Chapter 3: Whispers in the Arcane Architecture
The morning following the ball brought a swift return to reality. The air in Professor Cassius Mordren’s classroom smelled of copper and old parchment. Cassius, the forty-one-year-old Master of Ancient Blood Magic, paced the front of the amphitheater with charismatic predator-like steps. His eyes lingered on Seraphina a moment too long.
“Blood magic does not lie, students,” Cassius said, his voice smooth yet chilling. “It reveals lineages that crowns seek to bury.” He drew a silver athame across his palm, chanting softly, “Sanguis Revelare!” The droplets of blood suspended themselves in mid-air, forming the crest of the ancient Regnum Lirae—the fallen kingdom. Seraphina’s palms burned fiercely beneath her desk, the Cristallum Aquae churning in response to the forbidden magic.
After class, Seraphina sought refuge in the abandoned west cloister, trying to soothe the phantom burns on her hands. Tristan was there, surrounded by sketchbooks and scattered alchemical vials. His sharp, artistic features were smudged with charcoal.
“You’re radiating kinetic energy again, Princess,” Tristan said without looking up, using the playful moniker that sent a shiver down her spine. “I’ve been investigating the old foundations of the school. Did you know the ley lines beneath our feet are directly tied to the old royal bloodline of Regnum Lirae? Someone is drawing immense power from the deep vaults.” He held up a vial of iridescent blue fluid. “Found this near the restricted archives. A highly refined healing tonic, standard issue for the elite vanguard, yet modified with a highly personal signature.”
Seraphina stared at the vial, the web of secrets tightening around her as the dark architecture of Lux Tenebrae seemed to close in.
