Chapter one
Selina's pov
I hummed to a song in my head as I walked towards Jackson’s father’s room. I had been taking care of the sick man for close to a year. And he was starting to get better even though he only twitched his fingers yesterday.
But it was happy news for Jackson and me. We planned to celebrate it today in his office away from everyone’s eyes. Jackson and I had been secretly dating for six months after he found out he was my mate.
He didn’t want the pack to know about it. I could understand his reasons. I am an orphan girl who works as a maid. The story of my parents’ death is not clear. But it’s said by the former Alpha that they betrayed the pack and had to be killed.
The song still hummed in my head when I got to the room. I opened the door to the room and found people gathered there. They were mostly guards and just a few maids. The air was tense, and my throat immediately went dry. I couldn’t understand what was happening.
No one barely comes here. From the looks on their faces, something terrible had gone wrong. I couldn’t understand what until I saw Jackson.
My lips parted to call his name. But something about the tension made me stop.
He was standing at the far end of the room, close to the bed by his father. He was sniffing. His back was to me and his eyes were on his father.
Even though I didn’t want to admit it, I knew the mood in the room was caused by the late alpha. Gathering nerves I knew I didn’t have, I walked into the room, ignoring the gazes of all the others.
My only focus was Jackson. He smelt me. I knew he did because I’m his mate and he has excellent smelling ability. But he didn’t turn to me. In the past, he would have turned around and given me a secret smile just for me. A smile that made butterflies erupt in my belly.
“Why did you do it,” Jackson asked, his voice raw with emotion. Hairs stood on end all over me. But I didn’t stop my stride.
“Do what?” I asked softly almost as if raising my voice would break the heavy ice in the room.
The room had gone quiet. I could feel all eyes judging me. The people never liked me in the first place. Whatever happened in here was enough reason for them to despise me.
“Why did you do it?” Jackson asked again, turning to face me.
His eyes were wet and red. Only one thing could make Jackson cry. His father. My eyes snapped to Alpha Jake on the bed. He looked peaceful at sleep. But there was something else. His lips. They were blue.
I gasped when the realization hit me. Alpha Jake was dead. I plumped down on my knees, my throat closing up with emotions. How could I explain to everyone that I didn’t kill Alpha Jake? How could I explain to anyone? I was the only one who had access to him. I left him a few minutes ago to go clean one of the rooms. He was fine then.
“I didn’t,” I choked back tears, crawling on my knees towards Jackson.
The look in his eyes made a tear drop. He looked at me like I was scum. His eyes blazed with hidden anger. There was disgust hidden in them. The thought of Jackson being disgusted by me made my heart bleed.
“Please you have to believe me,” I choked out, more tears falling. I felt hopeless. There was no way.
But I was his mate. He had to believe me even if no one else did.
“Then how do you explain this?” Jackson pulled out a gloved hand from behind him holding a needle. “Wolfsbane!” He hissed. “With your prints.”
Jackson walked slowly towards me. His eyes flickered between gold and amber.
I flinched as my mouth went dry. I didn’t know what he was talking about. I had never seen that needle until now.
But I didn’t back down from his glare even though it shattered my heart into a million pieces.
“I don’t know…”
“I trusted you, Selina. I wanted to make you Luna in two weeks. I wanted you to rule by my side despite the rumors about you. I wanted to give you a name. But this is how you betray me?”
I shook my head as tears fell from my eyes. My hands were clasped in front of me, pleading silently. I didn’t do it. Jackson stood in front of me, his smell washing all over me.
“You know, I thought you were different.” He bent low to my level on the ground, “But you give me no choice Selene.”
My heart dropped to the bottom of my stomach. I clutched his pants hoping for a miracle, for anything. He wanted to reject me. I saw it in his gaze.
“I, Jackson Veerwood of Greenwich pack, reject Selina Stone as my wife and future Luna,” he spat while shifting away from my hold.
The pain came like a tornado, strong and mighty. I clutched my belly while gritting my teeth. Even if I had nothing left, I had to have my dignity.
I called for my wolf but she was silent. Like the broken mate bond had taken her away too.
“Take her away. I never want to set eyes on her again,” his voice was distant. I felt strong hands grip me and took me to the dungeon.
In the dungeon, I gazed at the ceiling, too numb to speak or think. Just like that, I had been rejected and my hopes dashed.
I tried to ignore the painful spasms in my heart. But it was hard when all I could think about was Jackson. It’s been three days here and no sign of guards or Jackson.
Footsteps came. To my dismay, they weren’t Jackson’s. But a guard.
“Come with me. We have to get there by sunset,” the guards opened the gate and yanked me to my feet.
“Where?” My throat felt dry and patched. I hadn’t had anything in three days.
The guard’s silence was all I needed. We got into a car with two other guards and drove away from the pack. A few minutes out of the pack, there was an accident with another car.
But it had been a setup. The guards were incapacitated. While I tried to unlock the door with my handcuffed hands, the door flew open. And a sack was thrown on my head.
