Taryn, more nimble than her sister, stepped boldly down the path, taking six or seven steps at once before Tirion moved again. Had she not been acting as look out, Yvonnya would have screwed her eyes up tight, crushed as she was by a feeling that something awful was about to happen. The guard, now bored with his position, had slumped against the post of the gate, his back still to the forest. He had pulled his knife from its holster and was now chucking it idly over and over with his left hand, catching it by the hilt every time. Darik could not believe that there were no manned towers on the perimeter of the compound, but from his vantage point he scoured every single tower in his eye line and they were all seemingly abandoned.
