Chapter 1 : Divorce Papers
💔 Divorce Papers “Sign the divorce papers.” Alexander Knight’s voice was cold. Flat. Completely devoid of emotion. The brown folder slid across the marble table, the faint scraping sound echoing sharply in the vast, luxurious living room. The sound lingered longer than it should have… as if even the air itself had frozen. I didn’t move. Not immediately. My eyes rested on the folder in front of me, its edges perfectly aligned, its surface untouched—just like the man sitting across from me. Untouchable. Unreachable. Unfeeling. Silence swallowed the room. No one spoke. But I could feel it—the weight of their gazes pressing down on me, suffocating, expectant… as though they were all waiting for a show. Waiting for me to break. Slowly, I reached forward. My fingers brushed against the smooth surface of the folder before I pulled it closer. Then, carefully, I opened it. Inside were several neatly arranged documents, each page pristine, untouched—prepared in advance, as if this moment had been planned long before I even stepped into this room tonight. My eyes fell immediately on the bold title at the top. DIVORCE AGREEMENT For a brief moment, my chest tightened. Not from pain. Not from heartbreak. But from something far stranger. Relief. A quiet, unexpected sense of release, like finally reaching the end of something that had long since stopped being real. Three years. For three long years, I had been married to Alexander Knight—the most powerful young CEO in the city. Admired. Feared. Untouchable. And yet, for three years… I had been nothing to him. Not his partner. Not his equal. Not even his wife. Just a shadow in his life. A convenient existence. A name on paper. I lowered my gaze to the documents again. Three years of silence. Three years of waiting. Three years of loving someone who never once looked back at me. And now… It all came down to a few sheets of paper. “How long are you going to sit there?” The sharp, irritated voice of my mother-in-law shattered the silence. I lifted my head slightly. Mrs. Knight was staring at me, her expression filled with impatience and disdain, as if my mere existence in this room was already an inconvenience. “Hurry up and sign it,” she said coldly. “Don’t waste our time. We have more important matters to attend to.” More important. Of course. I glanced around the room. Everyone was here. Mrs. Knight. Sophia—Alexander’s younger sister. A few close relatives, all seated comfortably, all watching me with varying degrees of amusement and contempt. And then… My gaze finally landed on him. Alexander Knight. My husband. Or perhaps… my soon-to-be ex-husband. He sat across from me, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his posture relaxed, his expression indifferent. His eyes weren’t even on me. Instead, he was scrolling through his phone, his attention completely elsewhere. As if this moment… As if I… Didn’t matter at all. But what stood out even more— Was the woman beside him? She was stunning. Beautiful in a way that demanded attention. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders in soft waves, her red dress hugging her figure perfectly, accentuating every curve with effortless elegance. Her hand rested casually—no, deliberately—on Alexander’s arm. As if she belonged there. As if she had always belonged there. I knew her. Victoria Hale. Alexander’s first love. The woman who had once abandoned him for a wealthier man… only to return now, when Alexander had risen to the top. Victoria met my gaze. And smiled. A slow, mocking smile filled with quiet triumph. “Alexander never loved you,” she said lightly, her voice smooth, almost playful. “You were nothing more than a temporary solution. A poor woman he married out of necessity.” Soft laughter rippled through the room. I lowered my gaze again. My fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the document. “That’s right,” Mrs. Knight added, her voice dripping with contempt. “For three years, you’ve been living off our family’s money. You should at least know your place.” Their words were sharp. Cruel. Deliberate. But strangely… They no longer hurt. Perhaps because I had heard them too many times. Perhaps because somewhere along the way… I had already stopped expecting anything different. “Why are you hesitating?” Victoria continued, crossing her arms as she leaned back slightly. “Or are you still hoping Alexander will change his mind?” Silence stretched between us. Then, slowly— I closed the folder. The soft sound echoed louder than expected. And then, I lifted my gaze. My eyes met Alexander’s. “This is what you want?” I asked quietly. For the first time since I entered the room— He looked up. Our eyes met. And for a brief moment… Time seemed to pause. But there was nothing in his gaze. No hesitation. No regret. No emotion. “You knew from the beginning,” he said calmly. “This was a business marriage.” A business marriage. Yes. That was true. Three years ago, the Knight Group had been on the verge of collapse. Debt. Pressure. Imminent failure. They needed a miracle. And my family… Provided it. On one condition. I would marry Alexander Knight. That was how it all began. A contract. A transaction. A deal. But there was one thing… One truth I had never revealed. Not to him. Not to his family. Not to anyone in this house. I never told them who I really was. Instead… I chose to stay. I cooked. I cleaned. I lived simply. I wore ordinary clothes. I never used my family’s name. Because foolishly… I wanted something real. I thought… Maybe, if I tried hard enough— If I loved him sincerely enough— He might eventually see me. But now I understand. To them… I had always been nothing more than a poor woman. An outsider. An inconvenience. How ridiculous. “If that’s the case…” I murmured. I reached for the pen. The movement immediately drew everyone’s attention. Victoria’s lips curled into a satisfied smile. Mrs. Knight crossed her arms, watching closely. Without hesitation— I signed. Evelyn Hayes. The name flowed smoothly across the paper. Clear. Decisive. Final. I closed the folder and pushed it back toward Alexander. “It’s done.” Victoria let out a soft laugh. “Finally. At least you know your place.” “Good,” Mrs. Knight said, standing up. “Now leave. And don’t ever come back.” I stood up. No one stopped me. No one spoke. No one cared. I turned and walked toward the door. Each step felt lighter than the last. Strangely… I felt free. As if something heavy that had been pressing down on me for years had finally been lifted. Three years. Three years of humiliation. Three years of trying to be enough. For someone who never even looked at me. And now— It was over. I opened the door and stepped outside. The evening air was cold. Sharp. Refreshing. For the first time in a long time… I could breathe. But just as I took a step forward— The sound of engines filled the air. I stopped. One car. Two. Three. More. A line of black luxury cars turned into the driveway, moving in perfect synchronization before coming to a smooth stop in front of the mansion. The gates opened automatically. The cars halted. And then— The door of the first car opened. A middle-aged man stepped out, dressed in an impeccable suit. His presence alone radiated authority. He walked straight toward me. Each step is steady. Purposeful. And then— He stopped in front of me. And bowed. “Miss Evelyn,” he said respectfully. “We’ve finally found you.” I let out a slow breath. Behind me, I heard the door open. Footsteps followed. “What is going on?” Mrs. Knight’s voice rang out sharply. Victoria scoffed. “Probably debt collectors.” But the man in front of me didn’t even glance at them. “Your family has sent us to bring you home,” he continued calmly. Silence fell. Heavy. Absolute. Slowly— I turned. My gaze met Alexander’s once more. And this time— For the first time in three years— I saw something different. Confusion. A flicker of doubt. A crack in his perfect composure. A faint smile curved my lips. So… It had finally begun. “Let’s go home, Miss,” the man said gently. I nodded. But before stepping into the car— I looked at Alexander one last time. Memorizing his face. Etching it into my memory. “Goodbye,” I said softly. “I hope you won’t regret this.” Then I turned— And stepped into the car. The door closed behind me. The engine started. And as the convoy slowly drove away— None of them realized… That the woman they had just discarded so easily— Was the one who had been holding up their entire world. And very soon— That world would begin to collapse.
