Champaign problems and a proposal

~MAVIE~♧ The Champaign lid popped with a satisfying sound followed by more birthday cheers. I gracefully received a glass with an utterance of thanks as I took a sip. Everything was perfect. My boyfriend and my best friend had surprised me with a beautiful party for my 22nd birthday and I was forever grateful. What I couldn't get off my mind, though, was the sudden appearance of The 'Rhysand Moore'. I had heard only a few times Luci mention Rhys, I knew they had an older brother but I'd never seen him and nobody talked about him much. My eyes gazed in the direction they'd disappeared in about 15 minutes ago, him, Luc, and their parents. There were so many things I didn't understand, so many questions I had, but I didn't even know how to begin to ask them. How did I? Did I approach him and say, "hey, I've been fantasizing about you f*****g me senseless for 3 years now but it's my first time seeing you?" That thought alone made me feel crazy. But I felt things. I feel things. Now more than ever, when I finally saw him. It's like I'm reliving the memory but ever since he came in 2 days ago, a gun shot wound to his torso that nearly hit a vital organ, drenched and looking all hot, he'd been avoiding me or my gaze. Or maybe he just doesn't know me,is all. Sighing, I needed another drink. I stopped a waitress passing by and grabbed myself another glass of champagne, but Luci beat me to it. Where did she come from? "Nah, uhh! Come on, there's something you need to see," she pulled my hand in the direction of the house at the back. "Luci! What?" "Shhhhh! Birthday, girl. It's a surprise." I rolled my eyes. I think I'd had enough surprises to last me a decade by now. Yet, I chose not to fight it. The room was pristine, covered in wealth and white. On the bed sat a white sleeveless chiffon dress that looked more like a wedding gown and I could have sworn those were real diamonds on it. I gave her a suspicious look. She knew this was too glam for me. "Hey! Lucas chose it," she said, throwing her hands in the air. "I just helped him choose the cutest one." "Mhh hmm." The material between my fingers, it was the best quality there is. "Want to tell me the occasion?" I sideeyed her, catching her off guard, yapping like a fish. "Birthday gift." She shrugged. "Hmm," Ididn't believe her. I had this feeling in my gut that I was yet to be more surprised. By the time we made it back to the party, Mr and Mrs Moreno were coming out of the house, followed by my boyfriend. A smile pulled at my lips, he looked so fine and so mine. I bagged that. I bit my lip as his gaze found mine and he mirrored my smile. His hands found my waist before his lips found mine. Cheers erupted from around, I had to bury my face in his chest. This felt good. With him, it felt good. "You look scrumptious in that dress, babe. Can't wait to take it off," he whispered in my ear, heat flushed my cheeks. Movement behind him caught my eye. My bubble deflated. There he stood, the man of my dreams. Wait! What? The man I dreamt about. Not the man of my dreams. God! Mavie. "You okay?" Luc pulled back to cup my cheeks. Was I being suspicious? "What? Yeah, I'm just happy, you make me happy." Now I was manipulative too? Mavie! My treacherous eyes trailed back to the man rocking the Armani suit, a Champaign glass in one hand and storm eyes in mine, i had to look away before his gaze burnt me. "Dance with me," Luc took my hand and led us to the carpet overlooking the beautiful sea. Violins played a beautiful melody, the sound of crushing waves a paid actor, a relaxing melody, I laid my head on his chest as we moved to the rhythm. This was perfect. As we neared the end of the song, he spun me around and the moment I turned back around, Lucas Moreno was on one knee, and a massive rock staring at me, mocking me, sat on his hand. My jaws touched the ground, my heart stopped, time slowed to a stand still. "Ms Mavie Silva," his lips moved in the promise of reciting sweet words of forever, but they weren't registering to me. For that moment, I had detached from reality, like my soul was watching the scene unfold from a distance. My heart felt like it was beating in my hands, they trembled slightly. Luc was proposing to me. Of course he'd propose. We'd been together since the first year of college.I was about to graduate. We were about to start our lives together. Of course he'd propose. But. But why was I scared? Why was my brain not saying an instant yes? Why was I not jumping for joy like I should when the love of my life for 3 years goes on one knee for me with a massive rock in my face? "Mavie!?" Luciane's voice stunned me back to reality. Luc, still on one knee smiled brighter than that diamond, his eyes sparkling with unshed tears. I felt nauseous. And suffocated, suddenly that dress was 3 times smaller. "Say yes! Say yes!" People cheered in the background and my eyes did the one thing they shouldn't have done. Looked in his direction, drowning down the last bit of liquor in his glass before slamming it on the table then walking away. I winced slightly. Luc caressed my right hand, my gaze falling back on his. "My knees are killing me here, lovely girl, " a teary laugh erupted from my lips as I fell to my knees in front of him. This was an easy answer. I had no reason to overthink it. I lost my parents to a car crash when I was 10, left alone in this foreign land, far away from Brazil and with no living relatives besides my uncle. I'd do anything to stay away from that man. And Luc was offering me that sanctuary. I'd be a fool to not take it. Sniffling away my tears, I nod my head over and over and over again, "YES!" I yelled it for the world to hear. A sigh of relief escaped his lips that found mine in the next moment. A mixture of salt and love. Perfect. I loved this man. Cheers of jubilation filled the air, blending in so well with the sound of violin and the crushing waves as he slipped the huge rock on my finger. It was a perfect fit. I flaunted my hand in the air for the world to see. I was getting married! *~* The rest of the party went by with people coming around to congratulate us and bless us and not once did my fiancée leave my hand. Fiancée, huh? That felt so unreal. For the rest of the afternoon through to the evening, Rhysand was nowhere to be found. Even when we went to the restaurant for dinner, he was the last to arrive. Drinks arrived before the food and everybody dug in. The food was too good, everything about the restaurant was stunning. Luc kissed my head before raising his glass in the air. "I'd like to raise a toast, first to my twin sister, Luci, for introducing me to my wonderful fiancée and soon to be wife right here." Luci raised hers, a proud smile on her lips. Her boyfriend since first year, Rocky, kissed her head. "And to my wife," his eyes turned to me, all eyes at the table turned to me, they made me self conscious. "Thank you for making me the happiest man in the world, cheers." He kissed me. "Cheers." People drank to that. "I'd also like to raise a toast to my dear friend," Luc gave her a suspicious look, like they could read each other's minds. "Luciane!" He warned, she ignored him. "I'd like to thank you for changing that skirt chaser into a family man, Mavie, you did the impossible." "LUCI!" The whole table erupted into fits of laughter. She wasn't lying, though. When I met Luc, he was labeled the 'man w***e' of the year who never had a girlfriend for more than a week. In fact when he met me, to him I was like all the other girls he'd met before. He thought like all of them, if he threw money my way I'd fold and bend for him but jokes on him, he ended up being the one who did the bending. And- A memory struck my mind but it was hazy. One picture was Luc. One was me, shocked and crying. The next was me drenched and barefooted, mascara running down my face. Then blank. The next one has my eyes flying to Rhysand. His eyes are already on me, sitting across the table, those eyes have me pinned to the spot. The next memory was him taking a glass of vodka from my hand. Another blank. The last one is his face between my thighs. I pressed my thighs shut at the memory. What the f**k! I heaved, my head spinning. I downed the last remaining bit of my drink before whispering my excuse to Luc. "Are you okay?" He felt for my temperature. "Yeah, I just need to use the bathroom." "Do you want me to come with you?" I giggled at his suggestion, wiping at his lips. "I'd rather we don't keep people waiting, it'd be rude," I whispered against his lips, he chuckled. I finally excused myself and walked as composed as I could so I don't look like I have something weird going on. A few beats of cold wet hands on my cheeks, I felt slightly better, I was breathing better. I released a deep breath. "Mavie, let's get our s**t together. Life is perfect, and there's no need to complicate it with non-existent things." I pointed an accusatory finger at my reflection in the mirror. There's a reason why I don't remember anything. And it should stay that way. Life looks better if it stays that way. Yes? Yes! I fixed my make up and finally decided to go back to join the family but stopped dead in my tracks when I found none other than Rhysand standing on the bathroom corridor, a cigarette in his mouth. His eyes found mine. Fuck!
