Chapter 1
"Oh yeah. That's the spot. Yeah. s**t, man." I stop in my tracks, my hand on the doorknob, as I hear a loud moan. I should be barging in there, ready to finally catch Dave with the lady I've always suspected he's cheating on me with. But I'm confused. Because the voice I'm hearing right now no doubt belongs to a male. "f**k yeah! Go deeper, man." What the hell? I'm tempted to think he's watching porn on TV. That's gotta be it, I try to convince myself as I open the door and walk into the most shocking scene of my entire life. My boyfriend of two years is bent over, his mouth firmly clasped on the d**k of a strange man who's wearing nothing but a t-shirt and sprawled out on the sofa in our living room. My bag drops to the floor with a loud thud, which alerts them to my presence, causing their eyes to drift in my direction. "f**k!" Dave exclaims, letting go of the veiny organ he was gladly gobbling down on and getting to his feet, pulling his pants from his ankles onto his waist. The man, however, gets up slowly, like I'm being a bother, and struts inside, like he owns the place. To our room! "You could have called, you know?" Dave asks after he's all dressed up, and we're alone in the living room. I stare at him in shock. "Really? Is that all you're going to say?" I barked at him, inching closer to him. "What do you want me to say? You've already caught me red-handed. Isn't that what you always wanted?" "I can't believe this," I shake my head, blinking repeatedly to stop the tears that had already formed in my eyes from coming down my face. The late-night calls that I didn't think were of any consequence since I heard a man's voice on the other end whenever he put the call on speaker all make sense now. The tired persona he put on whenever I tried to touch him or initiate s*x moved to the forefront of my memory. I couldn't believe it, but yet, I also felt stupid for ignoring what I should have realised were warning signs. Dave and I met through a mutual friend during the orientation for freshmen in college. He was the sweet, dimply boy who seemed too shy to say anything to a girl. I'd taken the lead and gotten his number. After a phone call, we were both mesmerized by each other. It was like I had unlocked the extrovert part of Dave. And how could I have even known he was attracted to males? s*x with him was always a bomb. During the times before I started having to literally beg for it, of course. "Listen. Leave Jake out of this. I'm gonna ask him to come out and leave. Don't act crazy, Crystal. Please. Once he's out, we can talk," he tells me, rubbing his chin like the conversation we're about to have is about us splitting the rent. Speaking of rent, I suddenly remember that I pay the rent for this house, and a sudden rage fills me completely. "You've got some nerve, Dave," I charge forward, taking a quick swipe at his face. My hand makes contact with his cheek hard enough that I feel a sting when it's off it. When I stare back at him, he's holding the hit cheek with his hand and looking at me like I've gone mad. "You bring your...your...lover...into my house..." "I live here too, Crystal," he retorts. "And now, you no longer do! I want you and your irritating lover out of my house! Out of my life now!" "Crystal, I told you. Let's talk when Jake leaves." "Oh, he's leaving. You both are!" And with that, I make my way into the room. Thankfully, Jake is dressed and looking at me like he's scared. He must have heard our exchange in the living room and knows I'm not as meek as I look. "Hey, let's not throw hands, okay? I'm gonna leave," he says immediately, his chest heaving up and down. "How long have you and Dave been...at this?" "Honestly, it hasn't been very long. It's not been up to a year," he replies, his voice shaky. "So it's been more than six months?" Jake shrugs repeatedly like he can't recall. "I'm gonna give you to the count of three. If you're not out by then, I won't be responsible for what happens to you next," I tell him, glaring at him. "Thank you," he says gratefully. "One...two..." I stand by the door with my hands folded across my arms. Before I get to three, he's already zoomed past me, as he makes his way out of the room in a flash. I return to the living room to see Dave looking at me angrily. "Crystal, we need to talk." "I'm not talking to you, Dave! There's nothing to talk about for goodness' sake!" I exclaim. "I cannot believe you would do this to me. I want you and your cheating, lying ass out of my house now!" "Your house?" he snorts. "Yes." "I contribute to the rent for this dump too." He did not just call our cozy one bedroom off-campus apartment a dump. "Well, my name is on the lease. And I have the right to decide who I want to stay with." "Crystal..." It appears I'm talking too much, and knowing Dave, sooner or later, I'll be buying into the lies he wants to feed me if he's here a minute longer. And so, I march back into the room and grab his boxes from the closet. He comes in as I'm tossing his belongings into the open boxes. "I wanted to tell you," he begins to say, watching me fling his things. "You wanted to tell me you're gay as opposed to me actually finding out? Good call." "I never wanted us to break up with a fight, Crystal. We're grown adults. We can do this amicably." I shrug the hand he places on my shoulder away. "I don't want to ever see your face again, Dave." He follows behind me as I roll his box out to the curb, flinging it so it lands in the middle of the road. "Okay, now that was just mean. Are you trying to make a scene?" he asks, his tone raised. A couple of other people who live in the building are coming out of their houses with some looking out the window. "No need to crush on him, ladies. He's gay!" I announce. Dave gasps in shock. "I'm not out of the closet yet." "Well, I'm bringing you out," I reply sarcastically. "Your vampire gay ass is now out in the sunshine. Get your s**t off my curb." I've noticed a couple of people getting their phones out to start recording the drama. I'm not interested in seeing my face on the campus' gossip blog tonight, so I return back inside my house, ignoring his call, and slam the door shut so hard that I know I'm going to get a complaint from my neighbour next door before the day is over. I had always imagined Dave and I would be together until we finished college. Even when he started acting all weird a few months ago, I chalked it down to him being stressed about things in school. I had warded off female friends from him who I felt was a threat to our relationship. I feel so stupid now that I've realized the main threats weren't even females. Alone in my own apartment, I figure it's safe to take off my brave face. And so, I sink into the sofa, bury my head and let the tears fall like waterworks.
