Chapter four

ALPHA DARIUS POV I can’t believe I found my mate. I had imagined so many ways in which we would meet. But none of them was this way. I mean, how could my mate be sent to kill me? It felt even surreal to my ears. If I were the person who found her, I would have given her a lighter punishment. Not this. But it was Vivian who found her lying on my bed with the dagger out in the open. Some time into the night, I had woken up and found her sprawled out beside me. And I didn’t mind. Which was unusual. I never let random females near me. I was a strict no-touching man who gets down to business with these whores. But something about her when she walked in… How could I even let myself get so drunk last night? It was the night my parents were killed years ago. I needed a break from pack duties so I found a spot to chill in. I ran my hand through my hair for maybe the thousandth time. I was losing it. And my wolf wasn’t making it easy on me. He wanted me to release her, to set her free. But I can’t. How would these people see me? I was the no-nonsense Alpha. I despised weak males. If I realized her, I would be perceived as weak. A knock on the door made me look up from the documents I had tried to sign for the past hour. “It's all set Alpha,” a guard said after the opened the door. He waited by the door for my next order but I waved him off. As much as I tried to leave her there in the dungeon, I couldn’t. Not with the look of defeat in her eyes when she told me she didn't know the name of the person who sent her. But I knew it was Karen. That bastard. She still wasn’t over me. She abused me as a teenager and I had no choice but to date her secretly for three years. Someone who was old enough to be my aunt. I laughed maniacally. But it was consent. I was eighteen so technically I was an adult. But damn her, she manipulated me into being with her. Without giving myself another stupid reason not to see her, I walked to my room where a huge cage was set in for my mate. It was the worst I could do. Even if it was pathetic. She was huddled at the far end of the cage. Her food was untouched. Anger rose in me. She shouldn’t be starving herself. Emotions took over and I walked over to the cage and opened it. The noise from the lock jolted her away. Her eyes were wide with fear as she stared at me. “Eat!” I commanded. But she looked at the food and back at me without making a move. “I said eat.” “I heard you the first time. I’m not hungry,” she rasped in a dry voice. And I realized why she was huddled in the corner. I moved out of the cage and closed the window. I returned to the cage. Even though I wanted to take her in my arms and feed her, I couldn’t. I would look like a psycho. Here I was standing in front of her glowering at her. She was stubborn. I knew she hadn’t had a meal in days. And I itched for her story - how Karen had gotten a hold of her. Seeing that I wouldn’t budge without seeing her eat, she picked up the food and began to eat slowly. Satisfied with finishing up her food, I returned to my office in a lighter mood. However, the sight of Vivian standing in my office gave me an itch. “You can’t take her into your room. She’s dangerous,” she said immediately after I walked in. “I can take care of myself,” I countered my voice rising. “Says the man who couldn’t...” “Don’t you dare Vivian. I can only take as much as your taunts. Don’t tempt me.” I turned sharply towards her, angered by her words. She snickered and rested her hand on her hips. The hips that once made me go crazy. Once upon a time, Vivian was the love of my life. After waiting four years and not finding my mate, I decided to make her Luna. But she betrayed me. And I cannot handle betrayal no matter how small it was. Her jaw worked furiously, “The elders will not allow it.” “I don’t care what they think. This is my pack and will do as I see fit,” I stormed to my window my shoulders tensed. My stomach twisted. She was right, the elders would not allow it. I still hadn’t gotten full control of the pack because I didn’t have a Luna. But I couldn’t let them harm my mate. I couldn’t. “Okay, fine,” she said in a pained voice and walked out of the room. Vivian is one of the few people who knew the girl, Emily in my room is my fated mate. If I had a choice, I would have broken up all ties with her after she couldn’t keep her legs closed for one of the warriors. But I had to swallow the bitter pill while working with her because she’s my beta. Vivian had tried multiple times in the past to get me back. But each time I see her face, I see betrayal and how she had shattered me. Walking over to my desk, I took a cigarette and smoked. But after three, I still felt restless. All these were something beyond my power. I wished my father was still alive. Not wanting to soak in self-pity, I took a run in the woods until I was bone tired. I didn’t want to sleep in the same room with my mate so I decided to work until dawn. At least it kept my mind away from my wandering thoughts. The day went by in a blur with only me giving instructions to the maid to deliver food to Emily. After the last episode with Vivian, she didn’t bug me again. And I was grateful. Plus I hadn’t heard anything from the elders which meant word hadn’t gotten to them. Two more days went by. I was running away from Emily. Running away from confronting her. Maybe because I was scared I would give in to her pleas. I may keep a brave front in front of her. But all I wanted was for her to be safe. The pen broke under my weight, staining the papers. It was my cue. I had over-exerted myself. I needed a respite even if it was just five minutes of seeing her. The thought of seeing Emily again made me light. I made sure to shower so I wouldn’t smell bad to her. After washing up, I ordered a maid to bring me chocolates. Girls like chocolates and other things. I didn’t know what other things were so I rested. I smiled. The thought of her eyes lighting up while I gave her the chocolate made my legs go faster. However, what I found in my room wasn’t what I expected. The cage door was wide open with her nowhere in sight. And the window was opened. Her scent was faint which meant she had been gone for more than four hours. “Goddamit!” I cursed harshly throwing the chocolates on the floor. I knew what I had to do. Good thing I took up Vivian’s advice about installing cameras all over the house. Although no one knows I secretly did it so they wouldn’t have to have their guards up at all times. I stormed to my office. Someone must have let her out. It boiled my blood that I may not have to see her again. I gritted my teeth so hard I felt it might snap in two. But I didn’t care. I cursed the bastard to hell and back while I watched the footage. Some hours into the video, the image of Vivian walking out of my office with a sly smile made my blood run cold. Taking it back, I noticed something different. Vivian walked into the room with a piece of paper but came out empty-handed. Whatever was in that paper held all the answers. My wolf was mad. So was I. Opening up the mind link, I called for Vivian. I guess she could hear the rage in my voice because she came in after three minutes. As she stood before me without an ounce of remorse, I felt the need to touch blood. “What happened with Emily?” I asked as calmly as I could muster.
