I cried uncontrollably while clutching my father's wrinkled hand as he lay in a coma. It had been two months, and my father showed no signs of waking up.
“Alejandro betrayed me, Dad. My heart hurts so much, it feels like it’s killing me slowly.”
Jacob was my only family member. My mother had passed away, and I had no siblings.
Tears and snot were running everywhere, but I didn’t care. “Dad, I’m sorry for my foolishness. I should have listened to you from the beginning and not married Alejandro.”
Alejandro is so ungrateful! How could he throw me away for that woman? Has he forgotten all I sacrificed for him?!
If I hadn’t persuaded my dad to partner with Conner Corp, that man wouldn’t have become as successful as he is now.
But I never expected Alejandro to secretly take over all my father’s partnerships, leading him to bankruptcy.
Unfortunately, I only found out about it recently. I regret being too busy with the IVF treatments.
“You’re so stupid, Hannah. So stupid!” I cursed myself.
I was stupid for being lured by Alejandro’s sweet talk into handing over Baxlor Corp for him to manage temporarily until my dad recovered, just so I could focus on my duties as a wife.
But I never imagined he would use that opportunity to seize all my father's partnerships and projects.
My father had worked hard to build Baxlor Corp into the second-largest company in the world, and I destroyed it.
I regretted dropping out of college after Alejandro proposed to me. Now, I can’t do anything to save my father’s company.
I wiped my tears roughly. I couldn’t give up. I had to get back to my father’s company. I couldn’t let my father’s hard work go to waste.
I wouldn’t let Alejandro and Camilla enjoy our wealth and live happily.
I looked at my father’s pale face, feeling guilty. I had always been a burden to him. Now, I can’t keep relying on him.
“Don’t worry, Dad,” I said with determination. “I promise I’ll take back our company. No matter what it takes.” I kissed my father’s hand.
“Excuse me, Miss,” a nurse approached me. “I’m sorry to disturb you, but I have to give you this letter.”
“What is it?” I took it.
“It’s the bill for Mr. Jacob’s two-month stay.”
“What?” I gasped. “But my husband has never been late to paying the bills. There must be some mistake,” I protested.
“No, Miss. But Mr. Alejandro refused to pay for it. He told us to bill you directly because you’re his daughter.”
I growled in anger. 'How dare he be so cruel to my father!'
My hands clenched tightly until they turned white. I swore I would destroy Alejandro and that mistress.
I didn’t care if he hurt me, but I would never forgive anyone who hurt my father.
“I’ll pay it.”
“Alright. Please follow me.”
I followed the nurse to the reception and handed my black card to the administrative staff.
“I’m sorry, Miss. This card is blocked. Do you have another card?”
“That’s impossible. Try again.” I insisted. The staff tried again.
“I’m sorry, Miss, it still doesn’t work. Would you like to use another card or pay in cash?”
I didn’t carry any cash in my wallet because, nowadays, it’s rarely used.
“I’ll be back.” I hurriedly went to the luxurious mansion where Alejandro and I lived. The mansion was a gift from my father as a wedding present.
As I entered, memories of the good times stored in the mansion flashed through my mind. But now, everything was different. There was no warmth, only devastation.
“I didn’t expect you’d dare come here after I divorced you.”
I stopped in my tracks as that disgusting voice echoed from behind me. With disgust, I turned around and saw Alejandro holding Camilla tightly, with his other hand carrying a large suitcase.
“This is my mansion,” I replied coldly. I tried not to show any expressions, even though my heart was aching from seeing their affection.
“Not anymore. I’ve given this mansion to Camilla because she’s going to be my wife. I’ve already changed the ownership to her name. And not just that, your car, your jewelry, and all your father’s assets are now mine, including the clothes you’re wearing.”
“Bastard!” I couldn’t help but curse. “You can’t do that!”
Alejandro chuckled, pleased by my anger. “It’s no use protesting. The notary has already validated it! Pack your things and get out of here.”
“I won’t! I won’t leave! You two should be the ones to go! This mansion belongs to my father!”
“So stubborn! Do I have to use force to kick you out, huh?!” Alejandro snapped.
“Go ahead! I’m not afraid!”
“You—”
“Calm down, darling. Let her stay here. After all, she’s still your wife, right?” Camilla smiled softly while caressing Alejandro’s muscular arm to calm him.
“I don’t want her to be homeless after you kick her out.” She glanced at me, taunting.
Alejandro sighed heavily. His anger instantly vanished, replaced by delight. “You’re an angel, darling. I’m so proud of you for still being kind to her even though she’s been cruel to you.”
Cruel? Did Alejandro just accuse me of being cruel? If there had been a knife nearby, I would have stabbed them both to death.
“Did you block my black card, huh?!"
Alejandro nodded without hesitation. “I decided to block it because we’re getting divorced. Why should I still support you?”
“That black card is in my father’s name, not yours!"
“But all your father’s wealth is mine now. You have no rights anymore, even if you’re his daughter!" Alejandro sneered mockingly.
“Bastard! I swear I’ll get back at you, devil!”
“Get back at me?!” Alejandro laughed wickedly. “How? You have nothing left except your useless father! He’s going to die soon, and then you’ll have no one to protect you!”
My eyes burned, and my chest tightened. His words felt like a knife stabbing straight into my heart, but I fought hard not to cry in front of them.
“Come on, darling.” Alejandro smiled at Camilla. “You must be tired, right? I’ll take you to bed.” He carried Camilla, then walked towards the bedroom Alejandro and I used to share, kissing her in front of me.
I burst into tears. But I bit my lower lip hard, so my sobs wouldn’t be heard.
I staggered as my stomach suddenly ached and I felt nauseous. I quickly grabbed the wall to keep myself from collapsing, but then everything went black.
