacefully and only woke for a feed once during the night, and Chance, well, he always sleeps well. I’m downstairs on the front porch. Wrapped in a blanket with the baby monitor beside me and in my gloved hands is a mug of the good stuff. I blow on it and take a sip and let the bitter taste of the coffee warm my lips and tongue as I swallow it down. I know I was acting irrationally yesterday, but no one threatens my kids. Any mother would have done the same. I sigh, leaning back on the porch swing, and look up at the ceiling of the wrap-around porch. It is still dark, and it is five in the morning. The world is still dark and sleeping and here I am once again, awake. M
