Chapter 1:The Coffee Ritual
Chapter 1: The Coffee Ritual I’ve always believed that you can tell the temperature of a friendship by how much silence it can hold. With Liam, the silence was a warm blanket. We were sitting in our usual corner booth at The Ledger, a tiny cafe tucked between two brick buildings that smelled perpetually of roasted beans and old paper. I was staring at my laptop, the cursor blinking like a taunt, while he sat across from me, sketching in his notebook. "You’re overthinking the third paragraph again," Liam said without looking up. His pencil didn't stop moving. I groaned, leaning my forehead against the cool screen. "Is it that obvious?" "You have a 'logic' wrinkle right between your eyebrows when you're stuck," he murmured. Finally, he looked up, and for a second, I forgot what I was writing about. His eyes were soft, shielded by the dark frames of his glasses, and he was wearing that specific lopsided smile he saved just for me. "Take a sip of your latte. It’s getting cold." I reached for the cup, but my fingers brushed against his hand as he pushed the sugar packet toward me. It was a tiny, inconsequential touch—something that had happened a thousand times over the last ten years—but today, a spark shot up my arm that made my breath hitch. I pulled back a little too quickly, the ceramic clattering against the table. "Right. Caffeine. The cure for everything." Liam’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a look of intense curiosity. He didn't look away. In fact, he leaned in closer, the scent of his cologne—something like cedar and rain—filling my space. "Everything okay?" he asked. His voice dropped an octave, that low, grounded tone that usually made me feel safe. But today, it made my heart hammer against my ribs like a trapped bird. "Fine," I lied, taking a gulp of coffee that was definitely too hot. "Just a long day." He watched me for a beat longer than necessary. There was something in his gaze I couldn't quite read—a heaviness, or maybe a hope. "If you need a break," Liam said, his voice barely a whisper, "we could just go. The world won't end if you don't finish this chapter tonight." I looked at him—really looked at him—and realized that while I had been busy looking at the world, he had been busy looking at me. "Let's stay," I said softly. "I like it here." He nodded, and as he went back to his sketch, I realized I hadn't looked at my laptop screen in five minutes. I was too busy wondering why my best friend’s hands suddenly looked so much like something I wanted to hold.
