I wailed loudly at my father’s grave. "Why did you leave me all alone, Dad?! Why didn’t you take me with you?! I have no one left here!"
The rain started to pour, soaking me, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to stay by my father’s side because there was nowhere else for me to turn.
Suddenly, Alejandro came to mind. My fists clenched so tightly that they turned white. After reflecting on the accident that took my father’s life, I was convinced Alejandro was behind it, to freely seize Baxlor Corp.
He knew I was too naive in business, so he didn’t need to eliminate me.
I wiped away my tears roughly. "I can’t die before I take revenge on Alejandro and Camilla and make them suffer as my father and I did! I swear on my father’s name that I’ll destroy them!"
"Oh, s**t!" I hurriedly left the cemetery. Today was the day of Alejandro and Mateo’s meeting, and it was also my only chance to meet him.
I quickly headed to a salon and boutique after borrowing money from my friends. Even though they sneered at me, I didn’t care.
I hurriedly got out of the taxi and entered my mansion. The front yard was filled with bodyguards and Mateo’s luxury cars.
"He’s already here."
I jogged toward the door. The tight red dress that showed off my curves made it difficult to walk normally. The dress was held up by a single strap, exposing my smooth, exotically tan shoulders.
Mateo’s bodyguards let me in, probably still thinking I was Alejandro’s wife.
I entered the meeting room with a graceful smile and found them in the middle of a conversation. I was surprised to see that things were tense.
When Alejandro turned, he was shocked to see me. His lustful eyes scanned my body greedily.
"Welcome, Mr. Mateo." I smiled politely, ignoring Alejandro’s expression.
Mateo raised an eyebrow when he saw me, seeming confused.
"Isn’t Hannah your wife, Alejandro?" Mateo asked sharply, causing Alejandro to become nervous instantly. "So why are you introducing this stranger as your wife? Even though I don’t know you well, I know your wife is Hannah, not her."
“I-I…” Alejandro stammered while Camilla hung her head in shame.
Mateo’s jaw tightened, and his eyes showed hidden anger. "Is she your mistress?"
All three of us were shocked. How could he have guessed correctly? Was Mateo some kind of god? Strangely, why did he seem angry? I could see a flash of fury in his beautiful green eyes, even though he tried to hide it.
Seeing this, I raised my chin confidently and walked closer to Mateo.
“It’s been a long time since we last met, Mr. Mateo. I hope you haven’t forgotten the daughter of your father’s friend.” I made sure to emphasize the statement so Alejandro and Camilla could hear it.
“Of course,” Mateo replied coldly. “I’m not an old man with a memory problem.”
I sighed in relief at his response. I thought he might deny it, which would have been embarrassing.
I glanced at Alejandro. He looked shocked.
“You two know each other?” Alejandro asked, trembling. "How is that possible?"
“Are you Mr. Jacob’s son-in-law?” Mateo sneered, his baritone voice laced with hidden contempt. “I agreed to work with you because I knew you were Mr. Jacob’s son-in-law and Hannah’s husband. If not, I wouldn’t have accepted your offer. So, of course, I know his daughter.”
Alejandro seemed even more helpless. His face paled, and his lips dried out. I smirked in satisfaction. Just one more step, and I would succeed in defeating him.
“May I speak with you, Mr. Mateo?” I asked politely.
“My visit here is indeed to meet with you, Mrs. Conner.”
“What do you mean, Mr. Mateo?” Alejandro interrupted, refusing to accept it. He looked annoyed that Mateo preferred to talk to me. “Aren’t you here to discuss our business?”
“Hannah is Mr. Jacob’s daughter, the owner of Baxlor Corp. I need to discuss this project with her because she is,” Mateo looked at me meaningfully, “the only reason I agreed to your partnership.”
Alejandro stared in disbelief, while Camilla became even more uncomfortable as her position became irrelevant.
I was immensely satisfied with their reactions. Alejandro must regret abandoning me for that cheap woman.
“Can we speak privately in another room?” I asked courteously.
“Sure.”
I glanced at Alejandro briefly before closing the door. I could see him standing there in shock.

Mateo and I sat in one of the guest rooms, which had two sofas and a tea table.
I waited for Mateo to finish sipping his coffee and place the cup back on the table.
“What important matter do you want to discuss with me, Mrs. Conner?”
“You can just call me Hannah.”
“Alright.”
I was relieved he didn’t ask why.
“So, what do you want to talk about, Hannah?”
I bit my lower lip, feeling nervous. The words I had prepared before meeting him vanished from my mind.
For a moment, I doubted myself.
“I don’t have much time,” Mateo sneered. His attitude was just as irritating as it had always been. I wondered why my friends were so crazy about him.
I couldn’t deny that he was very handsome. His thick eyebrows, strong jawline with a slight stubble, and muscular build were impressive.
“I want you to cancel your partnership with Alejandro, my ex-husband, Mr. Mateo,” I requested with a stiff smile, “because he’s a traitor.”
Mateo couldn’t hide his surprise behind his usual flat expression. “Since when did you divorce Alejandro?”
Why was Mateo more interested in this than in Alejandro’s betrayal of my father?
“We’re not officially divorced yet, but we agreed to separate two days ago.” As much as I hated to, I had to explain.
“What was the reason?”
“Because…” I bowed my head, my mouth clamped shut. Should I tell him the embarrassing truth that my husband cheated because I was infertile?
“Did he cheat on you with that woman and get her pregnant?” Mateo guessed.
I was stunned. “How did you know, Mr. Mateo?”
A mischievous grin spread across Mateo’s lips, an expression I’d never seen on him before. “Nothing is a secret to me.”
His words sent a shiver down my spine. I knew Mateo was intelligent, but I didn’t think he was omniscient.
“I’ll cancel it,” Mateo answered without hesitation.
“Really?” My eyes lit up with happiness. “Thank you—”
“But on one condition.” Mateo’s voice was firm and intimidating. He leaned in closer, staring at me intently, making my heart race.
I bit my lower lip and suddenly forgot how to breathe.
“What’s that?” I asked, trying to stay calm.
“Marry me.”
