PART II: THE CRIMSON CRUCIBLE

Chapter 4: Academic Warfare & The Exhaustion of Seraphina The annual House Internecine began the following week, transforming the academy into a relentless gauntlet of magical combat. Students were pitted against one another in simulated ruins erected in the central courtyard, where the freezing northern winds whipped through jagged stone arches and simulated battlefields. For Seraphina, who had to deliberately suppress her innate dual elemental powers and rely strictly on basic wand spells, the physical and mental toll was catastrophic. While other elite students channeled their full cores, she had to intricately construct artificial dampening fields within her own mind, forcing herself to appear average while an ocean of boiling water and white-hot fire fought to erupt from her palms. Professor Lucien Veritas took absolutely no pity on her. In fact, during the grueling combat assessments, his standard severity transformed into something fiercely demanding—an uncompromising, hyper-strict scrutiny that pushed her to the absolute brink of psychological and physical collapse. While other professors overlooked minor flaws in the students' casting arcs, Lucien focused on Seraphina with a cold, unrelenting hawk-like gaze, picking apart every micro-fault in her form in front of the entire class. “Your stance is completely unbalanced, Seraphina! Focus!” Professor Veritas barked, his deep voice cutting through the echoing cracks of dueling wands. He stood high on the raised stone dais, his dark robes billowing slightly, his face an impenetrable mask of absolute severity. “In a real conflict, a dark sorcerer will not wait for you to find your center. Your wand movements are sluggish! Incarcerous!” With a viciously fast, non-verbal flick of his arm, he threw a high-velocity binding hex straight toward her feet. Seraphina’s eyes widened as the dark, whipping tendrils of the hex ripped across the cobblestones. Panting heavily, her muscles screaming in protest, she twisted her wrist and deflected it barely in time, shouting, “Scutum Arcane!” The translucent blue shield materialized before her, but Lucien’s spell carried a crushing kinetic weight. The shield shimmered wildly and shattered under the immense pressure of his magic, sending a harsh backlash through her arm that left her fingers numb. “Again,” Lucien commanded without a single shred of warmth, his eyes boring into hers. He stepped down from the dais, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone as he closed the distance. “Your wrist is dropping three degrees on the defensive arc. If you cannot master basic somatic ward work, you have no business standing on this dueling floor. Pick up your wand and cast it precisely, or leave the classroom.” The sheer psychological weight of his public harshness stung worse than the physical fatigue, yet beneath his biting reprimands, she could see the hidden, frantic urgency in his dark eyes. He was deliberately hardening her, forcing her to cast flawlessly under extreme pressure because he knew Cassius was watching her from the shadows. He was building her defenses the only way he knew how—by becoming her most formidable adversary. By Friday, the relentless gauntlet had completely spent her. Her muscles ached with a deep, throbbing soreness, her mind was fractured by days of sleeplessness, and her palms were raw, blistered, and bleeding beneath the skin from containing the agonizing, boiling internal pressure of her restricted elements. She dragged herself down the dark, damp corridors toward her quarters, barely able to keep her eyes open. Shivering from the exhaustion, she leaned against the cold stone walls, feeling utterly isolated in her struggle, unaware that from the top of the astronomy tower, Lucien was watching her retreat, his own hand gripping the balcony railing so tightly his knuckles turned white.
