CHAPTER 1
HAZEL POV
“Where is Hazel!” I heard my mother-in-law shout my name with so much hatred. Goosebumps dotted my skin as I walked out of the kitchen with a bowl of water. My skin tingled with fear.
“I have told you, Mother. The only thing she can do is walk around leisurely without doing anything. She is the one who poisoned my brother, no doubt. She pushed him to his death because of how he treated her,” I heard Zoe say. My heart ached, and uncontrollable tears stung my eyes.
I had been married to Theodore for the past two years, and it was the worst decision I had ever made. I was a weak human and had always been called a jinx right from birth. I lost my mother on the night I turned ten and was adopted into another family. I had lived each day blaming myself. After living with my adopted parents for a year, they lost their lives in an accident.
Since then, I had detached myself from people because it seemed the rumour was true after all. I was a jinx. I met Theodore in my sophomore year, and we got married after we finished school. It seemed my entire life had been a lie because Theodore’s parents hated my guts. I was just a weak human and didn’t even know who my birth father was, even though I lived among werewolves.
Theodore had treated me well for some time until they realised I couldn’t get pregnant. I was shamed and abused by his parents, but he never said a word. I was called barren, and at a point, he joined them too. That was when I realised there was nothing I could do.
I had endured all the humiliation, but two months ago, Theodore was brought home poisoned. The physician said he had been poisoned with an Alpha’s claw and that only the Alpha himself could cure him.
“I only told her to get me water to rub on my son since she has decided to laze around. I know she is a curse, but I never expected her to be like this even to her own husband. How could she do this?” Mother shouted. My pulse quickened, knowing what awaited me if I got to her side too late.
I ran as fast as my legs could carry me towards her before she hurled more insults at me. “I’m sorry, Mother,” I said. She slapped me hard across the face.
I dropped to my knees immediately and began to plead for mercy.
“Zoe. Get me that cane,” I heard her say to her daughter. I knew I should have run away, but they knew all my weaknesses. Everything I had worked for was in their possession.
“Alright, Mama. It’s been a long time since she actually got punished,” Zoe said, victory shining in her eyes.
I held onto the front of my dress and stopped pleading, knowing it would only worsen my suffering.
“I want you to try running away, Hazel. Leave my son and your worthless life. If I were you, I would have taken poison instead. There is no point in keeping you here,” Mother said, just like she always did.
Maybe my fragile body had grown accustomed to it, because I was no longer affected. Zoe returned with a long cane in her hand. I closed my eyes, preparing myself for the impact, but the door suddenly swung open.
“I have found a cure!” I heard Theodore’s father say from the doorway. I fluttered my eyes open.
Father walked towards Mother, and we quickly closed the distance. She held onto her husband’s hand.
“What?” she asked in a shaky voice. “What do you mean you have found a cure? Where is it? Will Theodore open his eyes again? Will he walk again?” she asked. Even I felt a spark of happiness at the news.
Maybe I would finally be free. I could file for a divorce and leave this toxic family once and for all.
“I don’t have it with me, woman! I found a solution,” Father said. He walked over to one of the couches and sat down.
“Oh Goddess, and I thought you already had the antidote,” Mother said, disappointment clear in her tone.
“Tell me what the solution is. Did you find another cure?” Mother asked as Zoe walked closer.
“What is it, Father?” she asked. I paid close attention to whatever he was about to say.
“I need you all to listen to me,” Theodore’s father said. Then his eyes fell on me. I swallowed, knowing he was about to add more fuel to the fire.
“What did Hazel do? Why is she on her knees?” Father asked, surprising me. Even Zoe looked shocked because he was never the type to ask such a question.
“I told her to get me water to wipe Theodore’s body. She took—”
“Stand up, daughter,” my father-in-law said and rose from his seat.
I blinked twice to be sure I wasn’t dreaming. There was no way he would show me empathy like this. I was shocked to the core. Why was he suddenly acting as if he cared?
Well, maybe this was one of his tactics before he unleashed his anger on me. But to my greatest surprise, he actually helped me up and told me to sit beside him.
“What are you doing, Sullivan? I’m punishing her for what she did. Trying to teach her a lesson. She can’t be eating our food when she doesn’t even owe our son a child,” Mother said with hatred. Each word burned like a dagger in my heart.
“Let’s leave her for today. The solution I found requires Hazel to be aware because she is the one we need to rely on right now. We need her help,” Father said. I wanted to let out a cold laugh. How could I have thought they would ever consider me part of the family except when they needed my help?
“Then go on. He is her husband, so of course she needs to help,” Mother said. I wanted to ask her why she suddenly remembered I was their son’s wife when I had been living like a maid.
“I’m glad she is not hurt in any way,” Father said, inspecting my face for bruises.
“It’s happening tonight,” he suddenly announced. Everyone present looked at him in confusion.
“What is happening tonight?” Zoe asked.
“The masquerade ball party that is held once at the Pack house. The only day someone can sneak into his room and retrieve the antidote,” Father said. I still didn’t understand where the conversation was leading.
How exactly would they need my help?
“And how are you so sure he has the antidote in his room? What if it is elsewhere?” Mother asked.
“No one has ever stolen anything from him. No one is bold enough to enter the Alpha King’s room. You all know how he is,” Father said. I knew exactly who they were talking about.
Alpha Knox Barrett of the Ravencrest Pack.
“Then how do you expect us to get it when you just said no one would dare do that? Who is bold enough to go inside his room tonight?” Zoe asked. Father smiled.
“That is why we need Hazel’s help,” Father said and turned to face me.
At first, I thought this was some cruel joke. There was no way they would push me to my own death. But everyone cast their gaze on me.
“I want you to go to the masquerade ball party and get the item from his room. That is all, and your husband will be saved,” Father said. My heart drummed violently against my chest.
