“Galza’s third eye erupts again. Oma does not see the bolt of corruption until it burrows into her chest. For one long heartbeat, she remains motionless, as if she is being held aloft by an invisible set of wings. Then she begins to fall—a bottom-first plummet that ends in a bone-shattering collision with the upper reaches of our mountain. An ominous rumbling fills the air then, and the ground beneath our feet begins to convulse. Plates of solid rock sprout fast-growing cracks, boulders go tumbling down the slope. When we take to the sky to escape the quaking, we see that the mountain-side is now growing a earth-encrusted bulge. Upward it swells, as if straining for the sky. Everything in its way is uprooted.
