This wasn’t how Calvin had imagined the night would go. He had been so thrilled on his way to this place, so excited to arrive that he even took the less traveled back roads to be just a few minutes quicker. It was supposed to be a surprise for Sam, the fact that he got there earlier than expected. Perhaps it could even have impressed him how skillfully Calvin had navigated streets that were alien to him. Instead, he had arrived just in time to eavesdrop on another conversation Sam was having with someone else. Calvin had spotted and recognized the back of Sam’s head as soon as he entered the bar’s front door. He also saw that he was speaking with one of the bartenders. The way those two were talking across the counter, one could easily mistake them for people who’d known each other
