Chapter 12: Three to One

674 Words
The air in Maya's living room was thick with the scent of pepperoni pizza and the crisp bubbles of cheap prosecco. This was my sanctuary—the "Inner Circle." Aside from Sarah, there was Elena, who was always practical, and Tasha, who lived for a good romantic drama. Then there was Chloe, the quietest of the bunch, who usually just listened. "Okay, spill it," Tasha said, pointing a slice of pizza at me. "I saw the photos from Friday night. You looked like a movie star, and Julian looked like... well, like he could buy the movie studio. How was it?" I slumped back into the cushions, pulling my knees to my chest. "It was perfect. And that’s the problem. He was perfect, the food was perfect, the attention was perfect. It was everything a girl is supposed to want." "But?" Sarah prompted, sensing the 'but' hanging in the air like a heavy cloud. "But Liam was waiting on my doorstep when I got home," I whispered. A collective gasp filled the room. I spent the next twenty minutes recounting the doorstep confession, the tension in the school hallway, and the way I felt like I was being torn in two. "Maya, listen to me," Elena said, her practical voice cutting through my confusion. "Liam is comfortable. He’s safe. But Julian is an opportunity. He’s successful, he’s ambitious, and he clearly adores you. Sometimes we stay with the 'best friend' because we’re afraid of the unknown. Don't let fear keep you from a guy like Julian." "I agree," Tasha added, her eyes gleaming. "The 'best friend' trope is cute in books, but in real life? It’s messy. If it fails with Liam, you lose your entire social foundation. If it fails with Julian, you just find a new restaurant. Go for the upgrade!" Sarah nodded slowly. "I love Liam, I really do. But maybe he’s just your past, Maya. Julian could be your future. You deserve a guy who takes you to The Obsidian, not a guy who sits on your floor with a bag of spicy wings." I felt the weight of their logic pressing down on me. Three votes for the shiny, new, "perfect" life. It made sense. It was the logical choice. "What about you, Chloe?" I asked, looking at the only one who hadn't spoken. Chloe set her glass down and looked me straight in the eye. "I think they’re all wrong." The room went silent. "Julian knows which wine you like because he looked at the menu," Chloe said softly. "Liam knows which coffee you need because he’s been paying attention for ten years. You can't buy that kind of history. If you go with Julian, you’ll always be performing. With Liam, you’re already home. Why would you trade a home for a hotel room just because it looks fancy?" Tasha rolled her eyes. "That’s so sentimental, Chloe." "It’s not sentimental," Chloe countered. "It’s real. Maya, look at your hands. When you talk about Julian, you’re twisting your ring because you’re nervous. When you mentioned Liam waiting for you, you smiled for a split second before you caught yourself. Your heart already knows the answer. You’re just waiting for your brain to catch up." I looked down at my hands. Chloe was right. I was twisting my ring. "I'm just so confused," I admitted, my voice trembling. "I don't want to lose what I have with Liam, but I'm scared that if I don't give Julian a chance, I'll always wonder 'what if?'" "Then give him a chance," Sarah said. "One real date. No faculty, no work talk. Just a date. If the spark isn't there, you'll know." I nodded slowly, but as I looked at the empty seat next to me, I couldn't help but wish it was filled by a man in a denim jacket who knew exactly how much sugar I liked in my tea.
