The room was filled with employees, all buzzing with curiosity and concern. Rene, dressed in a sharp suit, stood confidently at the front, while Lila, looking elegant in a black dress, sat in the front row.
Mr. Blackwood Sr., Axel and Rene's father, stepped forward, his voice firm but emotional. "Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, Axel's passing has left a void in our company. After careful consideration, we have decided that Rene will take over as CEO, effective immediately."
The room erupts into a mixture of gasps, whispers, and applause. Lila's eyes widened in surprise, her gaze fixed on Rene. She knew he was going to be in charge but she didn't know he was just easily going to be given the position of her late husband
Rene's expression remained stoic, but his eyes flickered with a hint of something unreadable. "I'll do my best, he said with a neutral expression.
As the meeting adjourned, Lila approached Rene, her heels clicking on the floor. "Congratulations, Rene," she said, her voice polite but guarded.
Rene turned to her, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Lila. Thank you. I'm surprised to see you here."
"I couldn't stay away," Lila replied, her eyes locked on his. "Axel would have wanted me to support the company."
Rene nodded, "I appreciate that. And I'm glad to have you by my side as my assistant."
Lila raises an eyebrow. "Your assistant?"
Rene faintly smiled, one that was not noticeable by anyone, a hint of charm in his voice. "Yes, Lila. You know the company almost as well as Axel did. I need your expertise and insight to make this work." In reality Rene didn't need Lila's help or anyone's help, he just wanted to help her get her mind of things and it was so unlike him.
Lila hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Okay, Rene. I'll try, Lila said. Then, Lila extended her hand, and Rene shook it, his grip firm.Rene's gaze lingered on Lila's hand in his, and for a moment, his expression softened. He noticed the faint redness in her eyes, the subtle puffiness of her face, and the slight quiver of her lips. He remembered the funeral, how she broke down in tears, and his heart twitched. This woman didn't deserve any of this he thought.
"Lila," he said, his voice a shade gentler, "I know this can't be easy for you. Axel's passing... it's still fresh."Lila's eyes welled up, and she blinked rapidly, trying to hold back tears. Rene's grip on her hand tightened slightly, offering a subtle comfort."I'm here for you, Lila. Not just as your boss, but as... a friend." The word felt foreign on his lips, but he meant it.Lila's face crumpled, and she nodded, a sob escaping her lips. Rene's cold exterior cracked just a little more, and he pulled her into a gentle embrace.
For a moment, they stood there, Lila's tears soaking into Rene's suit, his arms wrapped around her in a soft, comforting hold. It was a small act of kindness, but it spoke volumes about the humanity beneath Rene's tough exterior.
As they pulled back, Lila's eyes met Rene's, and she quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ruin your suit, "it's fine, Rene said with a strict smile. Ms. Thompson led them to their offices, her heels clicking on the marble floor. "Right this way, Mr. Blackwood and Lila," she said with a professional smile.Rene released Lila's hand, his expression returning to its usual stoic mask. "Lead the way, Ms. Thompson," he said, his voice firm and detached.
Lila followed, her eyes fixed on Rene's back, her mind racing with thoughts and emotions. She could not believe Axel was gone, and Rene was now in charge. She was not sure what to make of this, but she knew she needed to be strong, for herself and for Axel's legacy.
As they approached the first door on the right, Ms. Thompson opened it and gestured for Rene to enter. "Your office, Mr. Blackwood," she said with a nod.
Rene stepped inside, his eyes scanning the room with a hint of approval, but it was not better than his, not at all. Lila followed, taking in the elegant decor and the stunning view of the city skyline.
"Your office is just next door, Lila," Ms. Thompson said, leading her to the adjacent room.
Lila entered, feeling a sense of comfort and familiarity. Her office was smaller than Rene's, but it was cozy and stylish, with a plush carpet and a large window overlooking the city.
As Ms. Thompson departed, Lila took a deep breath, trying to process everything that's happened. She knew she has a lot to learn, and she was not sure if she was ready to work so closely with Rene. But she was determined to make it work, for Axel's sake and for the company's success.
Rene's voice interrupted her thoughts, his tone firm and commanding. "Lila, can you come to my office for a moment? We need to discuss the company's current projects and strategies."
Lila nodded, as she made her way to Rene's office.
Rene gestured for Lila to take a seat in front of his desk, his eyes fixed on her with a hint of intensity. "Lila, I know this is a lot to take in, but I need your expertise and insight to make this company thrive. Axel was a good leader and I aim to continue his legacy."
Lila nodded her eyes locked on his. "I'm committed to helping you, Rene. What specific areas do you need my focus on?"
Rene leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled together. "Firstly, we need to assess our current projects and prioritize them. I want to know which ones are profitable, which ones need more resources, and which ones can be terminated. I also need your input on our marketing strategies and how to improve our public image."
Lila nodded, her mind racing with ideas and suggestions. "I've been thinking about that, and I believe we need to revamp our social media presence and engage more with our customers. We also need to explore new markets and diversify our products to stay competitive."
Rene's expression turned thoughtful, his eyes narrowing slightly. "I agree. I've been thinking along similar lines. Let's work to create a comprehensive plan and present it to the board within the next two weeks."
Lila nodded, feeling a sense of determination and purpose. "I'm on it, Rene. I'll work closely with the team to get it done."
Rene's gaze lingered on hers for a moment, his expression softening slightly. "I appreciate your dedication, Lila, I'll be away for some few days to sought some things out before returning back, Lila nodded with a smile as she made her way out.
Rene leaned back into the chair, he really had to settle somethings before taking over for now.
