Chapter Two: Curious. Mara Antonette Cruz POV I keep on browsing on the internet while having a cup of coffee. It's early in the morning and I can't help but wonder what happened to that man. He was the main topic of the prosecution department. A lot of them saying that he was the most competitive lawyer in the past years. No one can beat him because he was wise and competitive. Aside from that, he was confident and is handsome. I’m new in this industry that’s why I know nothing. I understand that it was bad to gossip but I can’t help it. It’s killing my curiosity. While scrolling down on my phone, my finger suddenly stopped when I saw what I am looking for. I don’t know how to react. . . I suddenly felt guilty for gossiping to other people’s life. I’m shocked at what I have read. I can’t believe it! “Lawyer Vander Davids’ wife and daughter were found dead after a car accident.” After I’ve read the first sentence, I scrolled down and saw all of the articles. I felt my heart tightening as I continue reading and seeing the photos. It happened four years ago but I know that he’s still striving for what happened to his family. Now I know why he was like that. I felt sorry for him. If it wasn't for what happened, maybe he was still the Vander Davids that they all know. I suddenly wonder if he ever smiles or if he has ever smile after what happened to him? Because I guess he wouldn’t be able to smile after that. And that’s what I’m seeing to him. He wasn’t smiling. It’s as if he was alive but his soul was already dead. After I have finished my breakfast which is a cup of coffee and a loaf bread, I finally stormed out at my house. It’s still 7:30 a.m but I have to be there before 8:00 am. The prosecution department where I was working was just 15 minutes away from my house. It was walking distance and very convenient for me. My lips pouted as I entered the office. As always, I am earlier than them. I was confident when I enter our office. But then, just when I sat down on my swivel chair, Vander opened the door with a cup of coffee on his hand. He was handsome with his messy hair paired with his glasses on his eyes. His black coat wasn’t that clean but I don’t know why he looked good on that. Without noticing me, or maybe he noticed me but he didn’t just look at me. He didn’t even greet me! He just walked straight to his table. “Good morning Prosecutor Davids!” I greeted him instead. He looked at me with the same blank eyes and then sat down to his swivel chair. “Morning,” he answered. I pouted my lips again. It’s okay, at least he greeted me back! Later on, our workmates come. There were Jojo and Mitchell in our team too. We used to have Sarah but just last month, she resigned because she was now pregnant with her first baby! I missed her so much because there’s no other woman in our office. They bullied me a lot of times. “Mara,” Mitchell called me. I turned my head to him, he handed me the paper folder he was holding. “Give it to Mr. Davids,” he said. My forehead wrinkled at what he just said. “Why? You can just give it to him,” I replied. “He was so intimidating, I can’t even look into his face.” I rolled my eyes and took the paper folder to him. Gosh, why does it seem like he was afraid of Mr. Davids? I stood up and stepped into Mr. Davids’ table. I knocked on his table because I see that he was busy reading the papers he was holding. He looked up at me clueless. “Prosecutor Lee wants to give it to you. It was a big case that we will handle. We have to study this,” I said. From what I expected, he just nodded and took the paper folder, he said thanks and returned his attention to what he was currently doing. Gosh! I just went back to my own table. Mitchell and Jojo were both silently laughing at me. I just glared at them and rolled my eyes. I knew it, they know what will happen! They were so evil to me, how could they do this! I am the only girl here! They should protect me from that kind of guy! As a week passed, I thought that Mr. Davids will change. I thought he was just shy because it was only his days here. But then, he didn’t change even a bit. We can only feel his lonely presence. “What the hell? If I were him, I could just date another woman! I mean, he was handsome and every woman he just bumped could fall on their knees!” Jojo said. We are eating at the restaurant. It’s our lunch break and decided to go outside the department because the food at the cafeteria sucks. “Yeah, he doesn’t have an obligation now. He should celebrate,” Mitchell agreed on him. I hit both their shoulders. How could they think about those things?! “You are both such a shame!” I exclaimed at them. If they were in the same situation, I know that they were both will be like Mr. Davids. They don’t know how it feels. After having lunch, they decided to go back to the office. While I excuse myself and go to the nearest coffee shop to buy some coffee even if it’s hot in the Philippines. “Two coffee americano please,” I ordered to the lady bartender.
